2 The Most Holy Trinity June 15, 2014 A Word From the Pastor... What a Parish Should Be Good At Dear People St. Bede, My Easter Season resolution was to read the Apostolic Exhortation, "Evangelii Gaudium" (The Joy of the Gospel) by Pope Francis. So, today I would like to share and summarize just four of his core ideas on what a parish should strive to be good at, namely acknowledging the importance of the parish, the call for effective preaching, the expansion of the role of the laity, and not forgetting the poor. The parish is the flexible presence of the Church in a given place. It is a training ground for evangelizers assuming different contours depending on the openness and missionary creativity of the pastor and the community (providing) an environment for hearing God s Word, for growth in Christian life, for dialogue, proclamation, charitable outreach, wonder, and celebration. Pope Francis acknowledges high expectations, not always attained, for the homily in spreading the Good News. His corrective suggestions: The preacher must know the heart of the community. The homily is not entertainment, should be brief, clear, orderly, and positive. (The preacher) needs to be able to link the message of the biblical text to a human situation, to an experience which cries out for the light of God s Word. The lay person spreads the Joy of the Gospel. Regarding women: I readily acknowledge that many women share pastoral responsibilities with priests, helping to guide people, families, and groups and offering new contributions to theological reflection. But we need to create still broader opportunities for more incisive female presence in the Church. Not surprisingly, the Pope wants a church which is poor and for the poor. They have much to teach us they know the suffering of Christ We are called to find Christ in them, to lend our voice to their causes, but also to be their friends, to listen to them. The Joy of the Gospel offers a powerful road map for us to know what we need to be good at. In the love of Christ, Fr. Rodolfo G. Ramirez THE MINISTRY OF GIFT BEARER Did you know that you can participate in a ministry with no preparation, no meetings, and no schedules? It s easy! At every liturgy we need individuals/families to be part of the ritual action of presenting the gifts of bread and wine for the preparation of the Eucharistic table. These folks represent the Assembly gathered in the pews at Mass. There are no special skills or training required. Simply sign your name on the sheet in the gathering space before Mass and find one of the ushers. He/she will then make sure to come and get you during the Offertory and will accompany you to the Presider as you carry the gifts of bread and wine. And, this is a beautiful way to celebrate the anniversary of a loved one s passing, a birthday, special anniversary or simply to celebrate life! All are welcome in this most beautiful ministry!

St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 2a From our Lector Ministry... Dear Friends, The main purpose of the Lector Ministry is to proclaim the Word of God in the 1st and 2nd Scripture readings of the Mass. This is an awesome opportunity that every lector takes seriously once they accept their calling to officially become a lector. Our Vicariate considers this ministry so important that they require each lector to attend training every 3 years. The goals of our Lector Ministry are: To understand the purpose and message of the Bible readings To proclaim effectively the Word of the Lord to His people so that they hear His voice and not yours To bring God s presence, through the Word, to His people To live and read God s Word regularly There are no regular meetings to attend and usually you will not be scheduled more than once a month as long as there are sufficient lectors for each Mass. Your personal time commitment is to effectively prepare for your assigned reading. What you can gain is a better understanding of God s Word, a stronger prayer life, and a more personal relationship with God. It is an amazing feeling when you ask the Holy Spirit to be with you and feel His flame in your heart giving you the strength to proclaim God s Word. The only way to accomplish this is through the right mindset and preparation. Each of you have heard great speakers and may have wished you could speak like that. If you have felt the call to become a lector, please talk to any lector after any Mass or call the rectory to find out when and where lector training is scheduled. The peace of the Lord be with you. St. Bede Church Ingleside, IL 7 Meet one another doing good. Pope Francis Dear People St. Bede, I have extended an invitation to Rev. Greg Schmitt CSsR to come to our parish on the weekend of June 28-29, 2014. Father Schmitt will speak to you about the work being done by Unbound (previously known as CFCA), and how this provides a trustworthy way to actively participate in the social outreach of the Catholic Church and answer the Gospel call to serve the poor. Founded by lay Catholics, Unbound is an organization that has served more than 600,000 children, youth and elderly in 21 developing countries since 1981 empowering them to make more choices in their lives, live with dignity and reach their potential. Unbound s unique sponsorship program is highly personalized. It matches a child, youth or aging person at a project overseas with a sponsor in the U.S. who cares about and encourages them. For about a dollar a day, a sponsor helps to provide much-needed nourishing food, medical and dental care, the chance for a child to go to school, livelihood programs for families and much more. All of these efforts are directed at affirming the dignity of every person in their local community. Please join me in welcoming Father Schmitt to our parish. In the love of Christ, Fr. Rodolfo G. Ramirez

10 The Most Holy Trinity June 15, 2014 St. Bede Women s Club What a wonderful meeting we had to end the year for the Women s Club. We joined together to celebrate Mass with Father Rodolfo. He then installed the new officers, Kathy Pederson as Vice-president and Debbie Linn as secretary. It was followed by a Phone call to God on Krystyna Zeve s special phone. A delicious dinner of lasagna was prepared and served by Donny Schmit. Donny is the Mayor of Fox Lake and a long-time active parishioner here at St. Bede. Magician Steve amazed us with card tricks and had Father Rodolfo and the ladies participating in experiments of reality or illusion. Steve Danko has been creating illusions for over 15 years and is an active parishioner at St. Bede. A vote was taken and passed on a revised set of by-laws that will bring out a more spiritual and social club. Our next Women s Club meeting will be September 8 th. SAVE THE DATE: OCTOBER 4, 2014 Plans are being made for a full-day bus trip to the shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in New Franken, Wisconsin.
