FIRST WEEKEND AFTER EPIPHANY January 13, 2019 Theme of the Day: This weekend we begin a new sermon series on Christ s Beatitudes in Matthew 5:3 12. First up? Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. PRESERVICE MUSIC 10:45a ESM Seventh Grade Students WELCOME INVOCATION AND CALL TO WORSHIP (W=Women, M=Men) P: In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. All: Amen. P: Blessed are the poor in spirit W: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven. P: Blessed are those who mourn M: For they will be comforted. P: Blessed are the meek All: For they will inherit the earth. P: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness W: For they will be filled. P: Blessed are the merciful M: For they will be shown mercy. P: Blessed are the pure in heart W: For they will see God. P: Blessed are the peacemakers M: For they will be called children of God. P: Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness All: For theirs is the kingdom of heaven! HYMN Blessed Are They (stanzas 1 4) CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS P: Blessed Jesus, empower me to receive salvation in your shed blood, your five wounds and your loving heart. C: Though my sins rise to heaven 1

P: Your merits soar above them. C: Though unrighteousness weighs me down P: Your righteousness exalts me to your throne. C: Though all things in me call for my rejection P: All things in you plead for my acceptance. All: Jesus, I am guilty, but in your blood and righteousness I am pardoned. I am lost, but in your power I am saved. I am wandering, but by your grace found. Give me perpetual broken-heartedness. Keep me always clinging to your cross. Please silently reflect on the fact that though our sin is great, Christ s love is greater. P: Jesus says in today s Old Testament lesson, The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor; he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound; to proclaim the year of the LORD s favor. (Isaiah 61:1 2) 2019 is still the year of the LORD s favor! In Christ you are forgiven and you are free! Blessed are the poor in spirit. All: Theirs is the kingdom of God! HYMN PRAYER OF THE DAY Blessed Are They (stanza 5) P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. P: Let us pray. Heavenly Father, you oppose the proud but give grace to the humble. Create in us broken and contrite hearts so we trust these words of the Master, Blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. We pray in Jesus name. All: Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE CHILDREN S CHURCH 10:45a Led by Melanie North Children are excused following the Children s Message for supervised Children s Church in the Conference Room. They will return during the offering. 2

C: Foster in us the constant and authentic cry, God have mercy on me a sinner. + Additional Prayers + P: We pray this humbly in the name of Jesus Christ who taught us to pray LORD S PRAYER The 8:00a service concludes on page 6 with the Benediction. THE CELEBRATION OF THE LORD S SUPPER 10:45a OUR COMMUNION PRACTICE The Lord s Supper is celebrated at this congregation in the confession and glad confidence that, as he says, our Lord gives into our mouths not only bread and wine but his true body and blood to eat and to drink for the forgiveness of sins and to strengthen our union with him and with one another (Matthew 26:26-28). Our Lord invites to his table those who have been baptized, repent of all sin, and set aside any refusal to forgive and love as he forgives and loves us, that they may show forth his death until he comes (1 Corinthians 11:26). Because those who eat and drink our Lord s body and blood unworthily do so to their great harm (1 Corinthians 11:28-30) and because Holy Communion is a confession of the faith which is confessed at this altar, any who are not yet instructed, in doubt, or who hold a confession differing from that of this congregation and The Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, and yet desire to receive the sacrament, are asked first to speak with the pastor. If you need communion delivered to you, please notify an usher or elder before the service begins. 4

Gluten free communion wafers are available by raising your index finger as Christ s body is distributed, signaling the elder that you wish to receive a prewrapped gluten free wafer. The wrapping can be placed in the box at the end of the first pew with the individual cups. Individual cups, should be held until the chalice has passed. Non-alcoholic wine is available in the tinted cups. If you have some other allergy or need, please contact the church office so special arrangements can be made. Children or adults who have not yet been confirmed are invited to come forward for a blessing. As you do so please cross yourselves by placing your arms over your chest. PREFACE/PROPER PREFACE P: The Lord be with you, C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the Lord. P: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
