Pastor s Column December 1 2, 2018 They will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. With the invention of the GPS, reading a paper road map, the kind you used to be able to pick up at gas stations or order through Triple A, is becoming a lost art. These days people don t even want directions, preferring instead a street address they can plug into their smart phone or computer. Like telling time by the hands of a clock or dialing a number on a rotary phone, preparing for a trip using a map has been relegated to the scrap heap of history. To plan a journey using a roadmap, you would first have to find your intended destination, and then trace back your route to your starting point knowing the different symbols for US Interstates, State Highways, and local roads, and taking note of the towns along the way where you might have to stop to refuel, have a meal, use the bathroom, or rest during your trip. The GPS works in much the same way, all be it automatically, using satellites to determine location and computer algorithms with real time data to find the shortest, quickest, or least expensive options. When I enter an address into my car s GPS, it first finds that point and works backwards to connect it to wherever my vehicle currently happens to be. This weekend we begin a new liturgical year with the First Sunday of Advent. Our Old Testament reading from the Book of the Prophet Jeremiah hints at the birth of Our Savior which we are preparing to celebrate by proclaiming the prophecy: The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and Judah. In those days, in that time, I will raise up for David a just shoot; he shall do what is right and just in the land. Our Gospel, however, focuses not on that event from the past we are getting ready to celebrate, but rather points to the future towards which all of human history is heading, the end of the world and the Second Coming of Jesus. Amid some scary signs Jesus says, People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand. As we begin our Advent journey, we too should keep our focus on our final destination, our eternal happiness to be with God face to face one day in heaven, and not allow ourselves to get overly distracted by the busyness and anxiety of this time of year. We have as our roadmap our deposit of faith contained in Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition, safeguarded by our Bishops through their Apostolic Succession over the centuries. We also have within us a built in GPS, the gift of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us and leads us and guides towards our heavenly goal. If we need to ask directions, rest or refuel, we have the Sacraments, most notably Confirmation to affirm our route and the Eucharist to nourish and strengthen us along the way. And if we make a wrong turn and find ourselves lost because of our sins, we have the Sacrament of Reconciliation to help us recalculate and get back on the right path. Like any trip by car, there can be many dangers along our spiritual journey. We must listen to Jesus who tells us, Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent and to stand before the Son of Man. Safe travels this Advent, and speaking of journeys, please be sure to join us next Sunday, December 9 th at 4:00 PM for our Journey to the Inn and Tree Lighting as we Light the Bay for Christmas. Fr. Bob
