Community FATHER MARK S MUSINGS VOL 3 NO 47 In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit We who use this phrase repeatedly could easily lose sight of the powerful mystery it expresses Today, Trinity Sunday, the Scriptures call for reflection on this central belief of Christianity: the Trinity One of the greatest gifts of the Christian faith is the dogma of the triune God: God is three (tri) and one (une) We name God as a Trinity of Father, Son, and Spirit, but only in light of Jesus Christ does such language and insight fully emerge In today s gospel, the eleven remaining disciples who went to the mountain with Jesus, worshipped and doubted Saint Matthew does not explain why they doubted, but just that they did Perhaps they were concerned about what was to come Or perhaps they were concerned about Jesus leaving them When Jesus came near and spoke to them, he gave them what is known as the Great Commission Power in heaven and earth was given to Jesus, and now he sends his disciples forth to form more disciples They are to baptize the disciple-to-be in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, the Trinitarian formula the Church has used for centuries when the baptismal water is poured Jesus concludes with words of reassurance to his disciples He will be with them as they go forth in mission and will remain with them forever, until the end of time As we observe Memorial Day this weekend, it is more than just a day to set aside to remember those who gave their lives for the freedoms we enjoy today It is also a day on which we honor them, because of their lives, along with the lives of our police and other civil authorities, and even the lives of the unborn, rank on par with our own precious lives We are precious in the eyes of God our creator Each and every one of us is unique and irreplaceable in God s sight God formed us before our birth, and guided us afterward with the truth of his word Each of us must recognize the responsibility that comes with the gift of life; yours, mine, or of the fallen comrade Let us gather this Memorial Day in grateful remembrance of the life given in defense our country and in the liberation of people in other lands And let us not forget all of our brothers and sisters who sleep under our careful watch in our cemeteries waiting the day of our Lord s return Since we do not have a cemetery, I invite you to join me for Mass on Memorial Day, Monday, May 28 at 9:00 am outdoors around the flag pole and the statue of St Francis on the southeast corner of our campus You are welcome to bring lawn chairs or a blanket to sit on In case of inclement weather, the Mass will be held in the Chapel Welcome to our new summer schedule with Sunday Mass at 9:00 am ONLY This will remain through Labor Day weekend Children s Liturgy of the Word will continue to be offered during the summer at the 9:00 Mass I realize this may be an inconvenience for some and will take some time to adjust We will return to 8:30 am & 10:30 am on Sunday, September 9 The Saturday Mass will remain at 5:00 pm This coming Friday, June 1 is our monthly day of Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament The Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will conclude the 9:00 am Mass, the Rosary and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy immediately follow and Adoration continues until 7:00 pm with the simple reposition of the Blessed Sacrament Adoration is open to everyone You are welcome to sign up and commit to a regular hour of prayer or stop in for a few minutes as your schedule allows The Church requires at least one person to be present when the Blessed Sacrament is exposed in the Monstrance for adoration and it is always good to have two or three in case someone is unable to make their commitment As I understand several of our hours are down to one or two people If you are interested in signing up for an hour of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament on the First Friday of every month, please let me know Save the date for our annual Feast Day Celebration; Saturday, September 29 from 10:30-5:00 pm If you would like to be a part of the planning of this year s Festival, please let me know I will be scheduling the first planning meeting in early June Ideas for our Eightieth Jubilee Celebration are beginning to emerge and we will be announcing a save the date for those festivities in the coming week or two The parish office will be closed on Memorial Day, May 28 In case of a pastoral emergency (to request the sacrament of the anointing or to notify us of a death) when the office is closed, please call 651-436- 1746 and I will be paged immediately PAX ET BONUM Fr Mark Saint Francis of Assisi Parish Page 3
