1 Sunday, September 10, 2017-23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time OUR PATRONAL FEAST DAY ON FRIDAY...A DOUBLE CELEBRATION by Bishop Robert F. Morneau: On this feast of Our Lady of Sorrows, we witness Jesus mother standing by the cross, standing not only by her Son but by suffering humanity. Mary s sorrow is grounded in her compassion. She identifies with those who experience isolation and broken relationships, with those who know poverty and social fragmentation. Mary probably had something to do with the vocation of Amalia Streitel, the young German woman who in 1883 founded the Franciscan community known as the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother. This international community ministers to individuals who experience deprivation, social fragmentation, family disintegration, and personal isolation. The community also has a large health-care network. Today the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother serve in the United States, Italy, Austria, Brazil, Germany, Tanzania, and numerous Caribbean islands. What a witness to the Gospel and to God s great love and mercy. And here is the paradox. My experience of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother has been that of joy. In reaching out to those in need and embracing their pain and sorrow, these sisters experience the joy that only Christ can give. Similarly, St. Teresa of Calcutta, for all her interior suffering and darkness, was also known as the apostle of joy. Sorrow and joy are not incompatible when the Holy Spirit is present. Today we have a double celebration: Our Lady of Sorrows and Our Lady of Joy. Robert F. Morneau is pastor of Resurrection Parish in Green Bay, Wisconsin and auxiliary bishop emeritus of the Diocese of Green Bay. THE STATIONS OF THE SORROWS OF MARY & OUR PATRONAL FEAST DAY THIS FRIDAY: Thanks to all who are participating in the seven evenings of the prayer novena devotion from Saturday, September 9th to Friday, September 15th- our Patronal Feast Day. The novena concludes Friday - our Patronal Feast Day - with a Mass at 6:30pm. We are blessed to have our parish and school under the patronage of Mary, Our Mother of Sorrows. Our most popular prayer shrine within the church is the Pieta, where Mary is depicted holding the dead body of Jesus in her arms. So many people frequent that space unburdening and trusting the sufferings and sorrows of life through the intercession of our compassionate mother. The twelfth station shrine is probably the second most frequented prayer corner within our church. An image of the sorrowful mother depicts her presence on Calvary as Jesus, the child of her womb, dies on the cross. Adjacent to the twelfth station also is an image of the Shrine to Our Mother of Sorrows between the eleventh and twelfth station at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Again at this location it is an appropriate depiction of our patroness here in this Church of Our Mother of Sorrows. The following poem, which I penned a few years ago, is dedicated to our patroness. Our Mother of Sorrows (1) There stood His mother Beside the cross of Jesus. Her mother s heart all embracing Enfolded her dying Son. (2) Her maternal heart pierced through, Becomes a sacrificial altar. In the deepest suffering sorrow, Mary lives out fully her fiat...her yes (3) Her fiat spoken to the angel - Behold the handmaid of the Lord Let it be done to me according to thy word. Now the Word is fulfilled and crucified (4) The dead mangled body taken down Is now laid in her priestly arms Against the broken altar of her heart. You are now the Mother of Sorrows (5) Belonging not only to the fruit of your womb, But to all brothers and sisters bequeathed by your Son. Our Mother of Sorrows you, too, are our treasure Our Mother, Through the last will and testament of your Son. Our Mother of Sorrows Prayer: Lord Jesus, as members of this community of faith under the patronage of Our Mother of Sorrows, we thank You for the gift of Your last will and testament on the cross. We thank You for bestowing Your mother to us, and bestowing us to Your mother. Bless us with the gift of fidelity as we contemplate her journey with You from the womb to the tomb. Enrich us in our prayerful contemplation of the Seven Stations of her great sorrows. Open our hearts to the gifts of her heart - the gifts of a listening heart, contemplation, loving compassion, faithfulness, peace and humility. Our Mother of Sorrows, pray for us. Amen. PARISH STAFF/SCHOOL FACULTY RETREAT NEXT FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH: Our parish staff and school faculty will have their annual retreat day next Friday from 8:15am to 3:15pm. Please pray God s blessings upon us as we take this day apart to rest in and with the Lord of the ministry. FIESTA 2017: Our upcoming annual Fiesta will be on the weekend of September 30 through October 2nd. The Fiesta each year is a wonderful community gathering of our parish and school and surrounding neighborhood. The primary focus of this annual event is indeed community, fellowship and friendship sharing. The income from the Fiesta is a blessing in helping some maintenance needs within the parish each year. The income from this year s Fiesta is being designated towards needed attention to flooring underneath the pews in the church and also attention to the pews, which are 59 years old - as old as the parish. The loving service of almost 300 volunteers becomes the life-blood of our parish Fiesta. All parishioners are invited to consider sharing some loving service hours in any of the many areas of service through the Fiesta weekend.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR VICTIMS OF HURRICANE HARVEY: 2 Dear Pastors and Pastoral Administrators, As we are all aware, Hurricane Harvey has caused terrible hardship and suffering to the people of Texas. On behalf of our brothers and sisters who are experiencing catastrophic and devastating suffering, I invite you to consider taking up an emergency collection on the weekend of September 16-17, 2017. The collection funds will support the humanitarian efforts of Catholic Charities USA through which support to Catholic dioceses impacted will be provided. As we witness the devastation the hurricane is bringing, we may feel helpless, but our support in prayer and sharing of material resources will help to heal and restore hope to the thousands of victims. Thank you for your compassionate response to this request for our brothers and sisters in need. Sincerely yours in Christ, +Most Rev. Gerald F. Kicanas, D.D. Bishop of Tucson Christian Education / Formation Scripture Reflection September 10, 2017-23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Matthew 18:15-20 Jesus Counsels Christians to Talk Conflicts Through Sunday s Gospel is part of Jesus discourse on how He wants His disciples to live together. Talk it through is the nub of Jesus advice on what to do when one disciple wrongs another. In Matthew s Gospel, Jesus outlines a process that draws on a law from the Old Testament book of Deuteronomy. The law requires two or three witnesses in order for a person to make an accusation (19:15). The witnesses protect an individual from the accusations of a malicious enemy or from a leader who wants to get rid of an opponent. The Gospel process builds on this law. It requires speaking directly and honestly and listening attentively. The aim of the process is not to settle a dispute but to win over an offending community member. The process adds more and more voices to persuade him or her to change the behavior and seek reconciliation. Even the final step when a wrongdoer ignores the church appears aimed at conversion rather than punishment. Treat him as you would a Gentile or a tax collector, Jesus says. But He himself reached out to Gentiles and tax collectors rather than avoid them. We have minds to weigh what is true and consciences to weigh what is right. Sunday s Gospel suggests a negotiating process for righting wrongs in the Christian community. ***What value do you put on face-to-face conversation for clearing up a wrong or supposed wrong? What has worked for you to stop the spread of accusations on social media?
