A Message from: Sister Mary Alyce September January 13, 16, 2019 2018 By now many of the Christmas decorations of the past months have been put away for next year. But actually, the Christmas season does not end until this Sunday, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. In the liturgy we move from the baby Jesus to the 30 year old Jesus in one week! Today we hear the Gospel of Jesus Baptism by John the Baptist at which time John announces that there is one coming after him who is much greater than he and then the appearance of the Holy Trinity in the ethereal voice of God the Father, the physical appearance of the Dove and the human presence of Jesus. The Triune God Presence at one time! How awesome this event must have been for the apostles and the people on the shore of the Jordan River, just as it for us, who recall its solemnity 2000 years later! At our own Baptism we received this same Trinity in the sign of the water that was poured on us. How often do we think about this Divine Relationship that we share with the three persons of the Trinity? So as not to take it for granted, this year at the Easter Vigil we will witness and affirm two women who will be received into the Church through the reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. They have been faithfully attending formation classes at Saint Charles Church since September. In March all of us will have an opportunity to witness their commitment as they present themselves for the rituals leading up to the Easter Vigil. Let us continue to keep Julianna Bresko and Dawn Estate and their sponsors, John Stanchin, Jr. and Kimberly Barrett in our prayers. Unfortunately, due to work and formation scheduling conflicts, they are not able to attend mass here at Saint Luke. However, they will be at Saint Luke on a few Sundays in March as they take the final steps toward their full initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil. The Evangelization Committee of Saint Luke Parish is hosting several opportunities for parishioners and friends to Journey to Jesus during Lent. The opportunity is designed for all of us to grow in our sense of having personally encountered Jesus, to know His love and to respond to him as a disciple. Journey consists of six weekly gatherings to be held from mid-february and continue until completed before Holy Week. Each session is about 60-90 minutes in length and consists of Scripture, a short video and an opportunity for sharing our everyday experiences in order to help each other see deeper dimensions of how Jesus and engages in our life. These sessions are not classes but rather times to reflect and pray and gather for hospitality. The committee is offering the program at different times during the week to accommodate individual schedules. Each group will be limited to between 5-10 participants. Although it may be less than 90 minutes, these may well be the most important minutes of your week. The Evangelization Committee members participated in the sessions during the fall; another group of women will be completing Journey in a week or two. The program comes highly recommended. Evangelization Committee members will be available during Coffee and Donuts next weekend to answer questions. Please prayerfully consider making this 6 week commitment. More information will be in the bulletin in the coming weeks. This website may be helpful in explaining The Journey more fully. www.pemdc.org/programs/thejourney/ It was brought to my attention that some parishioners are not aware of the fact that we have a Handicap accessible restroom in the church and that it accessible to men and women. It is located between the Men and Ladies Restrooms in the hallway. The fixtures (toilet, sink, paper towel dispenser) in this restroom meet ADA requirements. It is always open. Until next time..sister Mary Alyce LITURGICAL MINISTERS are reminded to please check your name off on the white board across from the water fountain in the narthex. READERS: Did you know you can find the readings at: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings Simply click on the proper date on the calendar located at the right of the page. DID YOU KNOW??? The best way to make your contribution to the 20/20 vision campaign is through appreciated stock. If you own stock that has gone up in value, you can transfer the shares to Saint Luke. The market value of the stock will count towards your pledge without paying any capital gains tax. If you would like additional information on how to save on taxes and meet your pledge obligation please call Wells Fargo Advisors at 330-702-2142 and ask for Don Rodenbaugh or Randy Swartz. (Parishioners of Saint Luke). LUKE S LUCKY LOTTO: As you know the parish has discontinued the Luke s Lucky Lotto, however we thank those who loyally supported this fundraiser over the years. Last year 190 tickets were sold. Total winnings paid out were $2,200.00. A $50 winner generously donated his winnings back to the parish. The profit for our final year of Luke's Lucky Lotto was $1,650. 2018 Contribution Statements are available upon request. Please call Lisa at the parish office if you need your statement. Please give 48 hour notice. No totals will be given over the phone. Statements may not be picked up at the door without prior request. CHANGE OF ADDRESS: It is important to notify the parish if you have moved or left the parish. Each time a packet of contribution envelopes is returned to the parish office by the postal service the church incurs a $1.24 expense. You may call the parish office or email any household status changes to saintlukes@zoominternet.net. IF YOU ARE ENTERING AN ASSISTED LIVING FACILITY OR NURSING HOME or know of a parishioner who entered either, please call the parish office. We will gladly share your name with our deacons who attempt to visit regularly. SAINT LUKE BOCCE LEAGUE will meet at Steamers on Tuesday January 15th at 6:00p.m. Please RSVP Bill Schiraldi 330-726-6079. If you are interested in Bocce and would like to join the league you are invited to attend. All are welcome. REMEMBER PARISH IN YOUR WILL: Only you can divide your property as you wish it be divided. A bequest to your church can be a living memorial to the legacy of your life. A bequest to your church is exempt from estate and inheritance taxes and reduces the amount of the estate to be taxed. Your personal attorney will be happy to assist you if asked. TREE OF LIFE is a wonderful way to remember a loved one, honor a special person, or commemorate a special life event. Call Lisa at the Parish Office to purchase a leaf. The Tree of Life was recently relocated between the doors entering the worship space. Overhead lighting enhances its beauty.

A Message from: Fr. Keehner I was in the process of writing thank you notes for the gifts and cards I received in celebration of my anniversary when I ended up in the hospital. As a result, and with Christmas and the many get well cards I received over the last seven weeks, I have fallen so far behind in everything that I am finding the writing of these cards to be next to impossible at this time. Please know, however, that this does not mean that I appreciate your many gifts, cards, and prayers any less. I am touched that so many of you reached out to me during my illness and that you continue to keep me in your prayers as I continue to recover my strength. Please know that St. Luke parish is a great blessing in my life and that I am truly grateful to each and every one of you. May God bless you. Peace, Fr. John Keehner STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT: Baptism of the Lord John answered them all, I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit... (Luke 3:16) The Catholic Catechism states that Jesus immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God s will. In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give to Jesus the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God. VOCATIONS: Here is my servant whom I uphold, my chosen one with whom I am pleased, Because God finds each of us special he invites us as his servants to follow his unique path for our lives. God is pleased when we follow his will, especially if that is to serve in the religious life, as a deacon or as a priest. Call Fr. Christopher Luoni (330) 744-8451, or by email: cluoni@youngstowndiocese.org. That, like John the Baptist, all those called by the Lord to serve his church will accept his invitation, we pray to the Lord. Something to think about this week Every time you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing. Mother Teresa A Family Perspective by Bud Ozar In today s gospel Jesus was publicly AFFIRMED by his Father: You are my beloved son, with you I am very pleased. As parents we can become so focused on misbehaviors we overlook the good behaviors. Jesus needed AFFIRMATION and so do our children. White Mass for all Health Professionals Including Mental Health Workers: The Annual White Mass celebrating and recognizing the ministry and work of those in the health professions will be held on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 10:30am at the Cathedral of St. Columba located at 154 W. Wood St. in Youngstown. Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., will preside. A reception will follow in the Cathedral Hall provided by Café Augustine: donations accepted. All are welcome. For more information call 330-744-8451 ext.272 or contact dschmidt@youngstowndiocese.org. January is designated as Right to Life month, stemming from the 1973 Supreme Court Roe vs. Wade decision, which legalized abortion. Although we often ascribe the Right to Life only to innocent unborn children, right to life includes all forms of life: the unborn, the elderly, persons with disabilities, those who are incarcerated, capital punishment, assisted suicide and euthanasia, to name a few. All life is sacred, from conception to natural death. In 1983, the late Cardinal Joseph Bernardin of Chicago wrote an eloquent document on a consistent Ethic of Life entitled The Seamless Garment, in which he emphasized that all life issues are intertwined, and all of them deserve reflection and action. Since 1983, those original moral issues have been expanded to include solidarity with the poor, the economy, military spending, immigration and more. The diocese is celebrating a Mass for Life next Sunday, January 20 at 4:00 p.m. at St. Columba Cathedral. All are welcome to attend this mass. WORLD DAY OF CONSECRATED LIFE: Sunday, February 3rd at 10:30am at St. Columba Cathedral. The universal Church has been celebrating World Day of Consecrated Life since 1997. Bishop George Murry, S.J. Invites our diocesan Church to celebrate the gift of Consecrated life with him and the religious of our diocese. PLEASE REMEMBER TO SILENCE YOUR PHONE RINGER WHEN ENTERING THE WORSHIP SPACE.

Parish Mission Statement We are members of Saint Luke Parish, a Roman Catholic Christian Community of Faith within the Diocese of Youngstown. We are deeply rooted in both Scripture and Tradition. Born in Baptism and sustained by the celebration of the Eucharist, we embrace our life in Christ through prayer and sacrament, service and outreach, proclamation of the Word and formation in faith. Guided by the Holy Spirit and motivated by our love of God and of all people, we are both sign and an instrument of the Kingdom of Promise. Our unique blessing and gift is that we are a parish family which creates a warm and welcoming worship environment and participates fully in the planning and celebration of the Liturgy.
