Josef Vollmer König Dear Brother Knights, We begin our Advent journey, a journey toward Christmas. In our church s celebrations, we celebrate the Past. The Advent time in the past is the time before the birth of Christ. The Jewish people were waiting for the promised Messiah to free them from slavery and oppression at different times in their history. They believed God would be true to His promise. They were waiting for an earthly savior. God s promise was fulfilled in Jesus, therefore the title given Him, Christ, which means Savior. In the gospel of St. Luke 2: 21 40, we read about Simeon and Anna who had been waiting their whole life for the Messiah. Mary and Joseph presented the infant Jesus as prescribed by the Law and Simeon and Anna were present. Both recognized the infant Jesus as the Messiah and praised God. We celebrate the Present. We celebrate Christ s coming now in our time in our lives. He comes to us in Sacred Scriptures; He is the Word that became flesh. He is present to us in the Eucharist; His own words to us are This is my Body. We encounter Christ in our neighbor: He tells us whatsoever you do to the least among you, you do to me. continued, Page 2 Charity, Unity, Fraternity & Patriotism Contents Chaplain s Message Fr. Chaplain s Message, cont. Therefore Advent time is not only the four weeks before December 25 when we celebrate His birth; Advent time is every day of our lives, preparing ourselves to be ready for Christ. We celebrate the future, the time when Christ will come again and we meet Him face to face. Our liturgical celebrations remind us to prepare and be ready for His coming. This is a joyful time, because we await our Messiah, our Savior. God s blessings, Father Josef Knight/Family of the Month Council 799 is proud to recognize the service of the following Members. Mike & Susan Hill For our Family of the Month, Council 799 honored Mike and Susan Hill. Mike currently serves as our Council s Chancellor and Susan is an active member of both the Catholic Daughters and the Council of Catholic Women. Mike and Susan spearhead our annual (and seemingly endless) garage sale efforts. We honored Mike and Susan as our Family of the Month for their efforts to organize the children s Halloween party that was held in conjunction with our Council s Oktoberfest on October 23. Bill DeMoss Council 799 honored Brother Bill DeMoss as its Knight of the Month. Bill has been a member of the Knights of Columbus for over forty years. He was selected as our Knight of the Month for his help in staging a number of last minute Boys Knights Out as the Rangers made their run to the World Series. Bill manned the kitchen to provide an assortment of goodies to the Ranger fans in attendance. Bill is also a stalwart member of the Friday morning Fourth Degree cooking crew and the Friday evening grilling crews during the summer. Grand Knight s Letter By John J. Little Best wishes to my Brother Knights: Is it really December already? I have two thoughts I would like to share with all of you. The first focuses upon the season of Advent that began on Sunday, November 28. In this blessed season, we are called upon to prepare ourselves to celebrate the Lord s coming into the world as man on Christmas Day. One way to prepare, and to keep Christ in Christmas, is by focusing upon the first principle of our order Charity. Advent gives each of us ample opportunities to share the gifts God has given each of us with those who are less fortunate. Council 799 will again have its annual Magi Tree project, for the benefit of those served by the Brady Center, and I m certain that each of our parishes will offer multiple opportunities to show our love for our neighbors through the practice of charity. My second thought concerns the Bishop s second annual Come Home for Christmas campaign. Through this campaign, the Bishop is reaching out to those who have drifted away from the Church, who have stopped attending on a regular basis, or who are angry with the Church or with God. His message is a direct and sincere one: Your faith community misses you and is incomplete without you, especially this time of the year. I suspect that the Bishop s invitation is directed toward at least a few of our Brother Knights who have become disconnected with the Church. I urge each of us to pray during this Advent season that our Brothers will accept the Bishop s invitation to come home for Christmas. Merry Christmas to all, John Little, Grand Knight Christmas Parties! Adults Christmas Party Friday, December 3 rd Starting at 7pm The Adult Christmas party is a joint effort between the Fourth Degree Assembly and KC799. Open to Members and Spouses, this should be a nice party with music and food to enjoy this holiday season. Kids Christmas Party Sunday, December 5 th 3pm to 5pm The annual Kids' Christmas party promises to be a great time for everyone. We will have crafts, cookie decorating, balloon animals, and a visit from a very special surprise guest. Oliver will have snacks and drinks for everyone. Council 799 Upcoming Events Bryan Dodge Event Dec 8 KC799 will host Bryan Dodge on December 8 th, starting at 7pm for an motivational seminar. This is an open event in the upstairs hall. Please invite your neighbors, spouses, friends, and parishes. Bryan Dodge is a professional speaker, author, and radio personality who stimulates personal and professional growth. His main message that life is good and growth is essential inspires people to take ownership of their own personal and professional development. The underlying thesis of all of Bryan Dodge's teachings is that "life is too short not to be happy, and too long not to do well." He teaches a stair step method of how high achievers and effective managers keep on the cutting edge and achieve excellence. His talented delivery style makes learning fun and memorable. For more info visit his website: http://www.bryandodge.com Boys Night Out Dec 12 Please join us in the lounge on Sunday Dec. 12 to watch the Cowboys vs. Eagles football game. We will have snacks, drink specials, and door prizes, so come on out! First Degree Dec 7 There will be a First Degree ceremonial at the December general meeting Dec. 7 th. Please invite Catholic gentlemen to join the Dallas Council 799. Candidates can meet with John Bane at a candidate orientation on Dec. 6 th. The combined First Degree and monthly meeting is an impressive way for new Members to see the involvement of our Council. Major Degree Dec 12 Please join your Brother Knights at 8:00 Mass on Sunday, December 12, at Saint Pius X. This is the first 'Knights Mass' in over two years at St Pius and a good turnout will not only be noticed, but will promote interest in our Order. Candidates for the Major Degree will be in attendance. A Second and Third Degree Ceremonial will follow at our hall beginning at about 10:00. Why not show support for the order by your attendance at one or both of these events? Annual Dues Statements Coming Due statements should be mailed by December 15 th for all Members. Please make a point to pay the dues as soon as possible. Your early payment is greatly appreciated. Drivers Needed in February Please make a note that we will be recruiting drivers for two different but equally important tasks in February 2011. The first is our annual Sisters Appreciate Dinner to be held on Sunday, February 13. Many of the nuns who serve our diocese do not have readily available transportation. Traditionally, we ask Brother Knights to volunteer to pick up the nuns in the morning so they can attend our event and to return them to their homes at the conclusion of the event. We ll be looking for volunteers at both the January and February meetings. The second is the 2011 Bishops Workshop held by the National Catholic Bioethics Center. Bishops from both North and South America will begin arriving in Dallas on Thursday, February 10, and will be departing as late as Thursday, February 17. We will be seeking volunteers to greet the Bishops at the airport and to drive them to and from Knights Helping Nuns On Saturday, Nov. 13 ten men from the Knights of Columbus participated in a one day service project for the Sisters of the Holy Family of the Nazereth in Grand Prairie. The combined effort cleared a small forest, cleaned out several yellow jacket nests, and helped relocate large objects. The nuns were extremely grateful for us making useable outdoor space out of that which "hadn't been touched in years" and have invited us back "as soon as possible." Thanks to everyone who made the day such a great success. Catholic Charities Truck Please contact Brian Bessner (214 454 7557) to volunteer to drive the World of Gifts truck to collect goods for Catholic Charities. Our Council needs drivers for Friday evenings and Sunday afternoons to drive the truck to/from St. Elizabeth Ann Seton in Plano. the Omni Mandalay in Las Colinas (the site of the conference). Further details on this effort will be in the January newsletter and posted on the 799 website. Angel Tree We need gifts for 75 kids this year (2 gifts per each kid) which means we need 150 gifts. David Salazar will have angels there for the general meeting and also on the Christmas tree in the lounge. Please bring your unwrapped gift back to KC by December 20. Any questions, please contact David Salazar (danddsal@sbcglobal.net) Office Painting Success 10 guys came out to do a little work on the KC Office on Nov 7. The work went quickly and the office looks much better! Thanks to Ski Staniszewski, Tony Casazza, Tim King, Herb Brady, Les Wells, Chuck Ehmann, John Guerra, Todd Kirby, Randy Huntress, and Gary Hernandez Bishop s Dinner Keynote Speaker is Supreme Knight Carl Anderson! Please mark your calendars now. On March 26, 2011, all area Knights are invited to a special KC two fer! In the morning we will have a Corporate Communion Mass celebrated by our own Bishop Kevin Farrell, Texas State Chaplain. Let s make a point to fill the Cathedral and show him that we support him as much as he supports the Knights. Later that evening the Bishop will host the annual Pro Life Dinner at the Anatole Hotel. The keynote speaker of the evening will be our Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson. This event includes a silent auction, and a great opportunity to connect with other pro life Knights in the area. (We are glad to report there were no injuries, except when Mike Hill "attempted" to imitate Johnny Carson!) Our fellow Knight Bob Feil will serve as director of the next retreat and Mike Hill has been invited to serve as co director. The next retreat is scheduled for May 12 15 be sure to pencil in the date on your calendar for an inspiring weekend of fellowship!
