SAINT PAUL CHURCH Cranston, Rhode Island
PASTOR S CORNER Dear Parishioners, I am embarrassed. Last weekend we had a wonderful missionary priest of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary share with us his experience and ask for our generosity to help build a school in India. This man has given most of his priestly life to spreading the Gospel in India, in particular to people suffering from Hansen s disease (leprosy). At his Mass, he offered the final blessing in Hindi (with my permission) to express to us that the one Gospel is shared in so many languages all over the world. I was absolutely shocked that some individual approached Father after Mass and told him that here, we only speak English because this is America. I couldn t have been more embarrassed and I apologized for the rest of the afternoon. It is important that we are patriots, but nationalist attitudes have no place in our country, never mind the church! The moment you enter the doors of a Catholic Church, nationality, race, culture, sex, are left at the door (cf. Galatians 3:28). There is no official liturgical language other than Latin (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium 36), whereas the Gospel is to be preached to ALL PEOPLES (Matthew 28:19, Acts 2). In conjunction with this topic, I have been asked about what we can do about the current situation at the border detention centers. This highlights the escalating issues that are symptomatic of a broken system that has existed for a very long time. Along the border there are CRS homes and refuges as well as missionary orders (like the Sacred Hearts Priest from last weekend). Our rice bowls and collections support their work. We can help in a hands-on way here in our own diocese. See information elsewhere in this bulletin. In Christ, Fr. Young
