300 CE India

Word Wall Vocabulary: Bureaucracy: system of departments formed to do government work Caste: one of four social classes in India- priests, warriors, peasants or traders, and laborers Gupta Empire: second major empire in classical India Hinduism: a polytheistic religion that believes in karma and reincarnation

Causes of the Development of India After Ashoka died, the Mauryan Empire collapsed 500 years later, a man named Chandra Gupta (no relation to the first) became king of the Gupta Empire The Gupta Empire experienced a golden age (similar to that of Greece)

Turn and Talk How would you compare the political system of the Gupta Empire to the political systems in Greece and Rome? ANS: The Gupta Empire was a monarchy, which meant that leadership passed from father to son. The Greeks were a direct democracy, which meant that citizens voted directly for laws. The Romans were an indirect democracy, or republic, which meant that the Romans chose representatives who made political decisions.

Effects of the Development of India Golden Age of Gupta India produced many new works and ideas Math: value of pi, length of the solar year Astronomy: proved the earth was round Literature: drama, poems Performing arts: traveling shows combined drama and dance Hinduism, an Indian religion, became popular during the Gupta Empire

Turn and Talk What are some of the similarities between the Gupta Empire s Golden Age and the Golden Age of the Greeks? ANS: Both the Gupta Empire AND the Greeks produced mathematical ideas (GE: value of pi, G: Pythagorean Theorem), and performing arts (GE: poems and drama, G: comedies and tragedies)

Effects of the Development of India Hinduism is a polytheistic religion There are three main gods: Brahma, the creator; Vishnu, the protector; and Shiva, the destroyer Hinduism is very similar to Buddhism: both believe in reincarnation, karma, and the hope to be free from desire and suffering Hinduism, however, uses the caste system

Effects of the Development of India The caste system guided how Hindus lived, what they ate, and how they dressed If a person was born into a higher caste (such as a Brahmin, warrior, or merchant) it was because he had earned good karma in an earlier life However, if a person was born a laborer or untouchable, they had bad karma in a previous life

Guided Practice: Summary In the bottom portion of your c-notes, complete a summary over The Gupta Empire and Hinduism Remember- the question that you are trying to answer in your summary is the same question that we wrote at the beginning of class: IDENTIFY THE CAUSES AND DESCRIBE THE EFFECTS OF THE DEVELOPMENT OF INDIA Here are some sentence stems to help you out: The first ruler of the Gupta Empire was The Gupta Empire experienced a golden age and developed Hinduism is a, characterized by
