Page Three St. Francis of Assisi Parish August 26, 2018 Abuse Scandal Every time we celebrate the Eucharist, we proclaim the mystery of faith after the consecration; We proclaim your Death, O Lord, and profess your Resurrection until you come again. We are baptized into this profound mystery of dying and rising with Christ living this mystery is also the mystery of life. We die and rise with Christ in our personal lives as well as in our social and communal lives. The recent news regarding this abuse scandal in the Catholic Church has been painful for all of us. I believe we are in uncharted waters, and I am not sure what is ahead for us as a church. The core of our Christian faith is that there is life after death in death there comes new life! The news for me has shaken me to my core! As a priest, I am a representation of an institution that has failed miserably in its responsibility to young people and to the faithful. Church leaders deliberately chose self-preservation and institutional reputation over the protection of the most vulnerable people in their care. I am heart-sick, sad, angry, frustrated, and embarrassed to be associated with such a reality. What does the Catholic Church need? Our church needs a systematic change a reformation that will change the church to allow married priests, female deacons like we did in the early church, and most importantly lay control and authority at the highest levels of the church governance under the Pope. We as a church have to die to what has been the common practice of being church. In this dark time in our church it is a death of experience! The time is challenging us to let go to die so that something new can be born there will be new life. It will not come fast or easy, but it will come. This week in my prayer, I went to the great Italian spiritual writer, Carlo Carretto. He once wrote a little tribute to the church which captures well both its scandal and its grace. In the closing section of perhaps his most mature book, I Sought and I Found, Carretto addresses the church in these words, How much I must criticize you, my church and yet how much I love you! You have made me suffer more than anyone and yet I owe more to you than anyone. I should like to see you destroyed and yet I need your presence. You have given me much scandal and yet you alone have made me understand holiness. Never in this world have I seen anything more compromised, more false, yet never have I touched anything more pure, more generous or more beautiful. Countless times I have felt like slamming the door of my soul in your face and yet, every night, I have prayed that I might die in your arms! Then too where would I go? To build another church? But I could not build one without the same defects, for they are my defects. And again, if I were to build another church, it would be my church, not Christ s church. No. I am old enough. I know better! I find his prayer for the church to be one of hope in a challenging time, and I hope you find it a source of grace for your own prayer. Save the Dates! I Have Called You by Name Mobilizing the Family of Faith - Eucharist Must be Lived September 29 October 3, 2018 Sponsored by the Churches of St. Francis of Assisi, St. Mary of the Assumption, and Church of St. Paul Lead by Speaker: Vince Ambrosetti Embracing and living the call of Baptism. BAPTISM CALLS EACH AND ALL OF US to a conscious and active role in the Mystical Body of Christ. Faith is not a spectator event, parish is not meant for passive membership. Belonging to Christ carries gifts beyond measure, and real responsibilities that impact the lives of all those who surround us, especially our children, and even our children's children. Special Thank You We would like to express our gratitude to Kirk Simonis and friends who spent two days trimming trees and helping us out with landscaping on our church grounds. We appreciate your helping hands! For Potential Godparents and Sponsors for Baptisms or Confirmation Anyone looking to be a Godparent or Sponsor to a Confirmation Candidate MUST be a registered member of St. Francis of Assisi to be able to get a letter of certification. This is the only way that the Church can verify you are a practicing Catholic. Cannon law requires you are to be a practicing Catholic to be a sponsor. Please call Delores at the parish center (722-4388) with any questions.

School Update As most of you are aware the Hillside Children s Home has been renting our school building since June of last year. Our lease arrangement with Hillside will be continuing until May 31, 2019. However, our plans to continue with Hillside after May 2019 and perhaps sell the building to them after the lease expires have been put on hold. The State Department of Education has not granted Hillside permission to operate a school in our building. There is some sunshine in this message in that we will be working with the Chenango Valley Schools to lease the building during the 2019-2020 school year. We have had some preliminary discussions with Dave Gill (superintendent and one of your fellow parishioners) about using the school during the renovations to Port Dickinson Elementary and Chenango Bridge Elementary schools during the 2019-2020 school year. We are happy about this opportunity to support CV and will continue to work with Hillside until the Spring.
