From the desk of Father James This past week, we had two big celebrations in our Church. On Tuesday we celebrated the Solemnity of All Saints. For those that came to the 8:30 am Mass we had the special treat of listening to a number of our 8 th graders from our school share about the lives of a number of different saints. Each year we have this wonderful opportunity to gather and remember all the holy men and women that have gone before us that have been recognized as Saints by the Church. There are not enough days in the year for each Saint to have their own special day, but on this day we do honor them all and we recognize the light that burns brightly in their hearts for the Lord and how their yes to Jesus has helped to bring that light to all corners of the world. On Wednesday we celebrated our annual Mass of Remembrance on All Soul s Day. Each year our Church remembers the souls of all the faithful departed, especially those that have passed away and were buried from St. Francis Parish since last November 2. Their names are listed on the banner in the Inner Narthex opposite the picture display of our many family members that have passed away over the years. Our Catholic Church honors all the faithful departed during these autumn days of November and encourages us all to pray for the souls of the faithful departed. We can even make a visit to a cemetery and pray for the souls there as well. I would encourage all of you during this month to take some time each day to pray for different family members and friends that have passed away. Maybe even to light a candle for them in church or to light a candle next to their picture at home. May the Souls of ALL the Faithful Departed Rest in Peace! Be sure to like St Francis Catholic Church on Facebook! Follow St Francis Catholic Church on Pinterest. Visit stfrancissherwood.org for information on upcoming events, ministry happenings and many Catholic resources for all ages. In the Spirit of St. Francis To Yvonne Nimeh & Suzanne Beach for sharing the apples from their yard with the parish office staff and with the Holy Rollers for pie baking. To everyone who donated paper grocery bags to the food pantry; especially Chris Welters and Greg & Myra Parrott who dated 800 between them. To Judy Eklund for the beautiful flowers for the parish office. To Deacon Bill and Willie Battilega for hanging the All Souls banner in the outer narthex. To Johanna Jansen, Chris Friesen, Joyce Venjohn, Evlyn Turner and Melanie Battilega for their continued work keeping the church in order and beautiful. To Gladys Gavin for laundering the altar linens for the month of October. In the Spirit of St. Francis...THANK YOU! Envelopes are available around the church for remembering the souls of the dead during the month of November. These envelopes will be present at all Masses during the month. Stephen Ministry Extra Care Sunday! Our Stephen Ministers invite you to be extra caring today. Greet everyone you encounter with a smile. Ask them how they really are. Give them an extra hug. Find out if there s anything you can do for them. And let s make a special effort to make St. Francis Church an extra caring place not only today, but every day. http:// www.stfrancissherwood.org/stephen-ministry-care. 3

Care Ministry St. Francis visiting Eucharistic Ministers and Friendly Visitors serve not only parishioners in their homes, but also serve Catholics in assisted living centers and memory care facilities. As our ministers could tell you, residents express over and over how much joy they receive from the Eucharist, from reciting familiar prayers, and from receiving fellowship and support during the visits. Currently, our visiting Eucharistic Ministers and Friendly Visitors serve at the following assisted living centers/memory care facilities: Prestige Senior Living Riverwood in Tualatin Farmington Square Tualatin Avamere in Sherwood (Deacon Bill, Communion Service) If you have a loved one in any of these facilities, please contact Jennifer Mirek in the parish office, so we can make sure he or she is being served. If your loved one resides at a private home, please call Jennifer as well so we can serve him or her at home. "Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through the experiences of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened, vision cleared, ambition inspired and success achieved." - Helen Keller This past weekend we witnessed the character of the St. Francis community through its generosity. On auction night we took an important step toward ensuring the success of St. Francis School. There are more steps to take and they will be challenging but we will be successful. I have seen our character, I am proud of it and I am humbled by it. Thank you for supporting St. Francis School. Michael Corella Auction Chair Preliminary Auction Results: Raffle Sales: $16,853 90% of the students sold raffle tickets. Auction 201 people attended Special Appeal: $54,400 Total for auction night: $169,439 -------------------------------------------------- Total (including raffle, dinners and sponsorships): $186,292 The money raised from the Raffle extends what the students are learning in the classroom by paying for field trips throughout the year. Some of our students and teachers favorite field trips include: The Grotto, Pi Day, The Oregon Zoo, Gilbert House, Oregon Garden, Evergreen Space Museum and many more. The money raised at the auction is used for the general operating budget. It helps bridge the $1322 gap between the unsubsidized tuition cost and the actual cost of educating the students. Thank you to everyone who so generously supported St. Francis School. Did you know you may be able to double your donation! Many corporations will match your gift dollar for dollar through their Corporate Matching Gift Programs. This is an excellent way to maximize your support to the school. If you have any questions about how to double your donation please contact Sheila at 503-625-6185 or the school office. Our tax ID # 930546642. Kimberly Fadden St. Francis School Sacramental News May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen John Kent died on October 16. His funeral was on November 5. Catholic Corner What is indirect abortion? Indirect abortion is not really abortion. It occurs as a result of a procedure in which the direct intention is to treat the mother who is in danger of death from a serious pathological condition, and in which the death of the fetus is an incidental, unintended and secondary result, which would have been avoided had it been possible. Every effort must be made to baptize the fetus. St. Paul Family Catechism, 673 Next Week: What is euthanasia? Respect Life "In the American tradition, people have a right to bring their beliefs to bear on every social, economic and political problem facing their community. For Christians, that s not just a privilege. It s not just a right. It s a demand of the Gospel. Believers can t be silent in public life and be faithful to Jesus Christ at the same time. Actively witnessing to our convictions and advancing what we believe about key moral issues in public life are acts of truth telling. They re vital to the health of every democracy. And again, they re also a duty not only of our religious faith, but also of our citizenship." ~Archbishop Charles J. Chaput, Archbishop of Philadelphia, "Life Matters: Religious Liberty and the American Soul, Respect Life Program 2012 Sunday, November 6 Where All Are Welcomed and Loved With Mercy - Day 602 Children in poverty and children of color are at a disproportionate risk, with routinely higher rates of lead poisoning and asthma-related deaths and hospitalization. 6

Happening This Week: Announcements CYO will be partnering with the Knights of Columbus this Sunday to host the Pancake Breakfast. We are excited about this opportunity to help give back to our community. We will also be selling spots for a CYO Gift Wrapping Party Fundraiser event for Saturday, December 10 in the parish center. Flyers with details about this event will be handed out. This weekend, November 5 & 6, will be the Collection for Archdiocese for Military Services (AMS). The AMS relies solely on private donors in support of its mission, Serving those who serve. Envelopes can be found in the narthex and the church entrances. Parish Announcements: All are invited to a Holy Hour on the eve of the elections, Monday November 7 at 7:00 pm, being held in the church and hosted by Deacon Bill and the Respect Life Ministry. The holy hour will include Benediction and Adoration, readings, a reflection by Deacon Bill, recitation of the Rosary, Chaplet of Divine Mercy, a sung Litany, hymns and other prayers for our nation's elections. Come join us as we can lift our prayers to Our Almighty God, the Giver of All Gifts and the Great Consoler! It's that time of year again! Thanksgiving Food Boxes are here. Sign-ups for donations and information about volunteering are in the narthex now. These food boxes wouldn't be possible without your support! Stop by after Mass to see how you can help. There will be an Usher workshop after all Masses the weekend of November 12 & 13. This will give us an opportunity to refresh our skills and pray together. The Fall Pie Sale will be November 12 and 13 after all Masses. The Holy Rollers are in need of apples and berries. Volunteers are needed to help bake pies on Friday, November 11. If you would like to help, please come to the parish kitchen at 8:00 am and stay as long as you are able. Thank you! Eucharistic Minister training will be the weekend of November 19 & 20 after all the Masses. All existing Eucharistic Minister are expected to attend. St. Francis School is participating in the Al's Garden Center Poinsettia voucher sales fundraiser event! Purchase your vouchers in the school or parish office, or see any St. Francis student! Vouchers are $15 for 6.5" poinsettia and $30 for an 8.5" poinsettia. Every poinsettia ordered benefits St. Francis School! Order by Friday, November 11! Vouchers will be delivered to St. Francis on Monday, November 14 and can be redeemed at Al's Garden Center November 18 through December 5! Out of Parish: There will be a Knights of Columbus breakfast and blood pressure screening after the morning Masses this Sunday, November 6. You may have noticed that we have changed hosts for weekend Masses. They are a little smaller and physically they melt in your mouth. There are a couple of reasons for this change. One is that we have been using these hosts for years for the homebound and this will simplify us not having to keep the two different hosts separate. Secondly, since they are smaller, more hosts will fit in the ciborium so we will not have a storage problem in the tabernacle. Mark your calendars the 3rd Annual Women s Advent Brunch is on Saturday, November 19 from 9:00 am to 11:30 am. We will be sharing Advent traditions, inspiring stories, the lighting of the Advent Wreath and a delicious brunch. Please call and let us know how many women (and girls age 7 and up) will be attending. Call Yolanda McVicker at 503-290-4484, or Linda Blackwood @ 503-625-6185. Please leave a message if you don t reach us in person. We will call you back to confirm your reservation. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call Yolanda. The Serra Club of Tualatin Valley invites you to their November meeting with Reverend Jeff Eirvin, Archdiocese Vocation Director and newly elected National VP of Vocation Directors on Wednesday, November 9 starting at 7:00 pm; beginning with Liturgy of the Hours, at O Reilly Hall at St. Anthony Parish in Tigard. Come meet our members and hear more from Fr. Jeff on the Vocations plans for the Archdiocese. 7
