Seek the Lost Build up the Found Transform the City through Jesus Christ March 25, 2018 Palm Sunday NOTE: In celebration of Jesus as King, and in remembrance of his triumphal entry into Jerusalem, the entire congregation will gather outside the church building, weather permitting, and move in a processional into the sanctuary waving palm branches. Parents are welcome to walk with their children; if you desire you may take children 0-3 to nursery or childcare before the processional. LITURGY OF THE PALMS Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord. Peace in heaven and glory in the highest. Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, in this week of your Passion you remind us that we may joyfully declare you as King one moment, but abandon you in the next. Humble us now by your Holy Spirit to see ourselves in those who tried, mocked and crucified you, but to also accept your abundant forgiveness and mercy delivered on the cross, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Hosanna Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Let us go forth in peace. In the name of Christ. SCRIPTURE READING Psalm 118:1; 19-29 (p. 495) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. GOSPEL READING The Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Mark. Glory to You, Lord Christ. Mark 11:1-11 (p. 823) The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to You, Lord Christ. MESSAGE Palm Sunday 10,000 Reasons Rev. Patrick Dominguez THE APOSTLES CREED (said together) I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic* Church, the Communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. * The phrase holy catholic Church in the Creed means the Church worldwide. 3
PRAYERS OF GOD S PEOPLE Father, we pray for your Church to faithfully declare the life, death and resurrection of Jesus in this city and throughout the world. Lead us to boldly proclaim you as the one true Savior, Lord and Risen King. We pray for our elected leaders, appointed by you to oversee this nation. Lead them to govern with justice and mercy, tending to the needs of all people made in your image. Father, you sent your Son to deliver good news to the poor, to cure those who were sick and to free those who were oppressed. In the same way, employ our hands to heal and strengthen those who are weighed down by poverty, sickness or oppression. Lord Jesus, you said that whoever lives and believes in you will live and will never die. Use our attitudes, words and actions to proclaim your victorious resurrection to those around us who have not yet believed in you. Gracious Lord, hear us now as we bring our needs before you. (Please add your own intercessions silently or aloud.) Almighty and eternal God, so draw our hearts to you, so guide our minds, so fill our imaginations, so control our wills, that we may be wholly yours, completely dedicated unto you; And then use us according to your will, always to your glory, and for the welfare of your people; through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Jesus says, Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near. So let us turn away from our sin and turn to Christ, confessing our sins to him. PRAYER OF CONFESSION (said together) Lord Jesus, you gave your body and poured out your blood for our forgiveness, and we admit that we have sinned against you with the actions of our hands, the thoughts of our minds and the attitudes of our hearts. We have poured out anger and jealousy, immorality and idolatry, gossip and quarreling. We come to you with sincere sorrow, and turn away from our sin. Lead us to true repentance, so that we will know you and know the power of your resurrection; through Jesus Christ, our merciful High Priest. Amen. May God the Father forgive you by the death of his Son, and strengthen you to live in the power of his Spirit all your days. Amen. 4

HOLY COMMUNION (All baptized and believing followers of our Lord Jesus Christ are invited to partake in Holy Communion regardless of denomination. It is our custom to use wine during communion. If you prefer, you may receive grape juice from the smaller chalices on the end of the serving lines. If it would not be authentic for you to receive Communion, you may remain in your seat and contemplate the prayers on the following page.) Is the Father with us? Is Christ among us? Is the Spirit here? This is our God. We are his people. Lift up your hearts. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. He is. He is. He is. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We are redeemed. We lift them up to the Lord. It is right to give him thanks and praise. Leader continues in Eucharistic Prayer Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. THE LORD S PRAYER (said together) Our Father who art in Heaven Hallowed be Thy name Thy kingdom come Thy will be done On earth as it is in heaven Give us this day our daily bread And forgive us our trespasses As we forgive those Who trespass against us And lead us not into temptation But deliver us from evil For thine is the Kingdom And the power and the glory Forever and ever Amen Unable to come forward? Please inform an usher to request that Communion be brought to you. Gluten-free wafers available upon request. 6
PRAYERS FOR THOSE NOT TAKING HOLY COMMUNION The Church of The Apostles welcomes all Christians who are willing to forsake their sin and trust in Jesus Christ for salvation, to receive Holy Communion with us by coming forward to one of the communion stations at the front. If you are not able to receive Communion, please use this time to meditate on one of the following prayers. Prayer for Those Searching for Truth. Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth and the life. Grant that I might be undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me and open me to the reality of who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing and that leads to the life you promise. Thank you. Prayer of Belief. Lord Jesus Christ, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever dared admit, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I thank you for paying my debt on the cross, taking what I deserved in order to offer me complete forgiveness. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn from my sins and receive you as my Savior and Lord. Please come into my life through the power of your Holy Spirit. Thank you. A prayer team is available to pray with you at the back of the worship area. Abide With Me 1 Abide with me; falls the eventide; The darkness deepens; Lord with me abide. When other helpers, fail and comforts flee, Help of the helpless, abide with me. 2 Thou on my head, in early youth didst smile; And, though rebellious, and perverse meanwhile, Thou hast not left me, though I oft left Thee, On to the close Lord, abide with me. 3 I need Thy presence, every passing hour. What but Thy grace, can foil the tempter's power? Who, like Thyself, my guide and stay can be? Through cloud and sunshine, abide with me. 4 I fear no foe, with Thee at hand to bless Ills have no weight, tears lose their bitterness Where is thy sting death? Where grave thy victory? I triumph still, abide with me. 5 Hold Thou Thy cross, before my closing eyes; Shine through the gloom, and point me to the skies. Heaven's morning breaks, and earth's vain shadows flee; In life, in death, Lord, abide with me. Henry Lyte Justin Smith 2007 Justin Smith Music.Used by permission. All rights reserved. 7
In Christ Alone 1 In Christ alone my hope is found, He is my light, my strength, my song; This Cornerstone, this solid Ground, Firm through the fiercest drought and storm. What heights of love, what depths of peace, When fears are stilled, when strivings cease! My Comforter, my All in All, Here in the love of Christ I stand 2 In Christ alone! who took on flesh, Fullness of God in helpless babe! This gift of love and righteousness, Scorned by the ones He came to save: Til on that cross as Jesus died, The wrath of God was satisfied For every sin on Him was laid; Here in the death of Christ I live 3 There in the ground His body lay, Light of the world by darkness slain: Then bursting forth in glorious Day Up from the grave He rose again! And as He stands in victory Sin s curse has lost its grip on me, For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ The Solid Rock 1 My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus' blood and righteousness I dare not trust the sweetest frame But wholly lean on Jesus' name On Christ the solid Rock I stand All other ground is sinking sand All other ground is sinking sand 2 When darkness veils His lovely face I rest on His unchanging grace In ev'ry high and stormy gale My anchor holds within the veil 3 His oath His covenant His blood Support me in the whelming flood When all around my soul gives way He then is all my hope and stay 4 When He shall come with trumpet sound O may I then in Him be found Dressed in His righteousness alone Faultless to stand before the throne Edward Mote William Batchelder Bradbury Public Domain 4 No guilt in life, no fear in death, This is the power of Christ in me; From life s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.
