He is the one of whom I said, 'A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me.' I did not know him, but the reason why I came baptizing with water was that he might be made known to Israel." John testified further, saying, "I saw the Spirit come down like a dove from heaven and remain upon him. I did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water told me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit come down and remain, he is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.' Now I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God." Learning, Living and Sharing the Good News

Mass and Anointing For Nursing Home Residents Oakview-January 10th Brookdale-February 21st Lifecare-February 21st All are at 10:00 a.m. My Dear Parishioners, The New Year bodes of hope and expectation. We see in today s Gospel that the Magi were indeed pagan foreigners, yet they felt so compelled to seek the Christ Child they were willing to travel a great distance (surely involving a lot of hardship) to pay him homage. And when they were warned in a dream of Herod s plan, they took an even longer way home to ensure the safety of Jesus and his whereabouts. And they weren t even Christian! What are the routes we choose to take that lead us to Christ? Are we willing to take the road less travelled or less expected of us, seeking not our own glorification, power, or income but to do the right thing by choosing Jesus? Are we willing to choose to serve as a liturgical minister, bring Communion to the sick and homebound, serve in the Cold Night Shelter or the Food Pantry are we willing to make a change in our day to day schedule to accommodate what Jesus calls us to do serve the poor, the needy, the lonely. As the Magi brought gifts to the Christ Child, we all have gifts to bring. Let them be a genuine gift of ourselves, freely given in the name of Jesus, for the betterment of our world and the building of his kingdom. I d like to take this opportunity to thank all of you for your generosity for our Giving Tree many, many families benefitted and were so grateful. On behalf of Fr. George and myself, we are also grateful for the many Christmas prayers, gifts and good wishes. Speaking on behalf of Fr. George, Deacon Mel and our entire staff, we are looking forward to serving you in the coming year. God bless you, Father Mike Pastor s Letter

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (adapted for youth) DO YOU KNOW SOMEONE who may be hearing the whisper of God s call to Catholicism? The RCIA is a beautiful process and a journey worth taking! Don t get caught up in the terminology, but share this explanation of the process with anyone who may be interested have them reach out to us with the Holy Spirit s guidance, we will do the rest! RCI(A) and adapted for Youth: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults is for unbaptized adults, adults baptized another Christian faith (or those baptized Catholic, with no subsequent catechesis or sacraments) - AND adapted for youth older than 7 who are not baptized and/or older Catholic children who are baptized, but have not been catechized (instructed) or received First Eucharist. Catechumens (those not yet baptized) are sent forth from the Mass following Gospel / Homily for a celebration of weekend readings, breaking open the Word of God. Sponsors / Parents / Spouses remain in full Mass participation. Separate weekly catechetical (instructional) sessions are offered (age appropriate classroom break outs). Sponsor / Parent / Family participation is vital to this process - and will be highly encouraged (along with family mentors from within the parish community). Contact the parish office for more information. January 8, 2017 www.stanpr.org bulletin@stanpr.org Faith Formation For All! The Epiphany of the Lord Lord, every nation on earth will adore you. From Psalm 72 Christmas is a SEASON and we are still in the season! The tradition of giving gifts at Christmas is thought by some to actually be rooted in the gift giving of the Magi. In some cultures, gifts are not exchanged on Christmas day, but rather the Feast of The Epiphany (Three Kings Day). Whenever you exchange your Christmas gifts, take some time to reflect on this tradition of gift giving at Christmas. Think of the best gift you have received. What was it? What made it special? Was it the gift itself, the thought that went into it - or the person who gave it to you? Read today's Gospel, (Matthew 2:1-12). The gifts of the Magi - gold, frankincense, and myrrh - have come to be understood as symbols of Christ's royalty, divinity, and eventual suffering and death. They are special because in giving them, the Magi acknowledge who Jesus was to be: our Savior. Let s pray that we will better accept Jesus as our friend and savior in all that we do and say. Another way to find deeper meaning in this special day - think about those gifts a little differently - think of them as everything that keeps you from being close to Him (burdens, worries, anger, fear, etc. ) Jesus wants us to lay them down at His feet - let go of it all. He will gladly take it from us, and help us make more room for Him! Tomorrow, we officially conclude the Christmas season as we celebrate the feast of the Baptism of The Lord. A little Catholic FYI: In most years, this feast is celebrated on the Sunday after Epiphany. When Epiphany falls on either January 7 or 8, the Baptism of the Lord is celebrated on the Monday after Epiphany. Although some of us may have already taken down our Christmas decorations liturgically speaking - the Christmas season hasn't ended yet. Tomorrow is the last day! The baptism of Jesus is considered the most important manifestation (a sign of something important happening) of God in the person of Jesus. It s really another epiphany (manifestation or showing forth). The event is reported in each of the three Synoptic Gospels - Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Without a doubt, Jesus' baptism was an event of great significance for Jesus and for the early Christian community and should be for us as well! ANSWER IN YOUR HEART: How I am living out my baptismal promise to be priest (mediator or bridge between others & God, through kindness and service), prophet (person who always speaks goodness & compassion to others for God s greater glory), and king (one who lets God always reign in their heart, working bravely for peace and justice in the world)? The Epiphany of the Lord WEEKLY SESSIONS resume on campus as follows: Sunday morning sessions AND Life Teen resumes THIS Sunday 1/8 RCIA resumes Monday 1/9 Wednesday sessions resume Wednesday 1/11 Next Infant Baptism Prep Session Sunday 1/15 following 10:30AM Mass (contact Sue to register) PRAYER SERVICE FOR UNITY WEDNESDAY JANUARY 18th 6:30PM Main Church Gather your Goods & SAVE THE DATE!
