January 27, 2019 3rd Sunday In Ordinary Time Third Sunday in Ordinary Time I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Matthew 6:33 Dear Parish Family, There are times in our lives when we would rather not face particular challenges and difficulties that come our way. Whether they are problems in our family, financial issues, or whatever, we d prefer to sweep them under the rug. Sadly, there are some issues where this simply cannot be done. They cannot be ignored. Nor is it good to run away from them. Certainly, the scandal of sexual abuse in our family of the Church is such an issue. Many of us hurt deeply from this. Many of us don t want to have to deal with it. Many of us just want to run away from it. But, as followers of Christ, we cannot. We must not. Exposing all that has occurred is vital to the healing that is so desperately needed. I dare say it will be a very long time for this healing to occur fully, but we must take the steps necessary to allow it to occur. One step that Bishop Vásquez and all of the other bishops of Texas believe is necessary is to take place this coming Thursday. On January 31 the Diocese of Austin will publish the names of clerics who were credibly accused of committing sexual abuse against minors. Bishop Vásquez has informed us that the publication of the list is a sad and difficult task, but that he finds it is necessary and just, even though it may cause concern and pain in our parish communities. We have been informed that Bishop Vásquez will publish the list as part of a direct communication from him to the faithful of this diocese. The Church s strength relies on its willingness to recognize and correct its failings. The list will be posted in the afternoon on January 31 on the diocesan website at austindiocese.org. In anticipation of this publication, we must pray for the victims and their families, as well as the good priests, deacons and religious brothers and sisters who did not commit these cruelties but now bear the burden of past sins, all of whom need our loving support. Any questions about the list should be addressed to the Diocese at (512) 949-2400. If you have suffered sexual abuse, please report the abuse to law enforcement authorities. If the sexual abuse occurred by a minister in the church, please contact the Office of Ethics and Integrity in Ministry after reporting it to law enforcement. In our Gospel for this Sunday, Jesus identifies himself as the one anointed by the Spirit to bring glad tidings to the poor; to proclaim liberty to captives; recovery of sight to the blind; to let the oppressed go free; and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. As he says, Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. Jesus announces that, in him, the realization of God s Kingdom of compassion, mercy, and justice is fulfilled. Let us pray for a deeper awareness and experience of this love of God for all of us, the Body of Christ, during this most painful time in the life of the Church. ****************************************************************** This Saturday, February 2, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, when, in faithful observance of the Law of Moses, Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in the Temple to consecrate him to the Lord. It also is called Candlemas Day. According to Luke s Gospel, Simeon recognized Jesus as the Messiah and declared him a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and glory for your people Israel (Luke 2:32). With this came the tradition of blessing the candles that will be used in the Church s liturgical worship throughout the year. If you would like to have any of your own candles blessed for use in your home, you are welcome to bring them to the 8:30 a.m. Mass. Next Sunday, February 3, 3 is the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time. However, when this date does not fall on a Sunday, it is the Memorial of St. Blaise, and the traditional day for the blessing of throats. A general blessing of throats will take place at the end of each of the Sunday Masses. God bless you, always, and in all ways. Father Ed
Austin, Texas -1389 Shirley@svdpparish.org Gratefully Giving: We are a Stewardship Parish Go, eat rich foods and drink sweet drinks, and allot portions to those who had nothing prepared (Nehemiah 8:10) Ezra s instructions to the people show us that God does not forbid us from enjoying the good things in life. He wants us to be happy! However, God expects us to be grateful for all that He has given us and to generously share our blessings with those who are in need without expecting anything in return. The members of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul wish to thank our parishioners for their generosity during the first quarter of this fiscal year (October, November and December). We posted 81 assists helping 236 people, spent 278 hours visiting with those in need and traveled 1220 miles. We spent $18,870 paying rents and $5,801 for utilities. We also assisted with car repairs and HEB gas cards to help our neighbors in need get to their jobs. The Vincentians of our parish ask that you pray for those who are suffering financial crisis and for those who are visiting them. Please prayerfully consider joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. Meetings are every 2 nd Wednesday of the month at 7pm in P2. HUNGER AWARENESS MINISTRY ISTRY The Hunger Awareness Ministry would like to extend heartfelt thanks for all of the food donations our generous parishioners make each week. Our growing community means continually increasing needs for food donations. In addition to the 1 pound bags of dried pinto beans and rice normally collected for the Vincentian Family Center other needed items for the food pantry are non-perishables, like Canned vegetables, Canned fruit, Canned soup, Top Ramen, Peanut Butter, Macaroni n cheese, Canned meat and tuna, Pasta and Cereal. Thank you for your support. Egg Cartons are also needed! For any questions please contact Hunger Awareness Ministry Lead, Laura Ashley-Wilson, 512-619 619-0143 RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION ITIATION FOR ADULTS Have you been thinking about becoming a Roman Catholic? Perhaps you have been attending Mass with your family or friends and just never got around to it. Maybe you aren t quite sure if you are ready to take this step and want to know more about the Catholic faith before making a commitment. You might have been raised as a Catholic but never had all of your Sacraments of Initiation Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation. Then you may be ready for the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA). If you have children over the age of 7 who have not received their sacraments, we have an RCIA process adapted for children, too! Anyone interested in learning about the Catholic faith or inquiring about initiation in the Church is invited to call the Parish Office at 255-1389. CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING CORNER The Catholic Church has much to offer the world: core beliefs and teachings; the love of Christ celebrated in the sacraments; the experience of the Holy Spirit in community. Because of this we have the confidence to work and pray for Christian unity. In what ways do you share the treasure of our faith with others?
