CHRIST THE KING / LAST WEEKEND IN THE CHURCH YEAR Sat., Nov. 24, 2018 6:30 p.m.; Sun., Nov. 25, 2018 8:00 & 10:45 a.m. Based on the Service of Prayer & Preaching LSB pg. 260 As We Gather Today is the Last Sunday of the Church Year, which remembers that while many in this world are beginning preparations to celebrate Christ s first coming at Christmas, we are now preparing for His second coming at the end of time. Christ s return as our glorious king will bring with it not fear or sadness to the believer, but it will bring joyous celebration even greater than the triumphs of Easter morning. Christ our King reigns now, but we wait for his kingdom to come finally and fully into our lives for all eternity. Amen. Come, Lord Jesus! The Word of the Lord Old Testament (Please be seated) Not by Sword or Spear 1 Samuel 17:38-40, 42, 45, 48-50 38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, 39 and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them. So David put them off. 40 Then [David] took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine 42 And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance 45 Then David said to the Philistine, You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied 48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground. 50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Hymn Verse Come, Thou Almighty King LSB 905 1 Come, Thou almighty King, Help us Thy name to sing; Help us to praise; Father all-glorious, O er all victorious, Come and reign over us, Ancient of Days. Epistle To Him Be Glory and Dominion Forever Revelations 1:4b-8 4 Grace to you and peace from him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven spirits who are before his throne, 5 and from Jesus Christ the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of kings on earth. To him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood 6 and made us a kingdom, priests to his God and Father, to him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen. 7 Behold, he is coming with the clouds, and every eye will see him, even those who pierced him, and all tribes of the earth will wail on account of him. Even so. Amen. 8 I am the Alpha and the Omega, says the Lord God, who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty. L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. Holy Gospel My Kingdom Is Not of This World John 18:33-37 33 So Pilate entered his headquarters again and called Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews? 34 Jesus answered, Do you say this of your own accord, or did others say it to you about me? 35 Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered you over to me. What have you done? 36 Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world. 37 Then Pilate said to him, So you are a king? Jesus answered, You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice. Catechism P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. 2 nd Petition with Explanation P: Each week as we gather together as the people of God, we join together in the Lord s Prayer asking for God s kingdom to come. In the midst of a world that so often pushes aside the things of God, what does this mean to pray, Thy kingdom come? C: The kingdom of God certainly comes by itself without our prayer, but we pray in this petition that it may come to us also. God's kingdom comes when our heavenly Father gives us His Holy Spirit, so that by His grace we believe His holy Word and lead godly lives here in time and there in eternity. Children s Message (Please be seated) Hymn of the Day I Know That My Redeemer Lives LSB 461 5 He lives to silence all my fears; He lives to wipe away my tears; He lives to calm my troubled heart; He lives all blessings to impart. 7 He lives and grants me daily breath; He lives, and I shall conquer death; He lives my mansion to prepare; He lives to bring me safely there. 3

Sermon The Joy of the Lord is Your Strength 1 Samuel 17:38-50; John 18:33-37 1) Nothing but. 45 David said to the Philistine, You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty 50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him (1 Samuel 17:45, 50). 2) Nothing but. 37 Jesus answered [Pilate], You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify to the truth.... 14b Here is your king, Pilate said to the Jews. 15 But they shouted, Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him! 19 Pilate had a notice prepared and fastened to the cross. It read: Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. (John 18:37; 19:14b-15, 19) 3) Nothing but. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing (2 Timothy 4:8). Listen to past sermons or share them with a friend at clcs.org/sermons. 4

Hymn of Response (Please stand) I Know That My Redeemer Lives LSB 461 8 He lives, all glory to His name! He lives, my Jesus, still the same; Oh, the sweet joy this sentence gives: I know that my Redeemer lives! Apostles' Creed (6:30 p.m. / 8:00 a.m. only) I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Confession of Sins and the Announcement of God s Forgiveness P: Christ is coming again. Although we know this, have heard it, and believed it, we have not always acted according to it. At times we have grown complacent, focused on the things of this world rather than on Christ and His kingdom. Let us then turn to him in confession. C: Heavenly Father, we often fall short of living in light of Your promises. We have fallen asleep in the comfort of our sins. We have not stayed awake and remained prepared for the return of Your Son. Forgive us, renew us, and stir us up so that we might prepare ourselves and others for Christ s return. P: Because of Jesus Christ s death and resurrection, you are presented blameless before the presence of God. As a called and ordained servant of the risen Christ and by His authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ. C: Amen. To God be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, now and forever. Amen. Pastoral Greeting & Rite of Fellowship (Please be seated) (Welcome! Please add your name to the fellowship pad.) Gathering of Offerings (As an act of worship and thanksgiving, we offer to God what He has first given to us: the first and best of our lives, time, talents and financial gifts. We trust Him to supply all our needs. If you would like to give your offering electronically, you can use www.clcs.org/donate or the QR code here.) Lord's Prayer P: Lord remember us in Your kingdom and teach us to pray: C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. The 8:00 a.m. service continues on page 11. Holy Communion Jesus Christ is the Bread of Life. He says: Come, for those who eat this bread and drink this cup will never hunger or thirst, but be raised up on the Last Day (John 6). Whoever receives the Lord s Supper must be a believer in Christ (Hebrews 11:6); be sorry for their sins (Proverbs 28:13); believe that Christ offers His body and blood with the bread and wine (1 Corinthians 10:16); and be willing to forgive those who have sinned against you (Matthew 6:14-15). Come with faith in His promises to you and His presence in this holy meal. As you approach the Lord s table, please move to the cross on the center rail. Gluten-free wafers are available on the two stands at the front of the church. Worshippers with a gluten allergy may pick up a sealed packet on their way to the communion rail. 6
