Well here we are, on our third weekend of the new Mass schedules and working together as the Catholic Community of South Pittsburgh. So far things seem to be going well. I have to admit that I was a little rattled when we started out with thirteen funerals our first week together but that seems to be changing. I am so grateful for having Fr. Levi and Fr. Bob along with our five deacons working together as a great ministry team. This weekend we also start our new combined parish bulletin. Cindy Depretis is our new bulletin editor and has been doing a great job with the conversion and layout. I really hope you enjoy the bulletin as it will contain information that is relevant to all of us as a community. In addition, you will also find information for some of the activities and meeting for each parish. I designed the cover to contain pictures of all of our churches, sanctuary candles for our homebound to see as well as our guests who read the bulletin online. This new bulletin will have all of the pertinent information you may want to know about our parishes including the weekend offertory for each as well as weekly information about our new combined Youth Ministry program led by Karyn Reinhart and Anthony Bradley. Almost everything contained in the new bulletin will be open to all parishioners across the grouping. As we continue to grow together, my hope is to use the bulletin as a means of communication and encouragement to entice you to become more involved in the life of our parish community. Please remember that the bulletin does not cost the parish anything and is made possible because of the generosity of our many local merchants and businesses who purchase advertisement space on the back pages. Be sure to read, check out the ads and patronize and support our local businesses. One of the immediate improvements I started for our new parish grouping is a combined and centralized phone system that will serve the entire three parish grouping. The new system is almost completed and will be fully up and running when the system at St. Sylvester s is completed. This new system will make communication between parish offices and staff much easier and more efficient as they will now be able to reach each other by just dialing extensions. They will also be able to transfer calls to each other as well as the clergy. You can call any of the parish phone numbers and will be directed to the same voice message system for all of us. No matter what number you call, if you choose one of the clergy, you will only have to leave one message and we will get it no matter what location we are at and we will only have to check one message center. The new system will also enable the staff to work together to help each other when needed. You will also be able to find the entire recorded Mass schedule for the grouping. We are Moving Forward! Henry Ford once said; If everyone is moving forward together, then success takes care of itself. This is so true for our parishes as we continue to move forward together to build a strong catholic church presence in our area of Pittsburgh, Baldwin, Brentwood and Hays. Thank you! For your encouragement, enthusiasm, patience and prayers. I know change is sometimes scary but without it life can become even more scarier when we allow fear to keep us stuck in a past that will never come back preventing us from growing or progressing. Together we can keep moving forward through change if we Let Go and Let God. When You Let Go, You Create Room for Something Better Fr. Steve Celebrations of Life s Journey Together we welcome Timothy Allen Eugene Mitchell, Jr. Who was baptized into our Faith & Family. Congratulations to the Parents & Godparents! Our sympathy is extended to the families of: Marlene Nix, Edward Nowe, Deborah Palmieri, Joseph Spano, Jr and Louis Struzinski. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. Baptism preparation training seminars will be held the 2nd Tuesday of each month. If you have not taken the seminar contact Deacon Mike at 412-884-7744 ext. 206 to register. The Pre -Baptism seminars are held in the St. Albert Chapel at 6:30 p.m. Both Mom and Dad should attend and sponsors are welcome. To schedule a Baptism contact Deacon Mike. Congratulations and God Bless! Please remember members of our parishes who are in nursing homes, the homebound, the sick and their caregivers in your prayers. May God s mercy shine on them.

Readings for the week of November 11, 2018 First Reading The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). Psalm Praise the Lord, my soul! (Psalm 146). Second Reading Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). Gospel This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). R.C.I.A The Rite of Christian Initiation Have you considered becoming a member of the Catholic faith? Or maybe you know someone who has expressed an interest in becoming Catholic, a disciple of Christ? It is near the time we typically begin R.C.I.A to prepare those interested to receive the Sacraments at Easter Vigil (April 20, 2019). If you feel drawn to the church and would like to attend, contact Deacon Mike at 412-884-7744 X 206, or by way of email at mbabcock@holyapostlesparish.org. Men s Retreat at St. Paul s Monastery November 9 11, 2018 Need a break from daily life and you would like to strengthen your bond with Christ? All men of the parish are invited on a weekend trip to St. Paul s Monastery on the South Side to explore and reflect. Why a retreat to St. Paul s Monastery? Because you deserve a weekend getaway with God. This retreat will renew your spirit and strengthen your relationship with God. You will learn more about your Catholic Faith. You will meet new people from other parishes or if you prefer you can take time to be by yourself. It will give you the opportunity to unwind from the busyness of life. Who doesn t want and need that? For information, please contact Deacon Dan at: 412-461-6906, Ext. 110, dcndan@holyangelshays.org. THE DEACON S CORNER The Nicene Creed; A statement of belief. When we pray the Nicene Creed during the Mass Do you really know what you re saying? The Nicene Creed was born out of the Council of Nicea in 325 AD. It has series of belief statements that form our belief in the Catholic Church. Over the next several weeks we will look at these statements and see how they relate to us and our belief in God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit and the universal Church. Catholic Church. DEACON TIM S BOOK & MOVIE REVIEW.. It is the duty of all Catholics to know Catholic history. An easy way to do this is to follow the Liturgical calendar. It is easy to do this now with apps for your phone that show the Saint of the Day, and explain the significance of this Saint. Another way to learn Catholic history is to read a good book on an event in the life of our Church. This subject of this week's review is the book Lepanto, by GK Chesterton, With Explanatory Notes and Commentary, Edited by Dale Ahlquist. Lepanto is one of the most famous poems of the 20th century. In addition to being a beautiful and inspiring poem, it is also a famous piece of literature that gives an excellent overview on life in 16th Century Europe, complete with its worst villains and greatest heroes. Some of these real life heroes that this poem will introduce are Pope Pius V, Don John of Austria, and Miguel de Cervantes. Cervantes was wounded in this battle and 50 years later would write Don Quixote. Another interesting thing about the poem Lepanto, is that it was written in 1911, and while the poem is fiercely Catholic, it would not be until 11 years later when Chesterton would covert to Catholicism. This particular book about the poem includes explanatory notes and commentary by Dale Ahlquist, president of the American Chesterton Society. The poem Lepanto is not all that long, but each and every line is packed with nuggets of information on history, places and theology. Lepanto is also very easy to read and when you read it a second time, you will probably find yourself reading it as a dramatic presentation, which will only increase your love of this poem. I proudly give this book Five Beards out of Five Beards because it presents both the poem Lepanto, but also all of the background information to help the reader better understand the places, characters involved in Lepanto, but also the importance of all of them in Catholic history. ~Live Jesus in our hearts.forever!
