Christ Lutheran News October, 2018 Pumpkin Prayer Dear Jesus, As I carve my pumpkin, help me pray this prayer: Open my mind so I can learn about You; (Cut the top off the pumpkin) Know that the Lord is God. Psalm 100:3 Take all my sin and forgive the wrong that I do. (Clean out the inside.) If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us. 1 John 1:9 Open my eyes so Your love I will see; (Cut eyes shaped like hearts.) Open my eyes that I may see, wondrous things from your law. Psalm 119:18 I m sorry for times I ve turned up my nose at what You ve given to me. (Cut a nose in the shape of a cross.) Create in me a clean heart O God. Psalm 51:10 Open my ears so Your Word I will hear; (Cut ears shaped like the Bible.) Incline your ear and come to Me Isaiah 55:3 Open my mouth to tell others You re near. (Cut a mouth in the shape of a fish.) declare the works of the Lord. Psalm 119:18 Let Your light shine in all I say and do! Amen. (put a candle inside and light it.) (Jesus said) Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven Matthew 5:16 Ask God to fill you up so He can shine brightly through you. Share your faith with your friends and neighbors as you tell them about your special pumpkin! We will seek God s will, share God s love, and serve as Christ s people.

From the Interim... Council Minutes Hello, I m intentional interim Pastor Grant Fischer. Don t get hung up on the title or what to call me. It s okay to call me Grant, Pastor, Pastor Grant or Reverend Fischer. My work here among you is the same. As an intentional interim my work is to prepare the way for a new settled called pastor for Christ Lutheran and to keep the anxiety level low. At times of change in congregations, people can become anxious about their future, that is one of the reasons the word intentional is part of an interims title. Interims intentionally are called to continue to provide continuity and pastoral ministry to congregations during the change of pastoral call. When people become anxious they tend to react, sometimes in unhealthy ways, rather than to think logically and deliberately about their next step. Interims work to focus congregations to assess their past, because the past has a bearing on the present and the future, to assess the present ministry, to seek either a new direction for a congregation s ministry or to invigorate an established ministry that has lost momentum or to tweak a ministry that is working but could be working better and more affectively. The operative thought is to seek God s desired future for God s people in this place. The time that the process takes varies and is dependent upon the work of the transition team and cooperation of the members of the congregation. Your transition team has already done considerable good work on the Mission Site Profile (MSP), so I would expect that if there are no changes to the MSP the congregation s council will approve the MSP and forward it the Synod Office in October. The usual thought is to find someone who does ministry like Jesus, preaches like the Apostle Paul and attracts new members and youth like the Pied Piper. Those expectations are unrealistic and detrimental to the overall process of finding the person that God has already chosen to lead Christ Lutheran to new opportunities in its ongoing ministry and mission. The watch word here is patience. Enjoy the journey God that is taking you on and calling you to deepen your and service to others. May God continue to bless our work together. 4 Christ Lutheran Church Summary of Executive Council Minutes September 12, 2018 The meeting was called to order by President elect Jerry Moline. Worship at Christ Lutheran In response to feedback received in June during our focus group discussions, your church musicians have been implementing changes in our Sunday morning liturgy and in the worship music for both Saturday and Sunday services. We decided to try the following schedule: Saturday services will remain Stream services with communion every week The first Sunday of the month we'll have communion, we'll use the ELW (hymnal) Setting Ten and most of the music will be led with the organ The second and fourth Sundays of the month we'll use the Stream service and the music will be led with the piano, guitar and drum The third Sundays of the month we'll have communion, we'll use the ELW (hymnal) Setting Six and the music will be led with piano and other instruments and sometimes organ We appreciate your patience as we learn new songs and liturgy. We are motivated to improve your worship experience at Christ Lutheran and encourage anyone who is interested in serving with us in music leadership to talk to us. ~Heidi Winter, Brenda Whitehead and Theresa Nysetvold Adult Education A video adult education opportunity began on September 23 in the Chapel Lounge at 10:15 a.m. The title of the class is "Leading Change: Church Leadership Amid Turmoil" with Dr. Peter L. Steinke. While the title suggests that it is geared just for leaders, the material being offered is such that all members of Christ Lutheran will benefit from engaging this material. Grab a cup of coffee and join us for information and stimulating conversation. Choir Begins Choir practice will begin on October 3 at 7:00 pm in the balcony. (You are welcome to come early for supper at 6:15 and join the confirmation youth for their worship time.) We plan to sing on October 7. Choir will follow the church schedule for Wednesday nights, so there won't be practice on the October 17 or 31. We plan to sing the first and third Sundays, and we will also sing on Confirmation Sunday, October 28. Any new voices are welcome to join us. Cajon Drum The wooden box drum that is being used in worship is called a "cajon" drum. It was made by Cal Wurpts and we are so thankful for the creativity and time he gave to this project. The cajon is very lightweight, and has a hole in the back with strings and snares that vibrate when different areas of the drum are beat. The musician is challenged to use his/her hands, fingers, and knuckles to produce a variety of sounds to match the music. We are grateful for the hands that made the drum and the hands that play the drum! 8 9
