Friends of Yiddish Sunday, October 14th 10:30 am At the Mandell JCC, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford We ll be viewing Shtetl by the Sea, a short Yiddish film (with English subtitles) about the heyday of the Jewish community of Miami Beach. It s an informal, mostly English, bi-lingual drop-in social group which meets to hear a guest speaker or discussion & maybe absorb a Yiddish word or two. Plus, a nosh. Tangling With Talmud Wednesdays, 10:30 am at the Mandell JCC The Talmud is a rich and lively conversation among many generations. Passionate arguments about law and justice are intertwined with wild stories and musings about the meaning of life. Come participate and add your own voice. No experience needed! Ivrim-The Ones Who Cross Over: Strangers and Refugees Then and Now Saturday, October 20th B nai Tikvoh-Sholom at 9:30 am Lunch & Learn at 11:30 am On this Shabbat when we read about Abram and Sarai's journey to a strange land, we'll join Jewish communities across the country to study Torah, learn more about the current global refugee crisis, and discuss ways we might help address it. This program is part of National Refugee Shabbat, sponsored by HIAS - "Welcome the Stranger; Protect the Refugee." And join us again on Sunday morning, October 21st at 10:30 am at the Mandell JCC for a powerful art workshop on the theme of refugees, borders and barriers. Free and open to the public. Please RSVP to the BTS office by Tuesday, October 16th, to ensure that everyone has enough lunch with their learning. MUSSAR YOGA Mussar Yoga with Terry Wolfisch Cole links the Jewish spiritual practice of self-study and the cultivation and discipline of ethical behavior known as Mussar with Yoga, the ancient Indian path for creating union between mind, body and spirit. In this class you will learn how to explore the physical dimension of soul traits ethical behaviors and attitudes such as humility, generosity, enthusiasm and gratitude through yoga poses and the yogic practice of breath work. Each class will be themed on one of the Mussar soul traits. Classes will be Gentle Yoga, accessible to anyone who can get down to the floor and back up again. Partners in Creation: "Remember that you were refugees": Turning Words of Torah into Works of Art Sunday, October 21st at 10:30 a.m. at the Mandell JCC, 335 Bloomfield Avenue, West Hartford With Rabbi Debra Cantor & Melinda Wright $10; $8 for BTS or JCC members Free for Neshama Patrons We will be creating "calligrams," merging language with imagery to create a work of art made from words and a picture. As a follow-up to National Refugee Shabbat, we will focus on today's global refugee crisis, especially on our own borders and in our own communities. We will use Jewish teachings, poetry, quotes from refugees and your own thoughts as sources and employ pen and ink, watercolors, and markers on paper to create a visual statement. No artistic experience needed! Materials and instruction will be provided for all levels. They said WHAT? : Creating Poetic Midrash Sunday, November 4th, from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon at B nai Tikvoh-Sholom, 180 Still Road, Bloomfield $15; $12 for JCC/BTS members Free for Neshama patrons with Sara DeBeer We will work in a group as well as individually to create poetic monologues which imagine what different individuals in the Bible might have been thinking at key moments in their narratives. No prior knowledge in writing (or Torah) necessary! Sara is a professional storyteller who presents programs of multicultural folktales to audiences of all ages. Her poetry has been published in a number of books and journals. She s also an experienced classroom teacher who uses the arts to help students gain insight.
