Faith Overhaul #8: From Cowardice to Courageous Numbers 13:26-33 Key Text: Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you (Deut. 31:6) Key Thought: When we have a deep, abiding relationship with God, His perfect love casts out all fear, and we move from cowardice to courage. 1. Intro & Context 2. The fear factor (a) The deceptiveness of fear (e.g. Num. 13:31-33; ) We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the same to them (Num. 13:33) (b) Fear's debilitating effects (e.g. Num. 14; 1 Sam. 17:11,24; Lk. 22:54-62) i.... they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden (Gen. 3:8) ii.... they all fled from [Goliath] in great fear (1 Sam. 17:24) iii. And they said to each other, We should choose a leader and go back to Egypt (Num. 14:4) 3. Profiles in courage (a) Caleb facing the giants (Num. 14:6-9; Josh. 14:6-14) (b) David facing the giant (1 Sam. 17) (c) Elijah taking on the 450 prophets of Baal (1 Kgs. 18:16-40) (d) Peter & John before the Sanhedrin (Acts 4:1-22) (e) They KNEW God would show up! Because they KNEW God, & knew Him to be faithful! 4. Growth in godly courage (a) An intimate relationship with God: Now devote your heart and soul to seeking the Lord... (1 Chr. 22:19) (b) Daily meditation in His Word: Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips;meditate on it day and night... (Josh. 1:8) (c) Prayer without ceasing: Pray continually (1 Ths. 5:17) (d) Saturated with the Holy Spirit: Do not put out the Spirit's fire (1 Ths. 5:19) (e) Good mentoring & counseling 5. Closing

Questions for Reflection I. Do you struggle with debilitating fears (i.e. of death, disease, failure, rejection, etc)? II. Are you saddened (sickened, angered) by fears that have altered your God-given identity? III. Are you ready to move from cowardice to courageous? Are you ready to go deeper, then, with God? PRAISES and PRAYER CONCERNS Praises: Dr. Walt Elwell s study of Ephesians. God loves us! Prayer Concerns: Enrique speedy healing from his surgery. All the Bible study groups.
