SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ JULY 23, 2017 FROM THE DESK OF DEACON GEORGE Deacon George Montalvo, Director of Religious Education at Saint Joseph, Is our guest columnist this week. For the next two weeks, this space will feature an original essay by one of our priests or deacon. Msgr. Hubba s column, From the Pastor s Desk, will return on August 13. I recently read two articles about faith formation and the importance that family has in their children s faith journey. One was from Michael Cardonella, a Catholic writer, and the other is from John Roberto, a wellknown author on youth and family faith formation. There are many important aspects that they touch on in their articles that I believe are worth keeping in mind. 1. The need for parents to grow in their own faith Parents need to grow in their own faith in order for their families to develop their faith. Faith has always been cultivated in the family primarily by parents. Children learn from their parents by example in the way they believe and in how they practice their faith. Parents in most instances fulfill their obligation, acquired at the baptism of their children, to educate their children in the Catholic faith and to keep the light of Christ, their faith in Christ, alive in their lives. Parents do this by attending Sunday Mass, reading Catholic books, articles, etc. and especially by talking about faith at home with their children. By the time children are enrolled in any catechetical program they should already be familiar with major faith themes. Religious Education Programs are most effective as a reinforcement or a continuation of what is lived in the midst of family life. 2. The benefits of having a faith-practicing family John Roberto has compiled a good number of surveys and studies on the subject of the importance of parenting and faith. He indicates that in a survey conducted by David Dollahite and Jennifer Thatcher it was found that the following benefits of a family s religious involvement directly impact child/youth behaviors: a. Religious practices are linked with family satisfaction, closer father-child relationships, and closer parent-child relationships. b. Divorce rates are lower and marital satisfaction and quality scores highest among religiously involved couples. c. There is less domestic violence among more religious couples, and religious parents are less likely to abuse or yell at their children. d. Religious involvement promotes involved and responsible fathering and is associated with more involved mothering. e. Greater religiosity in parents and youth is associated with a variety of protective factors for adolescents, making it less likely that they will engage in high-risk behaviors. The sociologist, Robert Wuthnow, Director of the Center for the Study of Religion at Princeton University, has conducted research that confirms the importance of family religiosity. People who were sent to Sunday school as children will attend religious services more often as adults than those who were not sent. Yet it is religious training in the home that appears to matter most: family devotions as a child is the best predictor of adult attendance, followed by seeing one s parents read the Bible at home, and after that, by parents having read the Bible to the child. Author James Davidson and his colleagues have conducted research on Catholic generations every six years since 1987. They identified the following influences of childhood religiosity: 1. Childhood religiosity affects closeness to God. The more people learn to be religious as children, the more likely they are to report experiences of the holy later in life. In other words, the way young people are raised has long-term effects on their ability to experience God in their adult years. The more children participate in religious activities and develop a sense that religion is an important part of their lives, the more they are likely to have close personal relationships with God later in life. 2. Childhood religiosity also fosters commitment to the Church. Catholics who learn to be religious when they are young find it relatively easy to claim their Catholic identity. They also come to appreciate the benefits of being Catholic. Childhood religiosity promotes Catholic identity and investment in the Church, which also make significant contributions to faith and morals. Early childhood religiosity does not guarantee faithfulness later on, but it certainly improves the odds. The two most important influences on childhood religiosity are having parents who talk about religion and having religious educators and catechists who are effective in ministry. Young people learn how to be religious when their parents talk with them about religion and when they receive guidance from instructors who know how to nurture religiosity. Deacon George Montalvo 3

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ FEAST DAY: JULY 26 BECOME AN EXTRAORDINARY MINISTER OF HOLY COMMUNION Good parents of the Blessed Virgin Mary, grandparents of our Savior, Jesus Christ, When life seems barren, help us to trust in God s mercy. When we are confused, help us to find the way to God. When we are lost in the desert, lead us to those whom God has called us to love. When our marriage seems lifeless, show us the eternal youth of the Lord. When we are selfish, teach us to cling only to that which lasts. When we are afraid, help us to trust in God. When we are ashamed, remind us that we are God s children. When we sin, lead us to do God s will. Do you feel called to help distribute the Body and Blood of Christ at Mass?... to bring the Sacrament of the Eucharist to the homebound and the sick?
