St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Third Sunday Of Easter Ahhhh, the great season of Lent is over and we move on to the norms of life. After all, that is what Lent is all about, setting ourselves forward in the grace of God to rise above our weaknesses and failures to ever stronger roles in our vocations to Holy Orders, Marriage, and Single Life. And what better time, with the coming of Spring. Let us rejoice, be glad, and step forward in making a difference in the socio-political world that surrounds us. And sometimes, oppresses us. The parish Work Camp team thanks everyone who supported this Mulch Sale fundraiser.if you missed the sale, and are still interested, please check the Parish Office for more information. This weekend after all Masses, the Work Camp volunteers will be handing out Easter eggs to parishioners. Please take an egg and bring it back next week filled with your donations. This will also help with work camp funding. This year we hope to send at least a dozen of our youth to the Diocesan Work Camp in June. Did anyone happen to notice the new statue of St. John the Evangelist now positioned outside the front door of the church? The original statue was returned to the foundry in China because there were cracks in the metal. Take a good look it looks like Fr. Moretti!! Ha! Ha! Anyway, a dedication ceremony, and celebration, is slated for Sunday May 1 st, after the 12:30 Mass. Many thanks go out to Mr. Roy Francis in watching over this project. He was terrific. Again, come one come all. Mrs. Sherin Murphy, Director of the Religious Education program in the parish recently mentioned an upcoming end of the year thank you party for all the CCD teachers and assistants. It is slated to take place in Mercy Hall on Saturday April 30 th after the 5:00pm Mass. God bless the teachers and assistants (close to a hundred) who offer so much of their hearts and souls for their students and have volunteered many hours of their time. Frs. Moretti, Rivera, and myself, can well testify how much we as teachers learn from the kids. I told the kids in class just last night that someone would do well to set a retirement community next to any one of our local high schools where an old man, like myself, could just ride a golf cart up to watch the games or school plays and concerts. CCD is a wonderful medium in which to develop the ability to know, love, and serve the Lord. God bless all the folks who, as credible witnesses to the Faith, make it happen. Let us pray for one another. This past week I was away in Alabama for the funeral of Mother Angelica, foundress of EWTN, The Eternal Word Television Network. She was a real character much like her contemporary counterparts, Fr. Benedict Groshel (Order of the Franciscan Renewal), Fr. Paul Marx (Human Life International), Mother Therese of Calcutta (Missionaries of Charity). As with the others there were always plenty of stories to go around. When Mother Angelica thought of initiating a religious order with the apostolate to the media, she approached many bishops but only the Bishop of Birmingham responded given her a home to start. In the fledgling community she accepted her mother as one of her sisters. And she was a tough one, that mother of Mother. She lasted 19 years before going off to meet the Lord. It gave a whole new meaning to, Happy Death, for the surviving sisters if you know what I mean. And when they first located the monastery in Irondale, Alabama, some of the locals used to shoot at them. Mother never ducked and never ran. She assumed those rednecks would actually hit her if they wanted to. A great compliment to her work was found on the billboards of some of the Protestant Churches near the Temple, where the monastery is located. One said, God bless Mother Angelica, She was a blessing to all of us. Miracles can happen. I very much enjoyed gathering with my old friends at EWTN. They were very kind to this foolish priest covering the Bishops Conferences years ago. Fr. Joseph Mary and his eight confrers with the Missionaries of the Eternal Word, Michael Warsaw, Doug Keck, Raymond Arroyo, Fr. Mich Pacwa SJ; Msgr. Charles Connors, Fr. John Trugilio, Fr. Stew Swetland, Fr. Bjorn Lundberg, Mr. Scott Hahn, Dr. John Hass, Mr. Marcus Grodi., and the many other workers from in front and behind the cameras. Fr. Benedict Groshel could not join us as he will see Mother on the other side. There were seven bishops, including the apostolic nuncio in attendance. Some of whom, like the priests in attendance asked of rumors for the next bishop of Arlington. In each case, I looked right and then left, and quietly leaned into them whispering that their names had been prominently mentioned. Ha! Ha! Ha! What a marvelous collection of God s Faithful were present at the funeral last week. God bless mother, the character, iconic religious, evangelizing a world of fragile peace and broken promises, in need of a seam. Well done for the moment, if only just beginning. Let us prayer for her and all her good Franciscan Sisters. Collegiate Answer: There is a social statement in Rembrandt s Prodigal Son that is anthropologically inaccurate. One hand of the father is that of a man and the other is that of a woman. Collegiate Question: On the lighter side. What Catholic girl s high school introduced bobby socks to the world and what was the venue in which they appeared? Hint, go find any religious from Philadelphia to find the answer. Good hunting. Fr. Gould 4

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 10 April 2016 The end of the third quarter marking period is rapidly approaching for the SJES students, so, hopefully, a little bit of school work is being "considered" over the Easter break. Last chance this next week to pick up "Spring Spectacular" SJES PTO fundraiser, dinner and raffle tickets. The event is April 8 from 6:30 to 10:30, and tickets can be purchased at the elementary school office. The elementary school is excited to hear about the new Pre-school building project being planned. I understand ground will be broken in 2017 for this exciting parish project. My hope is that the elementary school grows so large that new construction may be needed-we will continue marketing the school and praying. Both schools on campus are shaking off the detritus from winter with spring landscaping from our maintenance crew and volunteers. We thank them for their efforts. The elementary school is trying to pull together a Civil War daytime encampment for April 29. It supports our Civil War studies in 4th grade and the Middle School. As some of you know, this conflict is a favorite source of interest for myself and Social Studies teacher, Ryan Stohlman. Last spring, we had the Virginia Mobile ConfederateHistory Museum visit our school. More details to follow. Have a good week and God bless you! Principal Fairweather We are having a Used Book Sale to benefit St. John School Library on May 21 & 22. This will be outside on the lawn across from the church. Please put all of the books you plan to donate into small boxes and bring them to the school after 3:30pm. A school family has offered to store the books until the used book sale, but requests that the books be put into small boxes to maximize the storage space. Our Used Book Sale will ROCK with your help! Thank You! (The Knights of Columbus are donating all of their profits from their Spaghetti Dinner April 16 after the 5pm Mass, to the school Library). Thank you to all the families who have registered for St. John Preschool for the 2016-2017 school year! Please contact the Preschool office for registration and tour information: 540-347-5341. Limited spaces remains available. Further details can be found at the St. John website www.stjohntheevangelistschool.org. RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults: Please contact the Religious Ed Office at 347-2922 x209 if you are interested in becoming Catholic or if you are an adult who needs to be confirmed. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Preparation sessions are held on Wednsday evenings in the St. John School s Art Room from 7 to 8pm, from September through the weeks after Easter. 2 more weeks to go! We will continue our Bible Timeline Study with James: Pearls for Wise Living, an eleven week study. We meet in Mercy Hall from 7pm to 9pm each week. This study is for anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian Life, as "James" offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances. Don't worry about being unable to to attend our session metings each week, as the registration process will allow you to watch the videos online at your convenience. To sign up for this study please go to the Parish website to register on line with Ascenscion Press. In case of inclement weather, we will follow the Fauquier County after school cancellations. C o n f i r m a t i o n 2 0 1 6 Confirmation candidates: Don t forget that all 25 Service Hours need to be completed by May 2016, Everyone should have completed about 20 hours so far as we have only a month left. If not, please contact the RE Office asap! Please turn in all completed Confirmation paperwork as soon as you have completed it so we may update your files. Interviews will be schedulded through the summer and completed bfore the end of August. All volunteer service hours are to be done with the understanding that one is to serve the Church, each other, and the parish community with seriousness, respect, love, and charity. Cell phones are to be used only for emergencies and to call parents for rides when the service is completed. May God help us all to grow in love for one another. Reminder for the Candidates: Don't forget to update the RED binder in the vestibule of the church when you complete your Spiritual exercises. 5

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 10 April 2016 Are You Interested in Learning more about the Bible? Come join fellow St. John's parishioners in deeper companionship with Christ through lectio divina, "where the Word of God is so read and meditated that it becomes prayer" (Catechism, 1177). St. John the Evangelist launched the Bible Study series offered by Ascension Press in 2012. These studies are being offered again; but this time with a twist. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution. YOUNG @ May 6 th is our next meetin. Our emergency financial aid can provide temporary help by contributing to the rent, utility bills or other pressing need. In many cases, however, those we serve would greatly benefit from guidance on how to set a budget, manage income and spending, or eliminate debt. We are asking a volunteer(s) willing to provide this kind of personal financial counseling on an occasional, case-by-case basis. If you or anyone you know could handle this task, please contact Jim Gannon at 540-522-4449. One need not be a professional CPA or financial counselor, but should possess good people skills and have experience in managing a family budget and personal finances with a common-sense approach. God bless you for your continued support. 540-270-6774 http://stjohntheevangelistsvdp.blogspot.com Follow us @ SVDPStJohns Mornings of Mercy for Divorced Catholics Join for a series of morning retreats that deal with topics such as grief, parenting, suffering and hope. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death. AVAILABLE NOW!
