Yeshiva of Greater Washington Tiferes Gedaliah Passion for Learning PREPARATION FOR LIFE

MEET OUR MENAHEL & GS PRINCIPAL RABBI ZEV KATZ MENAHEL GIRLS DIVISION Rabbi Zev Katz has been leading YGW s Girls Division for 35 years. His work is guided by the legacy of his uncle, Rabbi Gedaliah Anemer z tl, as well as by his own commitment and compassion. Rabbi Katz is a master educator, with a gift for understanding each student and knowing the right thing to say at just the right time. His goal is to nurture the potential for greatness in every student, and he does so with patience, trusting that the lessons and ideas imparted between seventh and twelfth grade will bear fruit when it matters later in life. Rabbi Katz s involvement in his students chinuch does not end at graduation; some of his most important work is done quietly - in phone conversations, meetings, and correspondence - years, and even decades, after graduates leave Linden Lane for a YGW graduate remains his talmida, his responsibility, and his concern. MRS. YAEL CORTELL PRINCIPAL GENERAL STUDIES Mrs. Yael Cortell joined the YGW staff five years ago as the Principal of General Studies. She came to us from the Berman Hebrew Academy where she taught Chumash and English, formally mentored new teachers, and co-chaired the English Department. Mrs. Cortell has been teaching for 18 years in a variety of schools and adult education programs, including Bais Yaakov of Baltimore, Maalot Seminary, Women s Institute of Torah, and Mesorah Women s Learning Institute. Mrs. Cortell has a master s degree in Secondary English Education from Johns Hopkins University and certification in teacher mentorship and administrative leadership. In addition to her administrative role, Mrs. Cortell teaches ninth grade English and twelfth grade Parsha.

ROOTED IN TRADITION NUTURING OUR FUTURE KEDUSHAS HACHAIM One of our primary goals is to nurture our students growth in avodas Hashem and commitment to living as bnos yisrael, following the path set by Frau Sara Schneirer. Shacharis sets the tone for our day, and Limudei kodesh classes, scheduled throughout the day, engage the mind and the heart. Our students are taught a Toras Chaim by passionate teachers who live what they teach and teach what they live. The Yeshiva faculty has served as positive role models in their love and dedication to teaching Torah which has deepened our children s connection with the mesorah and commitment to a life of Torah and mitzvos. Michael and Barbara Levine, parents of Ariella, Rebecca, Rachie, and Miriam My teachers work hard to pass down the mesorah of Torah to their students. They aim to show all of us that we are the daughters of Hashem and that we have purpose and meaning in this world, to serve Hashem and keep His Torah. Rachel Feldman, class of 2019 OUR ACADEMIC PROGRAM We aim to meet every student where she is, and encourage her to own her learning and to take intellectual risks, to explore, to set and meet higher expectations for herself. Our teachers invite active questioning and discussion, and promote a growth mindset in the classroom so that students develop the confidence to embrace academic challenges and grow from them. My students are curious and their inquiry drives our study of Chumash. It is exhilarating to teach students who are so engaged in learning. Mrs. Reingold, Limudei Kodesh Department Chair and teacher Our lessons encourage thinking. Our teachers push us to grow and achieve in our studies, teaching us material and equipping us with the skills we need to continue learning for the rest of our lives. Shira Komarow, class of 2019

OUR FACULTY Our faculty has an average of 25 years of teaching experience, and they have taught in middle and high schools, seminaries, and universities. They are a very special group of professionals: knowledgeable in content and pedagogy, reflective about their craft, and deeply invested in their students success. They are also warm and accessible, and the relationships that they develop with their students often extend beyond high school. From the very first day I began working at YGW, I was struck by how the teachers and administrators sincerely care about each individual student holistically and academically. The desire to maximize the growth and success of every single girl permeates the culture and enhances the learning environment. Dr. Avigayil Druck Shudofsky, former Science teacher My teachers go out of their way to help anyone who is struggling. I ve come to feel very comfortable in my own skin. Goldie Walls, class of 2019 EXTRACURRICULAR PROGRAMMING YGW s extracurricular programming extends the classroom chinuch and offers opportunities for students to forge friendships, cultivate leadership, and develop their creative talents. Many of these programs are led by students: Student Council builds school spirit through trips, yom tov mesibos, and an end-of-year shabbaton; LIFT presidents develop programming that imbue our halls with simchas hamitzvah and kedushas hazman; and Chessed and Tzedakah committees work to raise awareness and commitment to tzarchei tzibur. I enjoy working with the students who are in Student Council. The students are so creative, and it s gratifying to watch them mature through their leadership. They learn to be flexible, to hold themselves accountable, and to work together as a team. Mrs. Arona Hes, Math teacher and Student Council advisor The chessed opportunities I ve been offered at Yeshiva have made a lasting impact on me. They inspired me to spend my summer volunteering in Israel, an experience that changed my life. Nessia Ferneau, class of 2018

ELECTIVE CLASSES Elective classes meet twice a week and run on a trimester system so students can participate in different classes over the course of the year. During the fall and spring, we offer courses in the arts, STEM, and fitness. The winter trimester focuses on performance arts, and our students work together to create an original musical performance. The production elective is a wonderful opportunity for students in every grade to work together and create something larger than themselves. The lessons of unity, responsibility, sensitivity, and leadership are life lessons that remain with our students long after they graduate. Sara Malka Winter, Faculty Advisor Production has been a great learning experience for us. It s provided us with the opportunity to come together and learn and grow from each other to create something special. We are really glad to be a part of it. Rachel Herman and Rachel Rutstein, class of 2018 A CULTURE OF WARMTH We take pride in the way our students treat and support each other with sensitivity, inclusiveness, and kindness. This is evident every day in the reverent silence of our davening room, in the warm laughter that fills the halls during breaks, and in the strong friendships that develop during the six years of middle and high school. My daughter has learned that Jewish young women come in different packages. But all of them have a spark of spirituality and a potential to be great. How did she learn that? Because she watched a staff of respected mechanchim and mechanchos who show tremendous love and appreciation for each and every student. That respect becomes a standard that all the girls learn to live up to. Mrs. Yehudis Komarow, mother of Shira Yeshiva has a unique ruach. It s hard to walk down the halls and not get caught up in the ever present spirit and excitement. Chana Robinson, class of 2019

Ms. Adina Wakschlag, Class of 2012 We were lucky to have amazing Rabbeim and teachers and really create a bond with them and also feel free to challenge and question and even argue if we wanted to. We were really given the love of Judaism and left with a thirst for learning more. My children know that I wish I could replicate for them what I had, but I ve come to realize that what the Yeshiva offers is very rare and special.
