Parish Mission Statement Immaculate Conception Catholic Church celebrates the Eucharist and proclaims the gospel in worship, through our love of God and for each other, and with our ministry to the marginalized. We journey together in our faith, united by our trust in Christ s love and mercy and the powerful intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Staff Connection... April 29, 2018 Immaculate Conception Church Our Parish Cemeteries: Our peaceful final resting places. Have you given much thought to our Parish cemeteries? Not likely, not a subject for casual conversation but when the time comes, all of us will become familiar with our cemeteries. They are sacred, blessed and dedicated as final resting places. They are places to make visits to our loved ones, friends and our fellow parishioners who once shared life and faith with us. We are fortunate that our Parish owns two cemeteries: Mount Olivet Cemetery on East State Street and Calvary Cemetery on 5 Mile Drive. Mt. Olivet was acquired around 1864 and continued burials until around 1915. In the early 1900 s burials began at Calvary Cemetery, our main resting place for our loved ones. Calvary Cemetery is about 40 acres, including the wooded lot behind the actual cemetery. In 1985, the Queen of Peace Mausoleum was constructed. Recent changes to the cemetery grounds include a new section for cremation burials. Both of our cemeteries are privately owned by the Parish. While we do not report to New York State, Diocese of Rochester Cemetery Policy states that we will comply with all NYS operational and financial policies. Because of our private status, we are not eligible for NYS funding. This leads me to the financial issues concerning our cemeteries. The Parish Pastor has overall responsibility for the cemeteries, while the Cemetery Advisory Committee is charged with operational and fiduciary oversight. This committee works in conjunction with the Parish Finance Counsel. Meeting monthly, The Cemetery Committee receives operational updates from the Cemetery Manager and financial updates from the Director of Administration and Finance. Our goal is for the cemetery to stand alone financially and not be a burden on the church budget. Over the last few years, this has been a challenge. As of February 28 the financial statements for the cemetery show an $11,710 deficit. Mt. Olivet expenses (mowing/trimming only) are about $2,400 per year and there are no funds to cover this. This has to be absorbed by the Calvary Cemetery budget. A few of the significant annual operational costs include personnel costs and insurance ($44,918), Facilities and Maintenance ($25,471) and Outsourcing Services such as backhoe services, fuel, supplies ($15, 641). Much of the budget shortfall this year is due to significantly reduced grave sales, down about $21,000. The Committee is most appreciative of the May second collection and hopefully this will close the budgetary gap somewhat. In addition we need to reduce expenditures while still maintaining an attractive and well groomed cemetery where visitors can visit family members and loved ones in a pleasant setting. Visits to our cemeteries are very much encouraged. A Memorial Day Mass will be celebrated at the Calvary cemetery location on May 28, 2018. Please join us for this special Mass. Feel free to direct any comments or suggestions to the Cemetery Committee. We need your input to guide us into the future to meet your needs and expectations. Thank you, Jim Moravec, Secretary, Cemetery Committee with assistance from Pat Welch Mass Schedule Monday & Thursday 12:10PM Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday 7AM Saturday 8:30AM Vigil Mass Saturday 4:30PM Sunday 8:30 & 10:30AM George Green Parish Center 113 North Geneva Street Ithaca, NY 14850 *** 607/273-6121 Hours: Mon. It is the time of year when we celebrate a special Mass and then a reception to thank our volunteers who have served in any way in the last year. Join us for Mass on Monday, May 7th at 5:30 pm followed by a reception in the parish hall. RSVP Deadline is Thursday, May 3rd (273-6121). The Parish Pastoral Council has 6 openings for the 2018-2019 year. We need 4 new members and 2 alternate members. Candidates will be able to meet current Council members, ask questions, and they will have an opportunity to express why they wish to serve on Council. God not only created us to be in relationship with him but also with others. We live in a time where our conversations are condensed to text messages and a maximum of 150 characters. Strong, healthy and intimate relationships are built on meaningful, caring conversations with others and are crucial for a healthy life. Here are some insights from Sean Covey from his book 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens. Keep Promises follow through on what you tell others you will do. This helps build trust. Do small acts of kindness Notice it doesn t say random acts of kindness. We should be kind all the time not just randomly. Be loyal Don t gossip about friends. Try to go one whole day with only saying positive things about others. (now there is a challenge) Listen God gave us two ears and one mouth so we could listen more and talk less. Say you re sorry - Pride can be a relationship killer. Admit when you are wrong and apologize.
