First Reading: Acts 6:1-7 During the early growth of the Church, the apostles realized that they needed more disciples in order to carry out effectively the ministry of the Church. The community selected seven men, one of whom was Stephen. Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:4-9 Citing many uses of the word stone in the sayings of Jesus and in the Old Testament, Peter urges the Christians to be living stones...an edifice of spirit. Gospel: John 14:1-12 MAY 21, 2017: SIXTH SUNDAY OF EASTER In this beautiful passage from the words of Jesus at the Last Supper, Jesus promises that he is preparing a place for the apostles. He tells them, I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me. When Philip asks Jesus to show them the Father, Jesus answers, Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly Sixth Sunday of Easter - May 21, 2017 Jesus said to his disciples If you love me you will keep my commandments. And I will ask the Father and he will give you another Advocate to be with you always, the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept because it neither sees nor knows him. But you know him because he remains with you. I will not leave you orphans, I will come to you And whoever loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and reveal myself to him. The priestly prayer of Jesus, similar to a pep talk or farewell speech, reassures the disciples of Jesus ongoing concern before His imminent departure. The promised Spirit offers life, protection and guidance to us all. How rarely do I treasure the fact that Jesus speaks to the Father on my behalf and promises me the gift of the Spirit when He leaves. That same promise continues today, as we need the Spirit. He continues to watch out for us in our need as He speaks to the Father on our behalf. The advocate is present to us all to guide and guard, to direct and sustain us on our journey of holiness. Basically Jesus tells me I am loved by all, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

This summer, we will have a schedule change to adapt to the drop in attendance. At St. Mathews Church, June 11 th - September 3 rd, the 8:00am & 9:00am Masses, will be combined into an 8:30am Mass. There will be plenty of reminders before it happens. Our Parish Name Cardinal Dolan has not accepted the three names for our parish that we submitted to him. The reason it took so long was that he wanted to have all the submitted requests before making any decisions. There are a number of parishes with the same names as the ones we submitted. The cardinal suggested the following three names: Pope John XXIII Pope John Paul II St. Matthew Our Lady of Perpetual Help We will have a vote on these three names soon. NEW TOTALS: 158 families/ individuals in our parish have contributed to the Cardinal s Appeal thus far. To date, we have raised $54,025 in pledges towards our $78,500 goal. We are 66.47% of the way there, but we still have further to go! If you have not yet made your contribution, envelopes are still available on the tables in the back of the church. www.cardinalsappeal.org Thank you for your support!
