Our vision A spiritually alive world. Our mission Reimagining church with courage, joy and wonder. Evensong Thursday, January 17, 2019 5:15 p.m.

Evensong Eve of the Confession of St. Peter Thursday 17 January 2019 5:15 pm Welcome to Grace Cathedral. Choral Evensong marks the end of the working day and prepares for the approaching night. The roots of this service come out of ancient monastic traditions of Christian prayer. Thomas Cranmer, Archbishop of Canterbury in the 16th century, created this form as part of the simplification of services within the newly-reformed Church of England. The Episcopal Church, as part of the worldwide Anglican Communion, has inherited this pattern of evening prayer. In this service we are invited to reflect on the business of the past day, to pray for the world and for ourselves, and to commend all into God s hands as words of Holy Scripture are said and sung. The beauty of the music is offered to help us set our lives in the light of eternity; the same light which dwelt among us in Jesus, and which now illuminates us by the Spirit. May this service be a blessing to you. Voluntary Cantique Jean Langlais Opening Sentence Preces Officiant The people stand as the procession enters. The Invitatory and Psalter O Lord, open thou our lips. And our mouth shall shew forth thy praise. O God, make speed to save us. O Lord, make haste to help us. Kenneth Leighton Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end. A men. Praise ye the Lord. The Lord s name be praised. Hymn 254 Sung by all. Wyngate Canon text: William Walsham How (1823-1897); music: Richard Wayne Dirksen (1921-2003) 1

Psalm 23 Sung by the choir, the people sit. Jeffrey Smith (BCP, p. 612) The Readings John 21:15-19 The Magnificat The people stand. John Harper Washington Service Matthew 16:13-19 My soul doth magnify the Lord, and my spirit hath rejoiced in God my Saviour. For he hath regarded the lowliness of his handmaiden. For behold, from henceforth all generations shall call me blessed. For he that is mighty hath magnified me, and holy is his Name. And his mercy is on them that fear him throughout all generations. He hath showed strength with his arm; he hath scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts. He hath put down the mighty from their seat, and hath exalted the humble and meek. He hath filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he hath sent empty away. He remembering his mercy hath holpen his servant Israel, as he promised to our forefathers, Abraham and his seed for ever. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. Luke 1: 45 55 The people sit. The Nunc Dimittis The people stand. Harper Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word; For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, which thou hast prepared before the face of all people, To be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of thy people Israel. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost: as it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end. Amen. 2 Luke 2: 29 32 Homily The people sit. The Rev. Melanie Mullen The Episcopal Church s Director of Reconciliation, Justice & Creation Care The Apostles Creed All Sung by all on a monotone, standing. I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth; And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Officiant The Lord be with you. And with thy spirit. The Prayers Leighton The Lord s Prayer The Suffrages The Collects Presider Officiant Let us pray. The people may kneel. Lord have mercy upon us. Christ have mercy upon us. Lord have mercy upon us. Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen. O Lord, show thy mercy upon us. And grant us thy salvation. O Lord, save this land. And mercifully hear us when we call upon thee. Endue thy ministers with righteousness. And make thy chosen people joyful. O Lord, save thy people. And bless thine inheritance. Give peace in our time, O Lord. Because there is none other that fighteth for us, but only thou, O God. O God, make clean our hearts within us. And take not thy Holy Spirit from us. Sung by officiant. Leighton Leighton Anthem Sung in Latin. Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestrina You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.. Matthew 16:18-19 Closing Prayers The people may kneel. The Rev. Kenneth W. Parris Assisting Clergy 3

The Readings John 21:15-19 When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon son of John, do you love me more than these? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my lambs. A second time he said to him, Simon son of John, do you love me? He said to him, Yes, Lord; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Tend my sheep. He said to him the third time, Simon son of John, do you love me? Peter felt hurt because he said to him the third time, Do you love me? And he said to him, Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you. Jesus said to him, Feed my sheep. Very truly, I tell you, when you were younger, you used to fasten your own belt and to go wherever you wished. But when you grow old, you will stretch out your hands, and someone else will fasten a belt around you and take you where you do not wish to go. (He said this to indicate the kind of death by which he would glorify God.) After this he said to him, Follow me. Matthew 16:13-19 Now when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, Who do people say that the Son of Man is? And they said, Some say John the Baptist, but others Elijah, and still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, But who do you say that I am? Simon Peter answered, You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it. I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
