William Penn laid out-the city of Philadelphia, known in the early days as' the city of Brotherly Love. William Penn preached to ihe settlers, preached to the Indians. He was loved and respected by the natives, they called him the Great White Father. It's a question whether any man in the settlement of any part of America was ever as beloved and respected as Rev. William Penn. We live in an age when ministers are shifted about like furniture or baggage. Four or five years in many denominations and the preacher must move. The field is like a checker board. Perhaps many ministers deserve shifting frequently, perhaps they gain experience as they move about, perhaps it is for the good of the cause, but mark, omitting extenuating circumstances, the few preachers who leave their names high on the cliffs of human history stick to one place. They grow stronger with the years, they endear themselves to the people, they go about doing good. No star of the first magnitude in the, ministry ever left his parish under forty years of service. "A minister is small and weak who must move on in four years. i It's debatable whether this country or any country ever produced a preacher equal to Henry Ward Beecher. Moody started his mission work in Chicago and out from that center he labored all his life, a few more than forty years. George Truett, the greatest preacher in the Baptist denomination, has been in Dallas, Texas, for forty years. Russell Conwell spent fifty years in Temple church in Philadelphia. A great church, two hospitals and a university remain to grace his memory.
