74919128111854 Friday, June 23, 2017 - Term 2- Week 9 Dear Parents and Friends of Sacred Heart, Today is the feast of Sacred Heart, the namesake of our school. It is a feast that celebrates Jesus love for us. He showed this by giving his life for us. How do we know Jesus loves us? We know when we meet people who witness to God s love for us through their words and deeds. Today Father Phil challenged the children to be witnesses to Jesus love by asking them, Are you being as kind and considerate to others (at school) as Jesus would want you to be. We will be encouraging the children to continue doing this at school at all times. Four classes were surprised yesterday when Chef Stephan agreed to accept their challenge and turn some treats into sugar free treats next week. The children were very excited to have their sugar free treats today at morning tea. Many thanks to Chef Stephan and Alex who have rallied a large number of parents to support this initiative. Many thanks for the support that parents and friends who have supported the children in this challenge. Congratulations to all the recipients of the Blue Awards this week. Many thanks to Claudia Portale from McGrath real estate for sponsoring our awards. One of our students was acknowledged for a particular character strength at the awards. Ella Agar from Year 6 was a awarded a police commendation for honesty. Ella recently found a ring while out walking with her family. Ella chose to turn the ring into the local police station. Unbeknown to Ella the ring was a much loved and very expensive ring. The owner of the ring and the police were so impressed by Ella s honesty that they wanted to acknowledge Ella for her deed. We are very proud of Ella for acting in such a way that her family and school can be very proud of her. Many thanks to all our teachers for their thorough preparation and investment in time in preparing for the parent teacher interviews. An educational consultant I have worked with often challenges teachers with a question asked on behalf of the student: Do you know me well enough to teach me? I can confidently say that our teachers at Sacred Heart know your child as a person and as a learner. As we move towards our break I would like to thank the teachers for their enthusiasm for learning, their commitment to caring for their students and their professionalism in all they do. Our Staff Development Day for Term Three is on the 17th July. Students will commence school on the 18th July. Our Staff Development Day will continue our professional development in Quality Literacy. The day will focus on Spelling and ways to improve our children s knowledge and on reading (particularly in comprehension strategies) You are all invited to attend our P and F meeting at 7pm on Tuesday the 27th of June in the school hall. Regards, Julie Caldwell 8 Cardinal Street, MOSMAN NSW 2088 t: (02) 99696600 f: (02)9960 4312 e: info@shmosman.catholic.edu.au www.shmosman.catholic.edu.au Page 1

Term Dates for 2017 Term 2 Monday, April 24 th Friday, June 30 th Term 3 Tuesday, July 18 th Friday, Sept 22 nd Term 4 Monday, October 9 th Friday, Dec 15 th Pupil Free Days for 2017 Monday, July 17 th Important Dates Term 1 Term 2 Dates June 2017 Tuesday 27 th P&F Meeting Hall 7pm (New date) Friday 30 th Term 2 concludes distributing the goods and making them presentable for those most in need in our community. This was especially important today as students are working in small groups in a range of activities related to faith, creativity, games, peer support, sport, technology, dance and music. It was a fabulous exhibition of all the reasons we are all so proud to be a part of the Sacred Heart community. The Year 6 Leadership Teams designed, prepared and led a range of activities for students of all grades for almost two hours, closely supervised by our vigilant and supportive teachers. We are all looking forward to reading the feedback from teachers around the performance and attitude of our Leaders. We look forward to celebrating the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in 2018. Well done to everyone who assisted this year. Sacred Heart Feast Day Sacred Heart Feast Day 2017 This morning, we celebrated the Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus (often known as Sacred Heart Feast Day). The day started as Year 4 teachers and students led us in a beautiful Mass with Fr Phil and Deacon Sebastian. It was great to hear Fr Phil reiterate our key message of the day: friendship and inclusion, as we found that it echoed throughout the day. The music was a particular highlight at our Mass with Mrs Loughland and Mrs Cotty showing their usual flair for song, music and reverence. Special mention to all of the student soloists and musicians, particularly Ruby Parker from Year 6 who was brave enough to continue her solo despite the music cutting out halfway through. Quite a courageous feat, and to say it did not affect her performance at all goes to show the talent with which she has been blessed. Well done all! During the Mass, we were joined by Anne O Driscoll from the St Vincent de Paul who came to collect the amazing hampers for the Vinnies Winter Appeal. Many thanks to parents and families for their contributions. Additional thanks to Michelle Tam and Siobhan Roberts-Thomson and all the parent helpers for all of their effort in preparing the hampers, evenly www.shmosman.catholic.edu.au Page 2

National Refugee week commenced last Sunday to create awareness of our brothers and sisters in need all over the world. Perhaps it s a good time to join your family in a prayer: Lord Jesus, when you multiplied the loaves and fishes, You provided more than food for the body. You offered us the gift of yourself, the gift which satisfies every hunger and quenches every thirst. Your disciples were filled with fear and doubt, But you poured out your love and compassion on the migrant crowd, welcoming them as brothers and sisters. Like your disciples, we too are filled with fear and doubt and even suspicion. We build barriers in our hearts and in our minds. Lord Jesus, help us by your grace, to banish fear from our hearts. Upcoming Whole School Masses St Mary of the Cross Feast Day - 8 August Feast of the Assumption - 15 August Celebration of the Ordination of Deacon Sebastian - Late August - date to be confirmed Mr Nick Brierley Religious Education Co-ordinator Family Educator News That we may embrace and welcome migrants and refugees with joy and generosity. To give witness to your love for all people, as we celebrate the many gifts they bring. Amen Stop Pray and Reflect SPaR.10 minutes!! Following a film clip on a wonderful community let by Rabbi Brockman in Connecticut, we had an interesting discussion on migration and refugees, which lead to thinking about ways we can help our own communities who are in need. We can all contribute in a small way. We just need to reflect on this and ask for guidance. If you have a chance, jump onto youtube and type in #faithoverfear. There are some inspirational stories to be told. Thank you to Annina Warner who brought in a beautiful sugar free berry cheesecake to share. So delicious and so guilt free! The sun is shining, the rain has disappeared and we re enjoying a pleasant winter s day in our beautiful city. It s a great time to thank God for our life, here in sunny Mosman and perhaps it s a time for reflection, too. Please join us next week! Thursdays at 9am in the library. Our Hearts of Prayer tree. www.shmosman.catholic.edu.au Page 3

Our Hearts of Prayer tree is looking amazing! The children are really reflecting on what it means to see The Divine in everyday people. Keep them coming in! There is a box in the school office for collection or you can just hand them in to your class teacher who will direct them my way. Prayers and Intentions We pray for the Carvahlo family on the passing of the children s grandfather. May he rest in peace. We pray for Daniel s (year 5 ) dad. He said a special rosary for him so that he gets better soon. We pray for Izzy s (year 4) grandmother who has more spirit and strength than a lot of younger ladies (including myself). We hope she gets well soon. We pray for all our families and their loved ones who have been diagnosed with illnesses. We pray for our refugees and displaced communities all over the world. If anyone would like to add prayers and intentions, please email me at mary.lozina@syd.catholic.edu.au Scripture Teachers needed. Scripture teaching is I See a rewarding, Jesus spiritual way to when.. volunteer your time (one hour a week). The lessons are planned and full support is given. If you are interested, please call me to have a chat. I have taught for years and loved it! Parish bulletin link: http://www.shnparish.org.au/index.php?option=com _content&view=article&id=75&itemid=55 May God guide you gently through the week-end. Mary Lozina Family Educator SHM Rosary Group The children learnt about the fifth joyful mystery, which was finding Jesus in the temple. Mary and Joseph went to Jersualem in observance of a religious celebration only to find Jesus already there! What relief and frustration they must have felt! This mystery teaches us that the family unit must live, work and pray together. It also reminds us that Jesus was put on Earth to serve a greater need. Rosary group will be held during first lunch in week 10. St Vincent De Paul volunteers needed Are you interested in some volunteer work for a great cause? Please email me for more details at mary.lozina@syd.catholic.edu.au Parish events. Sacred Heart Feast day morning tea celebration After 9am Mass on Sunday 25 th June. Please bring a plate to share! Cana communities open day see Flyer at the end of the newsletter Sugar Free Challenge June 19-26th THANKYOU everyone for your amazing support for the Sugar Free Challenge. I am so proud of our children and their parents for taking on this challenge and exceeding our target in terms of fundraising. www.shmosman.catholic.edu.au Page 4

So far we have raised almost $7,000 for our beautiful school and I know many families are waiting for the children to finish the challenge before putting the money into Trybooking - so there is more money to come in which is great. Our hope is that it has also created awareness for the children as to what they eat. Some of those sugar feeding bacteria in tummies might have died off and they may so they might even continue eating less sugar! (here's hoping!). A little admin re Collection of Sponsorship $$: implement further initiatives across the school. Students will be able to identify personal and whole of school goals to further address bullying and build their own resilience. Ask students what they have learnt and what else they would like to learn about having good relationships. Contact us with your ideas. Thank you to all the participating students, the Peer Leaders, our staff and you as parents for your support. Major Fundraiser 2017 TRYBOOKING will be closing off for the Sugar Free Challenge at Midnight on Monday the 26th June. (if you put all of your child's sponsorship into Trybooking there is no need to return the sponsorship form). It is easier for everyone if it is in Trybooking. Cash collections: I will be at school (Silver seats from 8.20 and then for a few minutes after assembly) with volunteers Monday Morning to collect cash sponsorships. Please ensure your child's sponsorship form with their name and class clearly labelled is included in an envelope with the cash. We will be counting and sorting data on Tuesday to finalise the winners, so we need all money either in Trybooking or delivered as cash no later than Tuesday morning for it to count towards prizes. Again - thankyou all for your amazing support of this initiative! Peer Support Session 5: Know your rights Session 8 -Take the lead The final session in our Stronger Together Peer Support module summarises skills learnt in previous sessions and provides an opportunity to plan to Donations for the Fundraiser- we need YOU!
