St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin Dear Folks, Fifth Sunday of Lent God bless one and all in the closing weeks Lent. The penitential season is one that may pain some but benefits all. It helps us to get our house in order in how we need to live and ultimately how we need to be treated. Did I say need, rather than want? Yes little Virginia Lent helps us to open our eyes to see the value of our needs and less on the rantings for our wants. Our needs are pretty simple: safety, security, sanctity, and salvation. No one really cares what you wear to church or what you drive to get there. It is all about showing up. Please allow the Lord to enter, and be an active part of your life and He will help you in your needs. Fr. Moretti has submitted a little comment for the bulletin. He is our patron for the internet and never hesitates to promote some good and faithful testimonials to affect our spiritual life in this penitential season. "TheDaCapo Foundation of Vienna, Virginia has been promoting Catholic devotions for 20 years. The following websites are worth checking out - If you like to access them from your phone: Dial-A-Saint 703-938-5177; Thoughts of Saints 703-938-5196. Something fun to do in the car with the kids:) www.worldlifeday.com; www.thisisthemass.com; www.saintsinheaven.com; www.maryqueenofallsaints.com; commandmentsandlife.com; www.divinemasterplanforlife.com Congratulations goes out to our parish Youth Director, Mrs. Allison Hagert. On Sunday she showed up for Mass with newborn, Landon. God bless Allison and Joshua Hagert and may they soon reclaim many happy, holy, and quiet nights of sleep. Let us all pray for one another. Speaking of praying for one another, has anyone noticed we are still in the throes of flu season. Or maybe it should be bronchitis season. Whatever you call it it is bad. The other morning at the 6:30 Mass I mentioned all the coughing sounded like a TB ward. Poor poor people. Let us be careful out there. Please watch for the Holy Week Schedule in the coming bulletins. Until then please run, do not walk, to the parish confessionals each night of the week. The closing days of Lent are always a mad house for the long lines to the Box. Please come now rather than wait to the last minute. And speaking of the last minute. You know how the place gets packed for the big Feast days by the folks who stopped going to church years ago but come back on Easter to see if the priests have changed Ha! Ha Ha! All that said, please come extra early to get a seat on Easter. Let no one complain but offer an example of mercy in our welcome to one and all. It will be good to have them home and we pray they come back the following week. Typical Shanty Irish I leave a thought of praying for the children of those who stopped going to church on Sunday. Many of them pay big tuition bills for our grammar school or CCD program so their kids can know their Faith. Unfortunately knowledge needs the compliment of love in order to serve the Lord. And love needs to be expressed both socially and sacramentally. Catechism 101; In all things let the Lord be praised, honored, defended, and promoted by all of our families as we approach Holy Week. Collegiate Answer: Marcus Julius Philippus, 204-249, was the first Christian Roman Emperor. He also designed the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, in Jerusalem. Collegiate Question: Who were the two popes who were also physicians? Fr. Gould 4

St. John the Evangelist Weekly Bulletin 13 March 2016 Greetings! We are still looking for volunteers for Junior Achievement speakers at the Elementary School. If you are interested, please e-mail Jennifer Timko at jentimko@gmail.com. Last week parish, school and Diocesan officials attended a security presentation by SSI Guardian Avanced Security Solutions Company. It involved a quick action inside door lock to protect students and teachers from intruders. Our campus received high praise from the president of the company, Michael Simler (a former DC Capitol policeman and U.S. Government security consultant), for the security hardware and emergency plans now in place around the parish campus. Last Tuesday, our 8th graders and their parents and teacher attended a Vocations Mass, celebrated by Bishop Loverde at Holy Spirit Church. We are hopeful this Mass, celebrated by the Bishop, will inspire our students to consider the Holy Orders. PLEASE SLOW DOWN WHEN DRIVING THROUGH THE PARKING LOTS-we have near misses almost daily with adults late to Mass, or school or some other reason. Help us avoid a tragedy-please slow down! Have a great week and God bless you all! Principal Fairweather We are having a Used Book Sale to benefit St. John School Library on May 21 & 22. This will be outside on the lawn across from the church. Please put all of the books you plan to donate into small boxes and bring them to the school after 3:30pm. A school family has offered to store the books until the used book sale, but requests that the books be put into small boxes to maximize the storage space. Our Used Book Sale will ROCK with your help! Thank You! (The Knights of Columbus are donating all of their profits from their Spaghetti Dinner to the school Library). Thank you to all of the families who joined us for our Open House. Registration is now under way for St. John Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten programs. Space is limited. Please contact the Preschool Office for registration information and to schedule a tour at 540-347-5341. Info about the Preschool can also be found on our website at www.stjohntheevangelistschool.org. Rite of Christian Initiation (RCIA) Please join us as we continue to discuss Sacraments and Prayer. All those interested in learning about the Catholic Faith are encouraged to join us each Wednesday, starting at 7:00 PM in the Art Room in St. John s School. For more information, please call the Parish Office at 347-2922 Every year during the magnificent Easter Vigil liturgy, St. John the Evangelist and parishes throughout the world welcome adults into full communion with Christ and his Church. Through a process of discernment, prayer, education, and sharing with others on the journey, these adults prepare to become Catholics and the entire SJE parish community rejoices with them. Please pray for St. John's RCIA candidates who will come into full communion with Christ and His church this Easter Vigil. We will continue our Bible Timeline Study with James: Pearls for Wise Living, an eleven week study. We meet in Mercy Hall from 7pm to 9pm each week. This study is for anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian Life, as "James" offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances. Don't worry about being unable to to attend our session metings each week, as the registration process will allow you to watch the videos online at your convenience. To sign up for this study please go to the Parish website to register on line with Ascenscion Press. In case of inclement weather, we will follow the Fauquier County after school cancellations. Save The Date St. John the Evangelist Catholic School will be holding their annual Spring Spectacular Fundraiser on April 8 th at Fauquier Springs Country Club in Warrenton. Come join us for a relaxing Evening of food, fun, auctions, prizes and of course to help support the wonderful students of St. John s. If you are a business owner, big or small, or are in close relation to one, we are in need of donations for auctions. Your services, products or business would be greatly appreciated. Your business will be advertised in the spring spectacular program and on our two websites in recognition for your generosity. Please contact Jennifer Caballero for more information; Jencaba77@gmail.com 5

Come join fellow St. John's parishioners in deeper companionship with Christ through lectio divina, "where the Word of God is so read and meditated that it becomes prayer" (Catechism, 1177). St. John the Evangelist launched the Bible Study series offered by Ascension Press in 2012. These studies are being offered again; but this time with a twist. Parishioners, family and friends, and even new friends can sign up to watch the videos online and get together for discussions at any time and place they wish. The bible studies to be made available are listed below. Whenyou visit the parish website and click on the Adult Bible Study picture it will take you to a page with available studies. Then click on the title of a bible study and you will find the link to sign up for the Bible studies that St. John's is making available. Once you log in and purchase the study materials, you will be able to watch the videos at your convenience. Please look for future studies in upcoming bulletins and on the parish website. These Studies were designed to form a solid foundation for an ongoing parish Bible Study program. We hope to add other studies in the future. If you have any questions, please call the Religious Ed office at 540-347-2922 x209. The first Study, started in October, was The Bible Timeline: The Story of Salvation. The 24 lessons in The Bible Timeline guide the student of Scripture through the reading of the biblical narrative. In 2013, Matthew: The King and his Kingdom, another 24-part study, was the follow-up to the Scripture narrative in The Bible Timeline. The gospel of Matthew explores the life and mission of Jesus. Following Matthew was Acts: The Spread of the Kingdom **in 2014. This study shows how the Church continued the work of Christ after the coming of the Holy Spirit. ** Available here soon In the early summer of 2015 we offered Mary: A Biblical Walk with the Blessed Mother in one day. This study is an extraordinary pilgrimage that reveals Mary's unique role in God's Kingdom and in our lives. In the fall of 2015 Revelation: The Kingdom Yet to Come an 11 part study showed us how the kingdom established by Christ in his Church is intimately connected with the kingdom of heaven. In this study you will discover what the mysterious figures and images of Revelation mean. You will see how Revelation is more than an apocalyptic vision of the "end times." It is a revelation of God as our Divine Bridegroom and the Church as his spotless Bride, forever united in a heavenly, holy, and mystical marriage that we enter into every time we celebrate the Mass. In 2016 the Bible Study group covered James: Pearls for Wise Living described as a book of wisdom. James is a compilation of teachings intended to help the fledgling church in the face of persecution.
