O Lord, you are good and forgiving, full of mercy to all who call to you. RESPONSORIAL PSALM: God, in your goodness, you have made a home for the poor. V. 1. The just shall rejoice at the presence of God, they shall exult and dance for joy. O sing to the Lord, make music to his name; rejoice in the Lord, exult at his presence. R. V. 2. Father of the orphan, defender of the widow, such is God in his holy place. God gives the lonely a home to live in; he leads the prisoners forth into freedom. R. V. 3. You poured down, O God, a generous rain: when your people were starved you gave them new life. It was there that your people found a home, prepared in your goodness, O God, for the poor. R. GOSPEL ACCLAMATION: Alleluia, alleluia! Take my yoke upon you; learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart. Alleluia! PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL: In your goodness: Lord, hear our prayer. PLEASE NOTE: On Sunday 8 September there is NO 9.00am Mass at Mary Immaculate Church From the desk of Fr Thang: Part III Good Communication (John Costa) Due to the dates of the First Holy Communion for Mary Immaculate and Mother of God Schools being on 8 Sept and 15 Sept respectively, the reflections on the parts of the Mass will be postponed one week. I would like to take this opportunity to thank John Costa for all the effort and dedication that he has shown to the Parish Website, Multimedia Liturgy, the Liturgy Group, and especially this week s reflection. May God bless you and your family. - Fr Thang. Good Communication In a memorable scene from the 1979 Monty Python film Life of Brian a multitude of people was being addressed by Brian on the side of a Mount. At the fringe some were straining to hear what Brian was saying from afar. A hard-of-hearing old man kept asking people nearby "What's he saying, what's he saying", and others nearby helpfully obliged by repeating what they had heard. After one of several message-relays the old main exclaimed in disgust "why should the Greeks inherit the earth", obviously mis-hearing the famous words attributed to Matthew 5.5 in his Sermon on the Mount The meek shall inherit the earth. This was a classic case of mis-communication, something which still regularly happens in the modern world despite public address systems, printing presses, radio and TV broadcasting, the Internet, and new social media such as Twitter. Mis-communication can occur for technical reasons or, more often than not, for reasons of understanding, context or interpretation. Election communication illustrates this challenge very well. In our Christian life and shared Catholic faith "The Word" can at times be straightforward when its words are simple, speak for themselves and are not significantly affected by interpretation or context. But that is not always the case, so the essence of communication in a Parish is to study and understand The Word and its meaning, under guidance, and then express it in ways that are readily understood and helpful in the context of the world we live in today. This is no easy task. In relation to Scripture the Liturgy Group attempts to do this at each of its weekly meetings. Once an understanding of meaning is reached then whatever means are available are used to help express it. In the Mass the Homily is the essence of this expression, together with a liturgy supported by relevant music and images that creatively enhance understanding, and sense of spirituality. Multimedia is now used at our Masses to assist in this regard, together with the Parish Newsletter and Website, all working together. These media are intended not only to help clearly express "The Word" but in a practical parish context to continually remind us of and reflect our parish values of Inclusiveness, Hospitality, Service and Mission. Just as important they are there also to help reinforce the fact that whilst we are three communities we are a single Parish, the Catholic Parish of Ivanhoe, members of a single Catholic Church, and part of a world community of brothers and sisters. All of this communication is there to further stimulate our individual thinking and learning on faith issues. Good communication can only exist when it is two-sided. Not simply a case of Brian preaching to the multitudes but of people speaking to each other about what 'Brian' is saying. It is using our God-given intelligence and judgement to continually learn about and respond to the Word of God as presented to us through the Gospels. In practical modern ways it is to assist us to fully relate in a Christian way to each other as a local community and the wider world in which we live, complete with their many challenges. As the world evolves so too should we exploit communication technology to help us along our spiritual journeys. Throughout history the Church has often been at the forefront of communication, even with recent Popes using SMS and twitter messaging. Increasingly now interactive communication should facilitate growing lay participation in the church, as already happens in Ivanhoe Parish. In the face of change it is time now for all the People of God collectively to communicate with each other more than in the past about our shared faith and many challenges as a Catholic Church in the wider world. - John Costa. Envelopes are also available. Retired priests are very grateful for your ongoing support both now and in the future. Most priests have served at least 50 years in parish ministry before retiring. - The custom of priests retiring is relatively new in Melbourne. - The Priests Retirement Foundation was established in 1990 by Archbishop Little. - Priests are not employees of the Archdiocese or the Parish, and are thus ineligible for superannuation. - Priests provide contributions for their retirement to the Foundation during their parish ministry. Although priests generally retire at 75 years of age (according to Canon Law), there are 13 priests over 75 years and 65 priests aged 65 75 who are still working in active service in Melbourne parishes. There are 89 Melbourne priests currently retired: 4 in their 90 s, 41 in their 80 s, 23 aged 75-80, 18 aged 66-75 years, and 3 priests under 65 years who have retired due to ill-health. There will be an average of 6 retirements per year for the next six years. Please consider giving generously for the many retired or sick priests that have served us well over many years. Donations of $2 or more are tax deductible. Receipts for gifts of $5 or more are issued end of July 2014
