TO TEACH WHO CHRIST IS Many thanks to the hundreds of parishioners who have already made a gift or pledge to the To Teach Who Christ Is campaign. I have written Bishop Francis Kane, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Chicago, and asked for a clarification about how St. Mary's contributions toward an education endowment fund at our sharing parish, Most Blessed Trinity in Waukegan, will be credited toward our parish goal. Of the sixty parishes that have participated in the campaign so far, St. Mary is the only one that has made a major gift in support of a school belonging to a different parish. Once I hear from Bishop Kane, I will share more about our total contributed to Catholic education and faith formation. COME, HOLY SPIRIT On Saturday, March 1, we welcome Bishop George Rassas to our parish for the Sacrament of Confirmation. Please join me this week in praying that the Father and the Son send down the Holy Spirit into the minds, hearts and souls of the young people being confirmed. An adolescent growing up today urgently needs the help of the Holy Spirit. May the Holy Spirit give these teens enough light so they can take good steps that lead them closer to Jesus. ASH WEDNESDAY The Season of Lent begins on March 5 with the observance of Ash Wednesday. Mass with the distribution of ashes will be celebrated in our church at 6:30am, 8:00am, Noon, 5:15pm and 7:00pm. Please read more about Lent, including the regulations on fasting and abstinence, in this bulletin. A DAY OF GRACE As Lent begins, we recognize our need to confess our sins and be forgiven. Turning back to God includes taking stock of our sins, being contrite for them and asking God for mercy. On Friday, March 7, there will be priests available in church for confession beginning at 8:30am until Midnight. Booklets that will help you prepare for the Sacrament of Penance are at the doors of the church. Please consider this an invitation to meet the Lord Jesus in a powerful way through this Sacrament. PARISH FISH FRY Our parish fish fry will take place early in Lent this year: Friday, March 7. Doors open at 5:30pm. Enjoy a good fish dinner with your fellow parishioners. Ticket prices are: $14.00 for adults and $6.00 for children. Beverages are extra. Please plan to join us. STOP TRAFFIC Each month it seems more and more people are growing aware of the prevalence of human trafficking. Even in our own country, people are brought into the U.S. as forced laborers, with no rights and being held against their will. Liz Yore, a parishioner and attorney, participated last November in the Human Trafficking Conference organized in Rome by the Holy See. Liz will share with us about the plight of human beings forced into slave labor in our world today. Join us on Saturday, March 8 at 9:00am in the Parish Center Conference Room. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern94@gmail.com Pastor s Notes

Lent 2014 Lenten Regulations Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all the Fridays of Lent. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. Those who are bound by this may take only one full meal. Two smaller meals are permitted if necessary to maintain strength according to one s needs, but eating solid foods between meals is not permitted. The special Paschal fast and abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. The Season of Lent is a preparation for the celebration of Easter. The liturgy prepares the catechumens for the celebration of the Paschal Mystery by the several stages of Christian initiation; it also prepares the faithful who recall their baptism and do penance in preparation for Easter. (General Norms for the Liturgical Year, #27) By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer, the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe penitential days totally or a substantial number of such days must be considered serious. (On) weekdays of Lent, we strongly recommend participation in daily Mass and self-imposed observances of fasting. In light of grave human needs which weigh on the Christian conscience in all seasons, we urge particularly during Lent generosity to local, national and world programs of sharing of all things needed to translate our duty to penance into a means of implementing the right of the poor to their part of our abundance. (U.S. Bishops statement on penitential observances, 1966) Ash Wednesday Schedule Lent begins on March 5 with the observance of Ash Wednesday. Mass with the distribution of ashes will be celebrated in our church at: 6:30am, 8:00am, Noon, 5:15 and 7:00pm. Lake Forest College Students Ministries and Lenten Mass on Campus All Lake Forest College Students are welcome to join us for special events on campus! Religious Education Program Second Graders had a special family candlelight service in early February. They received a special blessed candle from Father Mike McGovern and Father Matthew Kowalski. The candlelight service reminds the children that Jesus is the light of the world, whom they will soon receive in Holy Communion. Jesus calls us to let our light shine, so that others will see the good that we do, being lights like Christ to all we meet. Please keep the First Communicants and their parents in your prayers as the children prepare to receive our Lord for the first time this Easter Season.
