COME, HOLY SPIRIT We welcome Bishop George Rassas to St. Mary on Sunday June 8 for the Sacrament of Confirmation at the Noon Mass. Twenty-one young people from our parish were unable to receive the Sacrament on March 1 with their peers, so Bishop Rassas graciously agreed to return this Sunday and confirm a second group. Please note the Noon Mass will require more time due to Confirmation. ON A MISSION Please pray for the 25 high school students from our parish who depart on June 8 for a mission trip to Tennessee. Led by our Youth Ministers, Alli Harvey and Diane Kennedy, the teens will assist the impoverished residents by building a home for them. Please say a prayer for our youth and the people they serve. SUPPORT RETIRED PRIESTS This weekend there will be a second collection that benefits the retired priests of the Archdiocese of Chicago. Most priests officially retire at the age of 70, yet continue to serve in parishes. The increased costs of medicine, assisted living and health care is a concern. Your generous support will help the PRMAA (Priest Retirement and Mutual Aid Association) provide quality care for our retired priests. Thank you. THE SCHOOL YEAR CONTINUES Please be aware that the parish school has extended the academic year with two additional days on June 9 & 10. There will also be a Religious Education Intensive session taking place on June 11-13. If you are driving on the campus that week, please be careful as the children will be here. PRAY FOR PEACE Israeli President Shimon Peres and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas accepted an invitation from Pope Francis to join him at the Vatican on Sunday, June 8 for a joint prayer meeting for peace. At the end of a Mass in Bethlehem last month during his trip to the Middle East, Pope Francis issued the invitation. The Holy Father later told reporters on the plane returning to Rome, "Courage is needed to do this and I am praying to the Lord very much so that these two leaders, these two governments, have the courage to move forward. This is the only path for peace." Please pray for God's blessing on Pope Francis and the prayer meeting with President Peres and President Abbas. CLEANING AND RESTORATION As mentioned previously, we would like to clean and repair the façade of our church this summer. The first round of work will begin on Monday, June 9 through June 11. I ask that people coming into church on those weekdays please follow directions and use the south and east doors. I am grateful for your patience as we undertake this project. Thank you. In our Lord, Father Mike McGovern mmcgovern94@gmail.com Pastor s Notes

ARCHDIOCESE OF CHICAGO Office of the Archbishop Post Office Box 1979 Chicago, Illinois 60690 Dear Friends in Christ, June 2014 This weekend, June 7-8, 2014, we are taking up a special collection for the Retired Priests of the Archdiocese. During 2013, we mourned the death of thirty of our retired priests the most who have died in a single year. At their funerals, I listened to accolades for their ministerial service the children they baptized, the homilies they preached, the Masses they celebrated, the hospitals and nursing homes they visited, the children they taught in our schools and religious-education programs, the weddings they witnessed and the families they comforted at countless funerals. Time and again, I heard stories of the selflessness with which our retired priests helped many parishes avoid reducing Mass schedules and other services. Our retired priests still number 193, and they rely upon your help now. The Priests' Retirement and Mutual Aid Association (PRMAA) cares for our retired priests. As you know so well, the costs for health care, prescription drugs and nursing-home care continues to increase. Also, the priests' pension fund remains seriously impacted by the economic downturn. This special collection will help us continue to support our retired priests. This special collection in June is different from the December collection for retired men and women religious where the collection goes to those in religious orders; Archdiocesan priests do not receive any funds from that collection. I want to take this opportunity to thank all of our retired priests for their lives of service and devotion. I also remember in prayer all of our retired priests who have died. I am thankful to all of you for your immense generosity in this collection last year. I ask you to repeat your kindness this year. Your donations, your prayers and your good wishes are an affirmation of our retired priests. Please pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood. You and those you love are in my prayers; please keep me in yours. Sincerely yours in Christ, Francis Cardinal George, O.M.I. Archbishop of Chicago

Dear St. Mary s Parishioners, As I come to the end of my assignment at St. Mary s, I would like to thank all of you for making me feel so welcome here. These three years have passed by so quickly. I feel like I am just getting to know most of you, and the time has come for goodbye. Many of you have expressed appreciation for my time as your associate pastor. I truly have felt supported and appreciated in my time here! This was my first full-time assignment at such a large parish, so I have gained a great deal of pastoral experience, which should serve me well in the future. I would like to especially thank Fr. Mike, Fr. Brendan, and all the parish staff for your help in ministering to the Church in Lake Forest. St. Mary s is fortunate to have so many dedicated and faithful parishioners, who go beyond their obligations. You are giving a good example of how to live your faith! I was blessed to celebrate my 25th anniversary of ordination here in 2012. Thank you to all who helped make that such a special occasion. I will treasure the memories of the good friends I have made here. As I move on to another parish, I hope to occasionally return to St. Mary s and see some of you again. Please continue to support me with your prayers, this is the most important help you can give to all our priests! Fr. Matthew Kowalski A Farewell from Fr. Today, twenty-five juniors and seniors along with five adult chaperones, left for the Robbins, TN to spend a week serving alongside workers at Habitat for Humanity Appalachia! We will spend eight hours each day working on houses for community members, then enjoy our evenings with bonfires, authentic southern cooking, and trips to the swimming hole. Please keep our entire trip in your prayers this week!! The Prayer of Generosity Lord, teach me to be generous. Teach me to serve you as you deserve; To give and not to count the cost, To fight and not to heed the wounds, To toil and not to seek for rest, To labor and not to ask for reward, Except for knowing that I do your will. Amen. --St. Ignatius of Loyola As we work and encounter Christ this week in TN, we will be talking about what it means to live a life of Christian service. Jesus gave us the perfect example, calling us to wash each other s feet. The Prayer of Generosity is one of my personal favorite prayers because it helps me reflect on what true service and generosity are how it s not always self-gratifying. I will be encouraging the teens to pray this prayer throughout the week as they come across difficult situations of service. We ll work on offering our service up as part of our prayer throughout the week to give God greater glory. --Alli Harvey Alli Harvey :: Youth Minister :: (847) 234-7337 :: AHarvey@ChurchofStMary.org us on or visit our website at www.churchofstmary.org
