Emmanuel Lutheran Church Hymns of Faith REFORMATION SUNDAY October 29, 2017 11:15 a.m. Emmanuel Lutheran Church 4865 Wilmington Pike; Kettering, OH 45440 (937) 434-1798; www.emmanuellc.org
Classic Grace Service REFORMATION SUNDAY Thank you for honoring God with your presence this morning. Please be sure to complete the Connection Card and then place it in the offering plate mid-way in the service. If you were not given a bulletin or you do not have a connection card inserted into your bulletin, please use one of the connection cards placed in the pew rack. Visitors: We are especially delighted that you are here today and we hope that your worship with us will be a blessing to you. The congregation is asked to speak or sing those parts of the service in bold print. A Note about Communion: We believe that in Communion when we receive the bread and wine we actually receive the Lord's Body and Blood for the forgiveness of sins and strength to serve God. If you are a baptized and repentant Christian who desires to commune with us, we believe you are publically declaring your oneness in faith with us, and you too recognize the Lord's Body and Blood are being received with the bread and wine. If you have any questions, speak with a pastor or lay minister. An usher will gladly direct you. Only those children who have been instructed in Holy Communion should commune. If you desire to commune regularly with the congregation, please make an appointment with one of the pastors. Our help is in the Name of the Lord, C who made heaven and earth. P I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord, C and You forgave the iniquity of my sin. Silence for reflection on God's Word and for self-examination. CONFESSION OF SINS LSB 184 P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.
ABSOLUTION LSB 185 P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. SALUTATION AND COLLECT OF THE DAY
P Almighty and gracious Lord, pour out Your Holy Spirit on Your faithful people. Keep us steadfast in Your grace and truth, protect and deliver us in times of temptation, defend us against all enemies, and grant to Your Church Your saving peace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Please be seated. OLD TESTAMENT Revelation 14:6-7 NIV Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to proclaim to those who live on the earth--to every nation, tribe, language and people. He said in a loud voice, "Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the sea and the springs of water. R This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. SPECIAL MUSIC In Christ Along Worship Choir By Mark Hayes Magdalena Greenewald, Director Aaron Mood, Accompanist EPISTLE Romans 3:19-28 NIV Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus. Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On that of observing the law? No, but on that of faith. For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from observing the law. R This is the Word of the Lord.
C Thanks be to God. CHILDREN S HYMN Jesus Loves Me, This I Know (The stanza is sung as children age 3 to grade 5 move to the altar area.) Jesus loves me, this I know, For the Bible tells me so. Little ones to Him belong; They are weak, but He is strong Yes, Jesus loves me, Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me, The Bible tells me so. CHILDREN S MESSAGE Jeremiah and God s New Covenant Chris Schonsheck Please stand. ALLELUIA (The Alleluia is sung as children return to their seats.) LSB 190. HOLY GOSPEL John 8:31-36 L The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter. C Glory to You, O Lord. To the Jews who had believed him, Jesus said, "If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free." They answered him, "We are Abraham's descendants and have never been slaves of anyone. How can you say that we shall be set free?" Jesus replied, "I tell you the truth, everyone who sins is a slave to sin. Now a slave has no permanent place in the family, but a son belongs to it forever. So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. L This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Please be seated. THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in
the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen! HYMN OF THE DAY Praise To The Lord, The Almighty (LSB 790, vv. 1,2,4,5) Please be seated. MISSIONAL MOMENT 5 Praise to the Lord! O let all that is in me adore Him!
