Father Don s Gospel Reflection The Thirty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time Mark 12:38-44 Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood. Jesus begins today s Gospel by pointing out that scribes are not who they claim to be. Jesus exposes their flaws and challenges their hypocrisy. However, Jesus hits deeper than just the warning about the scribes he challenges those listening to examine in their hearts what they are truly giving to the Lord. As Jesus sits opposite the treasury, he observes each person s giving. There are indeed people who appear to be generous, but Jesus is going to teach his disciples what genuine giving is all about. A widow comes to put in her gift. Given what others have contributed, her two small coins seem worthless in the larger scheme of things. Jesus tells his disciples the widow has given from her poverty; she gave her whole livelihood. The rest of the people gave from their surplus. While it is a gift, it is not a sacrifice because the funds might not be missed. After reflecting on this Gospel, it is humbling to hear this message this week. How often does God get my first fruits as a sign of gratitude for the many gifts he has given to me? How often am I just giving from my surplus without giving a second thought to what I am doing? Just how grateful am I that God has blessed me with so many gifts? What about you? What kind of steward are you with the gifts placed in your hands? I bet there are few of us who fit into the widow s category when it comes to showing gratitude to the Lord. We may look down on the characters in the Gospel, such as the scribes, but are we much different from them? If the answer comes quickly to you, perhaps you may want to reflect on this with prayer. Not everything is measured by money, but it is a reality and necessary part of our church family. Are we being the best stewards we can be? Have we shown our gratitude to the Lord by being generous with our treasures? For myself I try to evaluate that every year. I have felt called to increase my giving of my treasures each year in gratitude for placing me in a community that shows the spirit of Christ alive. It is up to everyone to make their own choices about using the gifts that God has placed into your hands. I believe there is so much more we can do as a faith community. We must have gratitude for what the Lord God has done for us. Embrace the widow s might and give our first fruits. Have a great week! St. John Annual Report Last week our St. John Annual Report was mailed and emailed with On Eagle s Wings. Inside the report, you will find many interesting facts about our parish including the number of sacraments received last year and volunteer hours worked. Also included in the annual report is the state of our finances. As you will see in our annual report, we had a good year in 2014-2015. We ended the year ahead of our budget. Our parishioner offerings were up last year by 2.5 percent over the year before. This year, however, we are currently 3.3 percent behind our budget even though our budget is lower than last year. If we compare our current income this year to our income at this time last year, we are 6.5 percent lower than where we were. If you are able, please give generously. It takes the entire parish to be able to keep our community vibrant. Thank you to everyone who gives. We are blessed that you are able and also choose to give! There are many other interesting facts in our report. Please take a copy with you this weekend, or look for the report online on our parish website, www.stjohnwc.org. We could not serve those in need without your generous support. If you are interested in becoming a member of this unique ministry please contact Steve Gross at 777-6433, ext.120. 8 St. Nick Toy Drive Nov. 28 & 29 In celebration of the upcoming feast of St. Nicholas, and in honor of his generous spirit, we will hold our annual Toy Drive for the Campton Mission of Appalachia. We encourage children and all parishioners to bring unwrapped new games, new toys, and various types of new balls for children ages one to 11 to the liturgies on Saturday, Nov. 28, or Sunday, Nov. 29. Place the toys in the Gathering Space before Mass begins. Sister Susan in Campton requests that the toys be unwrapped so that the parents are better able to select age-appropriate gifts for their children. Also, please do not include toy guns. Thank you for making a brighter Christmas for the parents and children in Campton, Kentucky! Holiday Turkey Dinners It doesn t seem possible, but the holidays are coming soon Thanksgiving and Christmas. Once again we are going to provide the turkey and gravy for each holiday dinner at Our Daily Bread (near Findlay Market). These dinners have been a service of our parish for about 20 years. If you wish to join with us, there are four alternatives: 1) Cook the turkey and cut all the meat off of the bones. Wrap the white and dark meat together and freeze. Save all drippings. Strain and freeze, place in a throwaway container. You can make your own gravy or someone else will make the gravy; 2) Buy a turkey and let someone else cook it for you; 3) Volunteer to cook a donated turkey; or 4) Donate a check, made payable to St. John the Evangelist Church, which will be used to purchase a turkey. Please drop off Thanksgiving turkeys by Nov. 23. If you have any further questions, call Marianne Ball at 777-6433, ext. 119. Thank you for your help. Divorced & Separated A support group for divorced and separated adults meets Monday evenings at 7:30 p.m. in the Hospitality Room. We meet weekly to share life experiences during difficult times. You do not need to walk this path alone. Give yourself a gift of time for sharing and support with others who understand. For more information, email Mary Taylor at ghm.mtaylor@gmail.com.
