RESPECT LIFE NEWS ~ Spiritual Adoption Program MONTHS SEVEN AND EIGHT Developing Baby April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter 9 Focus on Religious Freedom ~ From Catholics for Freedom of Religion www.cffor.org Christians Are Persecuted, Not Privileged, as Students are Taught at GWU George Washington University in Washington D.C. is hosting a training seminar to teach the perils of "Christian privilege." The event description asks, "How do Christians in the U.S. experience life in an easier way than non-christians?" "... are there places where Christians have built-in advantages over non-christians?" The learning objectives indicate the learning session will touch on "white privilege" as well. However, the many Christians who have been mocked, ostracized, sued, lost jobs, businesses, or military rank for following their Christian beliefs and conscience, could challenge the premise of this training seminar at GWU and a similar philosophy at Simmons College in Boston and other universities. Instances of prejudice and persecution against Christians has substantially increased in the U.S. and the world. "... no one would be more zealous than myself to establish barriers against the horrors of spiritual tyranny, and every species of religious persecution." George Washington Every Monday afternoon at 2:30 PM in the Blessed Mother Room, you will be inspired to know that those listed below pray the Rosary together. In addition, at the meeting, they say other prayers called the Catena which they also say every day. Besides the prayers, many good works are done by all the members. We are blessed here at St. Matthew s to have a Legion of Mary with such dedicated people. The Legion always welcomes new members. See Judy Archbold, President, if you are interested in joining. WELCOME BISHOP JOHN BARRES, AUXILIARY BISHOPS, VICARS AND MEMBERS OF THE DIOCESCAN PASTORAL COUNCIL April 15, 2018 Third Sunday of Easter 10 We are very pleased and honored to warmly welcome Bishop John Barres, the Auxiliary Bishops, Vicars and members of the Diocesan Pastoral Council. Bishop John Barres will be the Celebrant at the 9 AM Mass on Saturday, April 21 st. I expect that the Auxiliary Bishops and Father Hewes will concelebrate the Mass. Although Bishop Barres has celebrated a Mass at Saint Matthew s for the Religious Education Directors in our Diocese, this is the first time that he will be celebrating a Parish Mass. We hope that many of you will be available to pray with us that morning and attend this Mass. After the Mass, the Bishop will attend a meeting here with the Diocesan Pastoral Council. Thank you and God bless you. Sister Kay McCarthy YES ~ SENIOR REMINDERS AND UPCOMING EVENTS I hope that everyone had a wonderful Easter. The blessing of the food on Holy Saturday was a huge success. We have been celebrating this tradition here at St. Matthew for well over ten years. In the beginning, we had seven or eight baskets on the altar. This time, there were too many to count. Father Sikorski gives it his own special touch. Thank you to all who made it such a success, especially the children. Meetings are held every Thursday after the 9:00 AM Mass, except on luncheon dates. Please join us. All are welcome. Reminders April 19 ~ Luncheon at Picollo Mundo Ristorante at 12:00 PM April 26 ~ Chocolate-mold demonstration with Suzanne I m very sorry to say that the planned trip to Lancaster to see the show Jesus has been cancelled. I will try again, probably in October. Remember to pray for all those who are ill and for their loving caregivers, for all those who protect us, and for our country. God bless America. See you in church. Pat True friendships are lasting because true love is eternal. A friendship in which heart speaks the heart is a gift from God. Henri Nouwen Friendship...a union of spirits, a marriage of hearts. William Penn April 15-Third Sunday of Easter In this Sunday s Gospel, Jesus explains the meaning of the scriptures. Like the disciples, when we offer and receive forgiveness, our hearts burn because we encounter the Risen Christ within us. Have you considered answering the call to help the poor find forgiveness and healing in their life by joining the Society of St. Vincent de Paul?
