Amen.

Pastor s Corner Dear Parishioners, On Wednesday, July 12 th, we are hosting Father Joey Faller from the Philippines for a charismatic healing Mass at 7 pm in our church. All are welcome. Hmmmm the rapture. Many of us have probably heard of this concept. You might be wondering about the Catholic perspective. The term rapture comes from the 18 th century doctrine taught by certain groups of fundamentalist Christians. They believe that at the end of the world Jesus will come on the clouds of heaven and those raptured will caught up in the air to be with Christ. These raptured folks will be separated from sinners who will remain on the earth to endure a period of great suffering. Many born again Christians believe that since they accepted Jesus as their personal Savior they will be removed from the earth in order to spare them from the time period when God s wrath will be inflicted against everybody else remaining on earth. Where does this term come from? Rapture comes from the Latin word rapiemur which appears in St. Paul s first letter to the Thessalonians in the Latin Vulgate Catholic translation of the Bible. Rapiemur means we will shall be raised up or caught up. The text reads as follows: The dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord (1 Thess. 4:16-17). The Catholic belief in the return of Christ for the Final Judgment, (called the Second coming, with His birth in Bethlehem being the First), is summarized in the Nicene Creed: Christ has died, Christ has Risen, Christ will come again to judge the living and the dead. The Catholic Church teaches that, at the end of time, Jesus will return to judge the living and the dead. At this time, everyone who is dead, just and unjust, will have a bodily resurrection and those who are alive, will have their bodies transformed for eternity. Those still in Purgatory will be released, joining the risen and the still-living, transformed just. Then the Last Judgment will take place. The just will live with God, the unjust will be punished to live eternally without God. All these will happen on the last day as a one-stage event. Generally, we Catholics do not use this term rapture. We also don t believe that there will be any type of rapture event prior to the Second Coming. The Church has actually condemned the notion of two resurrections from the dead. Those who are still alive in Christ at His return will be transformed in the twinkling of an eye and caught up in the clouds with the Lord, but that will take place on the Last Day. [Source: Fr. Creating boundaries for mobile phone Parents and caregivers may be more inclined during summertime to allow children to use mobile phones, especially when school is not in session. Consider the following tips to establish boundaries and help keep children safe when using a mobile phone: --Contact service provider to block internet access and calls from unapproved phone numbers. --Designate certain times that cell phone must be turned off (family meals, school hours, after 10 p.m.) --Insist that parental permission is required for the download of any and all apps. To request a copy of the VIRTUS article "What Age is Appropriate for Children to be Provided with a Cell Phone?" call (213) 637-7227 or email jvienna@la-archdiocese.org

More Parish News WEARING OUR SUNDAY BEST Does God really care what we wear to church when we worship? Probably not but our neighbors do and this is the point. God is not distracted by the young man whose pants are hanging 10 inches below his waist and whose striped boxers are showing, but the family in the pew behind him is. God s attention is not diverted by the woman whose neckline is showing off much more than her neck, but the Eucharistic Minister giving her communion is. God s concentration is not broken by the people in cut-offs, flip-flops, and sleeveless shirts, but the elderly woman sitting next to them in the pew is. God may not care what we wear to church, but our neighbors do. Catholic worship is never just a Me and Jesus sort of thing; it always involves community. The reason we ask folks to keep quiet in church isn t because God is offended by our talking; it is because our neighbors deserve a place where they can pray in silence before and after Mass. The same is true for proper dress at Mass. Dressing well can assist the community in praying well it can help alleviate distraction. Dressing appropriately is a sign of respect for our Lord as well as our brothers and sisters in Christ. (The idea is to wear something more special than the attire we wear around the house, running errands, or working out in when we get ready for church.) HOLY FAMILY MISSION STATEMENT As disciples of Christ, Holy Family Parish is committed to being a more caring, united Catholic community of faith that welcomes all ages, cultures, and walks of life and strives to build the Kingdom of God.
