Apparently, I was the one for the job. I worked for six hours. Mrs. Link showed me how to plant bulbs, what flowers and weeds to pull out and where to haul the dried plants. I finished off the day by mowing the lawn with a mower that looked like an antique, but worked like brand new. When I had finished, Mrs. Link gave me a cheque for three dollars. The next week I cleaned Mrs. Link s house. She showed me exactly how to vacuum her antique Persian rug with her antique looking vacuum cleaner. Some weeks I got to be a chauffeur. The last gift to Mrs. Link from Mr. Link was a glorious new car. Mrs. Link s car was 30 years old but still glorious. An year and a half passed since I met Mrs. Link. School work and Church were taking up more of my time, I saw Mrs. Link seldom. On Valentine s Day, I self-consciously presented Mrs. Link a small bouquet, which she graciously accepted. A couple of months later, I visited Mrs. Link again. Centred on her mantelpiece, in her living room full of beautiful things, stood my wilted and faded Valentine s Day bouquet-the only Valentine Mrs. Link had received that year. I. Q.2 Read the passage carefully and answer the questions that follows: The Kurukshetra war was interminable, with men and beasts being killed on both sides. The Pandavas realized that they could not win the war unless Drona, their teacher in the art of war, was defeated. But no one could defeat him fairly. Only one thing would dishearten and disarm Drona, the news that his son Aswathama had been killed. And so, as planned earlier, on the fifteenth day of the war, Bhima killed a huge elephant called Aswathama and roared, I have killed Aswathama. Drona heard this roar and thought that his son has been killed. To make double sure that what he had heard was true, he asked Dharmaputra on the Pandava side, Is it true that my son has been killed? Drona knew that Dharamputra, the incarnation of Dharma (righteousness), would not tell a lie. But the war had to be won. So, Dharamputra shouted at the top of his voice, Yes, Aswathama has been slain. He added in a low voice that could not be heard above the din of the battle, Aswathama, the elephant. Drona believed that his son had been killed and so lost all interest in the battle and sat down in his chariot in a yoga posture. Immediately, the eldest brother of Panchali killed Drona. Dharamputra made himself and others believe that he did not tell a lie. For he thought that he had also said, though in a low voice, that Aswathama, the elephant, was killed. But any statement you make with the intention of cheating other is a lie; nothing less. The very moment Dharamputra uttered that one lie, his chariot whose wheels always stood and moved some four inches above the ground came down and touched the ground. He was punished for telling a lie. Complete the following sentences: a) The Pandavas realised that they could not win the war unless. b) Aswathama whom Bhima killed was actually. c) The eldest Pandava was called Dharmaputra because. d) Dharmaputra s chariot came down and touched the ground as a punishment for. e) The word in the passage which means the same as killed is.
