Saint Martin of Tours People Ministering to People Roman Catholic Church and School Our Mission Statement Saint Martin of Tours is a Roman Catholic Community bound together by the gift of faith in Jesus Christ, as we join Him in offering thanks and praise to God the Father through the abiding presence of the Holy Spirit. Molded by the Word of God and nourished by the Bread of Life and the Cup of Salvation, we are sent to seek out the lost, bind the broken, feed the hungry, and to share the Good News of God s Mercy and Love for all. We welcome all people of goodwill to join us in building here on Earth the coming Reign of God and so to offer to people of all ages continued formation in our Christian Faith. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time january 20, 2019 A Reflection WILL YOU STEP UP OR STEP OUT? Dear friends, The Gospel reading for the Second Sunday of Ordinary Time this year is the story of the wedding at Cana. A couple ran out of wine in the middle of their wedding banquet! Everyone wants their wedding to be the best day of their lives. I have worked with many couples who plan for a long time to make their wedding day perfect. I also have encountered few bridezillas and groomzillas who in this process make their life and the life of others around them miserable. However well one may plan, unforeseen circumstances can always challenge us. An expected death of a loved one, a power failure, a cake that fell apart, a ring bearer who forgot the ring in the car, and the list could go on. The wedding feast is also a metaphor for our own very lives. Something you started with great enthusiasm is faced with a challenge, what do you do? Will you step up or step out? When you see a family member, a friend, a neighbor, an elderly person, or a homeless is in need, what is your response? Will you step up to help or to step out? Mary encouraged Jesus to step up. That makes a miracle happen. If only we could step up in challenging situations, we would see miracles happen. Go and be the miracle workers! With love, Fr. Faith Formation Corner This is the last weekend in January and we are celebrating Catholic Schools Week. For this week s Faith Formation Corner we are going to reflect on the value of both education and formation in our faith. Education and Formation are very similar, but an important distinction is that Education is often associated with the head, while Formation is associated with the heart. As we begin, I invite you to reflect on the most important moments, the Aha! moments, of your journey of faith. Do you have many of these moments or just a few very important ones? Were they in the context of formal education, informal interaction with family or friends, and/or in the silence? Formal education remains a necessary component in growing and thriving in today s world, but we often need more than what is provided at school to grow in our faith. Formation is the process of helping us to more consistently listen to the voice within our hearts, the Holy Spirit. Where do we find Formation opportunities? Formation can happen both formally and informally, but it is most fruitful in the context of a consistent faith sharing group. This faith sharing group can be your family, close friends or new friends that gather for the purpose of growing in community and their faith. As January concludes, let us each reflect on what kind of Formation we desire this year. Let us also ask Jesus for the ability to listen to the depths of our hearts.
