10:45 Orders of Worship November 29, 2015 (See a separate bulletin for 6:30 & 8:30) Advent is about the coming days. God s people have always lived in great expectation, but that expectation finds specific, repeated enunciation in the texts appointed for these four weeks. The ancients anticipated a righteous Branch to spring up for David. The Thessalonians awaited the coming of our Lord Jesus with all the saints. Our Lord s contemporaries hoped for the time to stand before the Son of Man. With them we eagerly await the coming days: another Christmas celebration, a second coming, and the advent of our Lord in word and supper. SUNDAY MORNING 10:45 COMMUNION November 29, 2015 - First Sunday of Advent In the Sanctuary This BULLETIN contains the worship order and the red Evangelical Lutheran Worship in the pew racks contains liturgy in the front and hymns, listed in bold numbers, in the back. PAGES 91-93 provide interesting background information on the pattern of our worship. LARGE PRINT BULLETINS of this service are available from the ushers. Our Advent services center around three hymns found in the Gospel of Luke. Today s worship features the Song of Zechariah, The Benedictus, found in Luke 1:67-69. + + + GATHERING + + + The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God. GATHERING MUSIC When He Cometh - arr. Gordon Young Mark Koehler, organ WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS *GATHERING SONG *Please stand, as able. Hark, the Glad Sound Please turn and face the processional cross in the center aisle as it passes. 1. Hark the glad sound! The Savior comes, the Savior promised long; Let ev ry heart prepare a throne and ev ry voice a song. 2. The Lord fulfills his promises, his cov nant sworn of old, To send a Savior, David s Son, as prophets long foretold. 3. Blest be the God of Israel, who comes with us to dwell. Repent of sin, prepare the way for our Emmanuel. 4. All glory to the Father give, with glory to the Son, And glory to the Spirit sing, th eternal Three in One! *GREETING +The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. 3

*CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION With one voice we join Zechariah s song of praise: Through his holy prophets he promised of old that he would save us from our enemies, from the hands of all who hate us. He promised to show mercy to our fathers and to remember his holy covenant. Zechariah s son, John the Baptist, would fulfill his ministry. He would call the people of his day and of our day to recognize our sinfulness. In our day, we often use these words: Almighty God, we confess to you all of the sins by which we have offended you. We deserve to suffer for our sins, both now and in eternity. We are sorry for our sins. We pray that you will look on us in mercy and forgive us for the sake of Jesus my Savior, who suffered the punishment for our sins when he died on the cross. Zechariah s son pointed to Jesus, the Lamb of God who came to take our sins away. God has had mercy on you. He gave his Son to die for you and for Jesus sake forgives all of your sins. I announce to you that your sins are forgiven in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. In the tender compassion of our God, the dawn from on high shall break upon us to shine on those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death and to guide our feet into the way of peace. Please be seated 4

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH / CANTICLE OF LIGHT Prayer by Candlelight - Martin Kral (2010) Cantor sings Refrain first time, then All repeat (After Refrain, as music continues underneath) Cantor sings Stanza 1, then All repeat Refrain 1. Oh, how it flickers reminding me how You came to bring light to brighten my days. And oh, how the wax melts reminding me how my sins will be melted away. Refrain LITANY 6:30 Jim & Sue Norris 8:30 Rene & Sarah Paddags, Emma, William, Elizabeth 10:45 Jim & Deb Powell, Jenny LEADER: O God, we love Zechariah s melody of repentance CONGREGATION: your vision of what his son s message will be. O Lord, loose our tongues so we may ask what we must do. O Lord, we with one voice join Zechariah s song of praise: Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; he has come to his people and redeemed them. He has raised up for us a mighty Savior, born of the house of his servant David. 5

LEADER: (as one candle is lit) We praise you, O God, for this evergreen crown that marks our days of preparation for Christ's advent. As we light the first candle on this wreath, rouse us from sleep, that we may be ready to greet our Lord when he comes with all the saints and angels. Enlighten us with your grace, and prepare our hearts to welcome him with joy. Grant this through Christ our Lord, whose coming is certain and whose day draws near. Amen Cantor sings Stanza 2, then All repeat Refrain 2. Oh, how the flame burns reminding me how Your free gift of love can warm me inside. And oh, how the smoke climbs reminding me how My prayers are lifted up high. Refrain PASTOR: Stir up your power, Lord Christ, and come. By your merciful protection alert us to the threatening dangers of our sins, and redeem us for your life of justice, for you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen + + + WORD + + + God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching and song. FIRST READING Jeremiah 33:14-16 Pew Bible, OT pg. 821 14 The days are surely coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. 15 In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 16 In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will live in safety. And this is the name by which it will be called: The LORD is our righteousness. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SECOND READING 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 Pew Bible, NT pg. 218 9 How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? 10 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. 11 Now may our God and Father himself and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. 12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. 13 And may he so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. 6

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. *GOSPEL ACCLAMATION Lord, to Whom Shall We Go? pg. 142 *GOSPEL Luke 1:67-79 Pew Bible, NT pg. 59 The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. 67 Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke this prophecy: 68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has looked favorably on his people and redeemed them. 69 He has raised up a mighty savior for us in the house of his servant David, 70 as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, 71 that we would be saved from our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. 72 Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors, and has remembered his holy covenant, 73 the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham, to grant us 74 that we, being rescued from the hands of our enemies, might serve him without fear, 75 in holiness and righteousness before him all our days. 76 And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways, 77 to give knowledge of salvation to his people by the forgiveness of their sins. 78 By the tender mercy of our God, the dawn from on high will break upon us, 79 to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace." The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Please be seated 7
