Claudia Hooper - In thanksgiving to Saints Elizabeth and Philomena THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to discipleship. Today s Gospel passage provides us with one last example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one example of what it doesn t mean. A destitute widow shows us that discipleship means following Jesus way of service, even if it requires giving one s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to extend God s care to those who are most in need. In our reading from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:28). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY S READINGS First Reading The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick Please contact the Rectory Office if you know of any homebound person or anyone going for medical procedures who would like to be anointed by a priest and/or receive the Eucharist. #718-859-9009 GIFTS AND INTENTIONS: BREAD AND WINE: Rev. The Bishops of the United States has formed a committee to focus and address the sin of racism. Here in the Diocese of Brooklyn, Bishop DiMarzio has formed a Commission on Racism and Social Justice. The goal of this commission is to deal with the social and religious problems that racism in all of its forms presents to us. The commission will like to hear from all of the faithful of the Diocese of Brooklyn. To that end we will be hosting an open listening session for all the faithful of the diocese to attend. This session is meant to be an opportunity for us to share how racism has impacted our parishes and the church as a whole. This session will be held on Saturday, November 17, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at St. Mark Roman Catholic Church located at 2609 East 19 th Street, Brooklyn NY 11235. All are invited.
