President s Corner December is a month of multicultural celebrations, the most well-known among them being Christmas Day (Christian), Hanukkah (Jewish), Kwanzaa (African American), Fiesta of Our Lady of Guadalupe (Mexican), St. Lucia Day (Swedish), and Boxing Day (Australian, Canadian, English, Irish). However you celebrate the holidays, this time of year brings social gatherings with family, friends and co-workers, good food and well wishes for a New Year. Alene Bentley Doing good works in our neighborhoods and communities is another hallmark of the holiday season. Rotarians make service above self a year-round practice by donating time and money to improve lives here and around the world regardless of the calendar. But there are additional opportunities during the holidays to make a difference here at home. Please join your fellow Rotarians in a variety of service projects this holiday season: We need your help collecting gifts for Sub for Santa at Franklin Elementary, ringing bells for Salvation Army, offering transportation for at-risk youth to attend the Utah Symphony s annual Here Comes Santa Claus concert. District grants were delayed this year, so delivery of dictionaries to elementary schools is behind schedule. We need your help. Additional tutors are also needed for Franklin School students. Announcements with more details about how you can help will be made during upcoming meetings. Finally, you won t want to miss the Rotary holiday party on December 11, 2018, in the Founders Room at the top of the Zions Bank Building. Make sure to RSVP to Pam March or Gretta Spendlove if you haven t already added your name to the list. There s no charge for members and only $50 per guest. Acts of Kindness Monthly Report Both of the grant applications to the Acts of Kindness Committee this month involved health care and associated costs. In one, a young mother needed to take time off from her job to be with her son while he had surgery. She put money aside to cover expenses. Unfortunately, her apartment suffered an infestation from the neighbor. The money that was set aside for rent had to be used to provide a safe environment for her children. Luckily, she was able to come to Rotary for help with this problem and her family is able to maintain their home The second applicant has a job but his salary is low and there are no health insurance benefits. He needs surgery. Because of his low income he qualifies for reduced cost health care. Acts of Kindness was able to pay the fee and this father can have the procedure he needs. Thanksgiving is a time to reflect on the blessings in our lives. Rotarians can also give thanks that we are able to reduce suffering and trauma around the world and at home. Thank you, The Acts of Kindness Committee Wanted: You for Child s Play The Youth Services Committee is looking for volunteers for their YWCA Domestic Violence Center preschool play group on December 5th from 10:45 a.m. until noon. Rotarians provide one-on-one play time with preschool age children who are being cared for at the YWCA's Domestic Violence Shelter. This is a great opportunity to serve others with a small time commitment. The Committee is looking for 8-10 volunteers. These children love the interaction with positive, adult role models. Rest assured, you will have a great time playing with these very young children. Plan on meeting at the YWCA's Green Johnson lobby on 322 East 300 South at 10:45 a.m.. We will be escorted to the preschool for an hour of play. In addition Rotary will present a $1000.00 donation to the YWCA Domestic Violence Shelter. Santa Needs YOU! By Jim Schwing We are still looking for Club 24 Rotarians for Sub for Santa. While we currently have ten volunteers, Franklin Elementary can provide as many needy families as we can provide Santa Subs. Here is how the program works: Franklin identifies the families and has them complete a form with family details: ages, clothing sizes, favorite colors, desired toys, favorite foods and if the family is in need of food for their Christmas dinner. They also provide phone contact information and their address, Then the Santa Subs contact the parents to verify the information. The Subs purchase the gifts and any needed food and deliver the goodies to the families at the agreed-upon date and time. Since some of the children may still believe in Santa the families might decide to have the gifts delivered at a time when the children are not home. Last year, our Chair, Jim Schwing, met his family on a Saturday afternoon in front of Franklin School to deliver the gifts. For a family with 2 to 3 children and two parents, we spend between $500 and $600. If you are interested in helping but are unable to adopt a family, you may donate money. Make your check to the SL Rotary Club and give the check to the office or you may ask to have a donation added to your monthly invoice. Donations are used to help our Santa Subs with the cost of the gifts and / or food. Any money not used is donated to the SL School District Foundation and is earmarked to Franklin School for needy families. Welcome great new Rotarian Welcome Awesome New Rotarian Austin Duke I am originally from Mesa, AZ, and will probably never get used to the cold and snow we receive in Utah. I have been married to my wife Jennifer for over 13 years, and we have 5 kids: Brielle (12), Jonathan (10), Adam (8), Joey (7), and Hallie (5). My wife is from American Fork, and that is where we currently live. I completed a bachelor's degree in exercise science at BYU thinking I would pursue a career in physical therapy, but decided my true passion was helping people with their financial health. I obtained a master's degree in finance from the University of Utah and hold the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. I have been with Edward Jones for a year, and they recently asked me to serve in the downtown Salt Lake office. I can't think of a better way to serve my clients and the community than here with Rotary, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to work in Salt Lake and associate with such amazing people. 9
Serving Dinner for Homeless Teens By Mark McCashland On November 11th, Rotarians served turkey, potatoes, green beans, Pie and ice cream to the VOA youth. Rotarians estimated there were 50 meals served. Large portions were provided to all participants as they Went through the line. One recipient said, "This is the best gravy I've had In ten years, but don't tell my mom." Rotarians who participated where Mark McCashland, John Ashby, and Ross Youngberg, who were also supported by their wives. Other Rotarians who participated were Joshua Creer, Mike Gregory and two colleagues of Mark's - Lynn Erekson and Richard Hair, who helped peel potatoes before they had to leave. Mark also presented a check for $1,000 to Cathleen Sparrow, Chief Development Officer for VOA. She was appreciative and said these funds would be used to help keep the lights on and pay for the heat. Alexis Brown Brotherton also joined Cathleen during the check presentation. Thanks for all those who planned and participated in this event. This year, give the gift of dictionaries By Nancy Brown The District Grants were awarded late this year, and we have finally received our district grant to order dictionaries for all third grade students in the Salt Lake City school district. Because school started some time ago, we need to move quickly to get all of the dictionaries delivered before the holidays! Won t you please visit just one school and give the gift of a dictionary this holiday season? Contact Dan Deisley danielhdeisley@gmail.com or Nancy Brown nbrown@westminstercollege.edu to sign up for a school. Pick up books at Felt Lighting, 1220 East 3300 South. Spend a few minutes with third graders and tell them about the importance of literacy. Encourage them to share the book with their family at home. Tell them that Rotary cares about their future.
