CATECHETICAL MINISTRY AND UPCOMING PARISH EVENTS Catholic Tech Corner... Here are three apps and a few ideas on how to use them to strengthen your Lenten journey. Laudate. This is a given. Known as the No. 1 Catholic app, it offers a wide variety of resources, from the daily readings to Vatican documents. Great resources for Lent include the Stations of the Cross, the Rosary, Liturgy of the Hours (although it has a different translation, and the days mix up on iphones at times) and a daily examination of conscience. Truth & Life. This app is a dramatized audio rendition of the New Testament. For Lent, you can download the free version and study the book of Mark (the full version is $19.99). It still has study questions and other resources. Rosary of the Hours. You can try a new way of praying the Rosary this Lent. It s designed for using one decade for each hour of the day (from the Joyful, Luminous, Sorrowful and Glorious mysteries), but you can simply use the Sorrowful. The app has Psalms, mediations and Scripture passages for each mystery. You could then transition to the full Rosary after Easter. It s a great way to start a new spiritual habit. To be continued... Reflections from the Pastoral Associate: This week we begin the season of Lent with Ash Wednesday. It is a time when many of us decide to make some personal sacrifices. We do it for many reasons: to deepen our awareness of our spiritual life and our inner hunger for God; to give up something we like and give the money we save to the poor (especially to put in our CRS Rice Bowls); to express sorrow for our sins, etc. These and many others are admirable intentions. Approximately 500 years ago, Saint Ignatius of Loyola developed a daily way of praying that invited people to examine their lives so that they could better serve God. This prayer, The Daily Examen, is part of the Spiritual Exercises, a guide that includes retreats, meditations, prayers, and comtemplative practices developed by Saint Ignatius. During this season of Lent, in our nightly prayers, we might consider the following: 1. Ask God for light. I want to look at my day with God s eyes, not merely my own. 2. Give thanks. The day I have just lived is a gift from God. Be grateful for it. 3. Review the day. I carefully look back on the day just completed, being guided by the Holy Spirit. 4. Face your shortcomings. I face up to what is wrong in my life and in me. 5. Look toward the day to come. I ask where I need God in the day to come. And at the end of the day, ask yourself.how did I do today? Also, we would love to see many of you at the Lenten Devotionals that will be happening on the Fridays during Lent. These spiritual times bring us together as family.as a Catholic community of faith. Lenten blessings, Joann Maier ADA 2017 Proclaiming God s Love, Together in Christ As we enter the third week of the 2017 Annual Diocesan Appeal, we would like to formally thank all those who have pledged their support for the ministries and services of the parish and Diocese. To date, 97 families have made pledges and gifts of over $39,310. We are doing great, however, we need everyone s participation in order to be successful. Please make your pledge today. Pledge envelopes and brochures can be found in the vestibule area of the church. Attention: Online Giving Donors Those of you utilizing Parish Soft Online Giving and using a credit card to make your donations, please remember to update your account whenever you are issued a new credit card by your bank/credit company for what ever reason. You will need to log on to your Parish Soft Online Giving Profile and update your account information. You can access the Online Giving Site by using the link on our Parish Website: www.churchstanthony.com If you have any other questions, please contact Tracey Nicol in the Parish Office at: churchstanthony@aol.com or (408) 997-4800. Thank you for your support! Without our generous advertisers, Saint Anthony Parish would not have a weekly bulletin. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. SAINT ANTHONY PARISH CATHOLIC SOCIAL TEACHING COMMITTEE Quotes for Reflection As Lent is the time for greater love, listen to Jesus thirst... Repent and believe Jesus tells us. What are we to repent? Our indifference, our hardness of heart. What are we to believe? Jesus thirsts even now, in your heart and in the poor He knows your weakness. He wants only your love, wants only the chance to love you. Blessed Teresa of Calcutta You Did It for Me Mike* is a former gang member who, after serving time in prison, entered a Catholic Charities reentry program. There he received the guidance and support he needed to reject violence and crime. Now he is a Peer Mentor in the same program, and he is studying for his social work degree at a local university. Mike credits Catholic Charities for helping him make a change in his life: I did then what I knew how to do. Now that I know better, I do better. In 2015, Catholic Charities agencies provided 14,466 prisoners and returning citizens services to help reform their lives. www.catholiccharitiesusa.org Saint Anthony Parish Update Saint Anthony has a Parish Update that we send out via email. Have you received it? Have you opened it and read it? We send it out twice a month. Our Parish Update is an extension of our weekly Mass bulletin and highlights important dates/ activities/events etc., which are coming up within the Parish and/or Diocese. If you have an email address and are not receiving our Parish Update, please contact Tracey Nicol in the Parish Office at 408-997-4800 and let her know. It s possible we have an old email address or o email address for you on file. We d love to keep you updated!
