January 13, 2019 The Baptism of the Lord The Baptism of the Lord I really only love God as much as I love the person I love the least. - Dorothy Day Matthew 6:33 Dear Parish Family, It seems hard to believe, but already we have completed nearly two weeks of the new calendar year, 2019. So how are you doing? Have you recovered from the frenetic pace of the holidays all of the visiting, decorating, shopping, baking, and of course, praying? Are you reminiscing over the activities of the past few weeks of festivity? How are you doing on your New Year s Resolutions? Have you given any thought to what this new year will bring? While most, if not all of the secular world has taken down its decorations, we still enjoy ours as we celebrate just one more major feast the last of this holy Christmas season: the Baptism of the Lord. Jesus is all grown up. After celebrating his birth, his being a member of a particular human family, his mother, and his being revealed as the Savior of all peoples, we now celebrate the beginning of his public ministry, whereby John presents Jesus as God s beloved Son through his baptism in the Jordan River. A wonderful lesson on this feast is that, just as Jesus is beloved, so are we beloved as God s children through our own Baptism in Christ. Do you remember your Baptism? Most likely, probably not, if you were baptized as an infant! But, it truly was an extraordinary day in your life the day you became a new creation in Jesus Christ; when you were plunged into the death and resurrection of Christ through the waters of new life; where each of us became related to each other by becoming members of the Body of Christ; when we were signed with the Chrism of salvation that most sacred and holy oil that unites us to Christ, who himself was anointed priest, prophet, and king. With our being baptized, we enter into the renewal of our true human identity, children of God and brothers and sisters of Jesus Christ. As our Christmas season ends, and we begin a new season of Ordinary Time, let us remember our Baptism and look forward to the task ahead of us. With Jesus, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, let us claim our true identity and share in the mission of Jesus himself. And, may you be renewed in God s love for you through the grace of your Baptism, always, and in all ways. Father Ed
Austin, Texas -1389 Shirley@svdpparish.org Gratefully Giving: We are a Stewardship Parish John answered them all, I baptize you with water; but he who is mightier than I is coming...he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit (Luke 3:16) The Catholic Catechism states that Jesus immersion in the water is a sign for all human beings of the need to die to themselves to do God s will. In other words, as baptized Catholics there is only one gift that we need to give Jesus ~ the gift of ourselves. Surrender yourself to God, place your trust in Him and allow the Holy Spirit to work through you for the greater glory of God. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul s U.S. Mission Statement reads: The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a network of friends, growing in holiness and building a more just world through personal relationships with and service to people in need. Vincentians are called by God to grow in holiness through a ministry of service to the poor. Are you being called? Business meetings are the 2 nd Wednesday of each month at 7pm in Portable 2. Spirituality meetings begin with 6:30 pm Mass in the Daily Chapel every 3 rd Tuesday of the month followed by a Reflection in the Alicia Chapel. Former President Ronald Reagan designated January 22, 1984, as the first National Sanctity of Human Life Day. The significance behind that date is that it fell on the 11th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court case which legalized abortion in our country beginning in 1973. In the past 45 years, over 60 million children have died. Please pray for an end to abortion.
