Notes for SARAH EMBREE: Is this Sarah's father? On the Both of April, was issued the first paper ever established in America for the sole purpose of advocating the abolition of slavery. It was edited and published by Elihu Embree, but printed at the office of the East Tennessee Patriot a paper which had been established a short time before by Jacob Howard, a printer from Baltimore. Mr. Embree was one of two brothers, Elijah and Elihu Embree, who at that time were operating extensive iron works in Sullivan County. He died on December 4, 1820, and the paper was discontinued to be revived about two years later at Greeneville. PETITION FOR IRON WORKS 1820 To the honorable Court for the county of Washington Tennessee now in Session in Jonesborough The petition of the under Subscribers humbly sheweth that they being engaged in the business of Iron Works, in your County on Nolichucky river, wish to avail themselves of the benefits of an act of the General Assembly of this State passed Nov. 2nd 1809 to encourage the building of Iron Works and for this purpose they pray your honorable body to appoint a jury of twelve freeholders, to view & lay off three thousand acres of such land as the law allows, for the use of their forge which is now in operation on Nolichucky river. They also having it in prospect to erect a blast furnace for the purpose of making castings & pig iron, in Bumpus Cove, about two miles distant from the said forge, wish the same jury to be authorised to lay off three thousand acres of land for the use & benefit of the said intended furnace. 4th Month l9th 1820 Elihu & Elijah Embree Jury to wit the same as appointed. ELIJAH EMBREE'S PETITION 1824 To the worshipfull Court of Pleas & Quarter Session for Washington County January term 1824 Your petitioner humbly represents that he entered building on Iron Works in this County on the waters of Nolichucky river about eleven miles from Jonesborough in the vacinity of which there is large quantities of unappropriated land unfit for cultivation (to wit) near the land of John Dekins, Abram Bails, Jonathan Tucker, Phillip Parks and other land of your petitioner Your petitioner therefore humbly prays your honourable body to appoint a jury of view & report three thousand acres of land in the vacinity of his intended Iron Works agreeable to an act of the General Assembly of this State entitled an Act to encourage the building of Iron Works Your petitioner has never applied for land for the benefit of the above named Iron Works before. REPORT OF JURY ON ELIJAH EMBREE'S PETITION 1824 We the Jury summoned & sworn in persuance of an order of the County Court of Washington County to view Three Thousand acres of land for the benefit of Elijah Embree's agreeable to an act of Assembly appropreating lands unfit for cultivation for the benefit of Iron Works have this day viewed the following tracts of land and do report them in our estimation unfit for cultivation and so such description as the law contemplated appropiating for the encouragement of Iron Works - situate in the neighborhood of said Embree Bumpus Cove Iron Works & bounded as follows: One track containing Seven hundred acres begining at the west corner of a forty acre entry lately made by said Embree in Bumpus Cove running with the line of said entry East to an entry William P. Chester lately made thence along the line of said W.P. Chester's entry to the line of said Embree other lands thence along said Embree's lands & the mountain for Compliment. One tract of three hundred acres begining thirty poles from the Second corner of a track of land known by the name of the Lemon Tract on the line of a Three hundred acre Tract of said Embree Bot of W.P. Chester to be one hundred poles wide at the begining and to include a grove of Timber near the head of Wodies Creek. One Track Containing Seventy five acres begining at a Gum Saplin Corner to the above mentioned Three hundred Acre Track to include a of the Mountain where a number of Gum Trees Stand. One Track containing one hundred acres adjoining a small entry lately made by said Embree on the north side of Bumpus Cove near the three forks of Bumpus Creek to run along the lines of a Track lately owned by Water (?) King and a Track by said Embree Bot of W.P. Chester for compliments. One Track of Seventy five acres adjoining the above Tracks near the three forks of the creek on South side of Bumpus Cove. One other Track containing twelve hundred acres including the mill Stone Branch begining on the north side of Nolachucky River opposite Reuben Bayless Sawmill to run up a gap in the Buffalo Mountain onto the dividing Ridge between the Mill Stone Branch & dry Creek and to keep on the Ridges that divide the waters of the Mill Stone Branch from other waters until it intersects John Deakins line thence with his line to the Jump Hill thence down the River to the begining. One other Track containing two hundred & fifty acres adjoining the lower end of nine hundred and Thirty acres Bought of W.P. Clarksville Iron Furnace (State 107 13 miles south of Jonesborough) 1.7 Miles south are the ruins of the Clarksville Iron Furnace. The stone stack was built in 1833 by Montgomery Stuart, Elijah Embree and Edward West. The ore used was hauled in wagons across the mountain from the mines in Bumpass Cove. The iron produced was used locally and also was flat-boated down the river as far as Alabama. Operations ceased in 1844. Thomas Embree (TN 353, 5.7 miles from Jonesborough city limits) In 1791, Seth Smith, a Pennsylvania stonemason, built the house 0.6 mile W. of Telford and 300 yards N. of the road for the Quaker father of Ellihu Embree, an early abolitionist, and his brother, Elijah, an early ironmaster. The family came from New Jersey. Sarah Hawkins, first wife of John Sevier, is buried near the house. Morrison age 33, Eliza J. 33 Four Children are listed: John W, age 9; Hester E, Age 7; Jane P. Age 5; Mary S. Age 3. We can also verify William Whitfield as their son born in 1850 from his death records. William was 33 yrs old in the 1850 census. For some reason, the Washington County, Tennessee Federal Census does not give the birthplace of the parentss. William Whitfield Morrison, son of W. D. and Eliza Morrison died of lockjaw. 1850 Federal Census Index: Name: Morrison, Eliza J. Age 33 in 1850 Year: 1850 County: Washington Township: 4Th Sub Division State: Tennessee Page: 29 1870 Federal Census Name: Morrison, W.D. age 53 in 1870; Eliza J. 52; Jane age 22; Whitfield age 19; Embree, age 16; Thornburgh age 90 M. This is likely Eliza's father. All are shown as born in Tennessee. W. D.'s Occupation is given as a carpenter. The only William Morrison located in 1880 was living at the Iron Works but listed as age 60. But only index and age no list of dependents included but we know he lived beyond 1891.
