Dear Parishioners, Looking back Last Sunday: The Baptism of the Lord. Do you remember your Baptism? Most of us do not. That s why we have this Feast to remind us of who we are in Jesus. At Jesus s Baptism, His Identity and Mission were publically confirmed by the Father: This is my Beloved Son, in Whom I am well pleased. We know from the other Synoptic Gospels that Jesus and John the Baptist had a little dispute on the banks of the River Jordan about who was supposed to Baptize Whom. And Jesus says that it needs to be this way. Pope Benedict XVI in his book, Jesus of Nazareth, describes how Jesus blended in with the sea of humanity gathered on the banks of the river. In being baptized, Jesus, who did not need baptism, is showing us how we can be both cleansed and become his brothers and sisters and so become children of God. But we ought to remember that Baptism is to the Christian Life what a wedding is to Marriage: it s just the beginning of the relationship! If you said to your spouse I do! on your wedding day and then never saw or spoke to her again until you were about to die, or worse, never, that s not going to work. You re married, but you never lived marriage! So in the same way, we need to persevere and grow daily in our relationship with God and His Family, the Church. Imagine you are with Jesus at His Baptism and He s inviting you down to the water to be baptized with Him. May you hear the voice of the Father speaking over you in Jesus, You are my beloved son, You are my beloved daughter, in you I am well pleased! THANK YOU! To everyone for all their kindnesses and gifts and cards over the holidays. I m running out of room in my kitchen to hang all the cards. Might have to start circling the house here next year. Please know I m horrible at thank you cards, so here s my THANK YOU to all for a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Liturgy of the Hours The Divine Office Evening Prayer/Vespers One of our New Year s resolutions at St. Mary s is to continue to unpack the riches of the whole liturgy with our parish. To that end, we are going to start adding Vespers to nearly every evening Mass that is celebrated at St. Mary s. We are starting this month with the Tuesday Evening Masses at St. Mary s. This adds about 5-10 minutes to the Mass, and helps us to pray more in unison with the entire breath of the Church that goes back 3,000 years into the Psalms of the Jewish Temple. It also helps Father fulfill his Evening Prayer obligations more easily :). We hope that you will be nourished by the experience of Vespers with Evening Prayer and inscribe the Psalms and Canticles into your heart! - Fr. Straz Reflections Sacramental Information Call St. Mary Office at 360-293-2101 for more information Infant Baptism The Tragedy of Rejecting Jesus A profound need to resolve once and for all the question of God as a personal reality: Why does this need not drive every soul? If it can be ignored so readily, does this suggest that many people are simply uninterested in ultimate religious questions? Or does this indifference reflect a certain spiritual sloth and a preference to evade the hard search for religious truth? Another possibility, a form of wishful thinking, would also seem likely. Perhaps many people think that their own decision alone determines the reality or unreality of God. In this view, there is no God if one commits to a conviction of his non-existence. The existence of God depends solely on believing or not believing in him. Without one s personal belief, he has no basis to exist. If I choose to consider God an impossibility, he simply cannot exist. My personal conviction determines God s existence and settles the matter. Without arguing explicitly in this manner, it would seem that many people adopt this line of thought, despite its illogic. The obvious possibility that the existence of any reality beyond ourselves does not require our conviction in order to be quite real, and the serious consequence this might entail if the reality in question is God, does not seem to occur to them. They have made their wager; it is enough. The contemplative must find in this tragic conclusion a great and painful provocation. FATHER DONALD HAGGERTY Father Haggerty, a priest of the Archdiocese of New York, is currently serving at Saint Patrick s Cathedral in New York City. Call the Parish Office to schedule a preparation class and baptism. Those wishing to have their baby baptized must be practicing Catholics. Adult or Child Baptism, Confirmation, or Adults Considering Becoming Catholic Call the Faith Formation Office to learn more about the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adult (RCIA), or Rite of Christian Initiation for Children (RCIC). Weddings Weddings require a 6-month notice and preparation. Sacrament of the Sick (Anointing) Please let us know if someone is seriously ill.
