Lutheran hurch of the Resurrection Sunday, January 20, 2019 Second Sunday after Epiphany INTRODUTION The Sundays after Epiphany continue to celebrate the revelation of the glory of God to us as it was made known to the magi and to those on Jordan s banks at the baptism of Jesus today using wedding imagery. Our God rejoices over God s people as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride. By the power of the Spirit there are gifts galore for everyone. In hrist Jesus the best wine is saved for last. Taste and see. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + (Silence please for prayer and meditation) RELUDE ALL TO WORSHI Walk in the Light Voices of Faith (lease stand as you are able) ONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS Blessed be the holy Trinity, one God, who creates us and forms us, who redeems us and calls us, who unites us and sends us. Amen Gathered in God s presence, let us confess our sin. Silence is kept for reflection. Mighty and loving God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We seek our own way. We divide the body of hrist. In your mercy, cleanse us and heal us. Let the words of our mouths, the thoughts of our hearts, and everything that we do be filled with faith, hope, and love. Hear the voice of Jesus: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me to proclaim release to the captives. In the name of Jesus hrist, I proclaim to you that your sins are forgiven and you are released. The joy of the Lord is your strength, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit are yours forever. Amen. 1

SALUTATION A The Lord be with you. And also with you. RAYER OF THE DAY A Lord God, source of every blessing, you showed forth your glory and led many to faith by the works of your Son, who brought gladness and salvation to his people. Transform us by the Spirit of his love, that we may find our life together in him, Jesus hrist, our Savior and Lord. Amen. (lease be seated) SHARED MINISTRY REMINDERS FIRST READING Isaiah 62:1-5 A A A reading from Isaiah 1 For Zion s sake I will not keep silent, and for Jerusalem s sake I will not rest, until her vindication shines out like the dawn, and her salvation like a burning torch. 2 The nations shall see your vindication, and all the kings your glory; and you shall be called by a new name that the mouth of the LORD will give. 3 You shall be a crown of beauty in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of your God. 4 You shall no more be termed Forsaken, and your land shall no more be termed Desolate; but you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married; for the LORD delights in you, and your land shall be married. 5 For as a young man marries a young woman, so shall your builder marry you, and as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride, so shall your God rejoice over you. Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God. SEIAL MUSI (11:00) Shine, Jesus, Shine hancel hoir 5

SEOND READING 1 orinthians 12:1-11 A A reading from 1 orinthians 1 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says Let Jesus be cursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except by the Holy Spirit. 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses. A Word of God, Word of Life Thanks be to God. (lease stand as you are able) GOSEL ALAMATION THE GOSEL John 2:1-11 The Holy Gospel according to John Glory to you, O Lord. 1 On the third day there was a wedding in ana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine. 4 And Jesus said to her, Woman, what concern is that to you and to me? My hour has not yet come. 5 His mother 6

said to the servants, Do whatever he tells you. 6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, Fill the jars with water. And they filled them up to the brim. 8 He said to them, Now draw some out, and take it to the chief steward. So they took it. 9 When the steward tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the steward called the bridegroom 10 and said to him, Everyone serves the good wine first, and then the inferior wine after the guests have become drunk. But you have kept the good wine until now. 11 Jesus did this, the first of his signs, in ana of Galilee, and revealed his glory; and his disciples believed in him. A The Gospel of the Lord. Thanks be to God. (lease be seated) SERMON astor Bruce Hannem (lease stand as you are able) 7

AOSTLES REED A Let us profess our faith in the words of the Apostles reed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus hrist, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under ontius ilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. RAYERS OF INTERESSION (After each petition concludes with Lord, in your mercy, the congregation responds, hear our prayer.) EAE A The peace of the Lord be with you always. And also with you. A I invite you to share the eace of hrist with one another. (lease be seated) GIFTS OF OFFERING (lease sign the red welcome roster and pass it on as a ritual of friendship. Then pass it back noting the names of those you re worshiping with today.) This, this is hrist the king, the sun come down from heaven. Oh, see and hear and sing! The Word of God is given! 9

OFFERING RAYER God of all creation, all you have made is good, and your love endures forever. You bring forth bread from the earth and fruit from the vine. Nourish us with these gifts, that we might be for the world signs of your gracious presence in Jesus hrist, our Savior and Lord. Amen. THE GREAT THANKSGIVING It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus hrist; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: ONGREGATONAL SONG Holy, Holy, Holy 10

EUHARISTI RAYER Holy One, the beginning and the end, the giver of life: Blessed are you for the birth of creation. Blessed are you in the darkness and in the light. Blessed are you for your promise to your people. Blessed are you in the prophets hopes and dreams. Blessed are you for Mary s openness to your will. Blessed are you for your Son Jesus, the Word made flesh. In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Let us proclaim the mystery of faith: With this bread and cup we remember your Word dwelling among us, full of grace and truth. We remember our new birth in his death and resurrection. We look with hope for his coming. ome, Lord Jesus. Holy God, we long for your Spirit. ome among us. Bless this meal. May your Word take flesh in us. Awaken your people. Fill us with your light. Bring the gift of peace on earth. ome, Holy Spirit. All praise and glory are yours, Holy One of Israel, Word of God incarnate, ower of the Most High, one God, now and forever. 11

Lord, remember us in your Kingdom and teach us to pray: LORD'S RAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen INVITATION TO OMMUNION ome to the table. Feast on God s abundant life for you. (lease be seated) 12

But ask a foster child on a cold winter s night, and they may respond that happiness is having warm, new pajamas. You can bring that bit of happiness to local foster children by bringing in new pajamas during the month of January, and leaving in the Helping Hands basket in the Narthex. The pajamas will be distributed to local agencies serving foster youth. Help bring that feeling of comfort and love to children who often don t feel loved. ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ NOTES ON TODAY S SRITURES: Isaiah 62:1-5 - The people s return to Judah after the exile was marred by economic and political troubles. Nevertheless, the prophet declares, Jerusalem and Judah will be restored. God will rejoice over Jerusalem as a bridegroom rejoices over his bride; and the people are called to the celebration. 1 orinthians 12:1-11 - The congregation at orinth experienced division as people were comparing one another s spiritual gifts, thinking some to be superior to others. aul invites this fractured community to trust that God s Holy Spirit has gifted them all perfectly for their mission together. John 2:1-11 - Turning water to wine at the wedding at ana is described as the first of Jesus signs. Through many such epiphanies, Jesus reveals that he bears God s creative power and joyful presence into the world. 17

OMMEMORATIONS FOR THE WEEK: Agnes, martyr, died around 304 Monday, January 21, 2019 Agnes was a girl of about thirteen living in Rome. The details of her martyrdom are not clear, but she gave witness to her faith and was put to death as a result, most likely by the sword. The church has honored her as one of the chief martyrs of her time. onversion of aul Friday, January 25, 2019 The week of prayer begun by the remembrance of eter's confession now comes to an end as we recall the pivotal moment in the life of the other pillar of the early church, the apostle aul. His encounter with the risen hrist turned him from persecutor of the followers of hrist to one of their leaders. Timothy, Titus, and Silas, missionaries Saturday, January 26, 2019 These three early hristian men were missionary companions of the apostle aul. Timothy became bishop of Ephesus, Titus bishop of rete, and Silas was imprisoned with aul at hilippi until they were delivered by an earthquake. 19
