WEEKDAY READINGS SCRIPTURE INSIGHTS MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2017 ST. JOHN DAMASCENE, PRIEST ISAIAH 2:1-5 MATTHEW 8:5-11 The readings on this First Sunday of Advent express well the meaning of the season. The Latin word adventus means a coming or an arrival. Theologians use its Greek equivalent, parousia, refer the Second Coming of Christ. This season of the liturgical year is not only about getting ready celebrate Jesus birth, but also about anticipating the arrival of God s Kingdom in fullness at the end time. The First Reading, from Isaiah, is part of a long lament that began at Isaiah 63 and extends the middle of Isaiah 66. As the Judeans returned Jerusalem from exile in Babylon, they found their Temple destroyed and felt that God had abandoned them. Here the prophet prays that God will come them in a more wondrous way than he did in Sinai. Despite his sadness over the past and the recognition that God has a right punish the people for their failure keep covenant, the prophet ends on a note of hope for the future: We are all the work of your hands! (Isaiah 64:7) Today s Gospel comes from a passage sometimes called Mark s Little Apocalypse, a teaching about preparing for the Second Coming of Christ. These lines were written shortly before the Second Temple in Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70 and before a time of persecution began. The parable that Jesus uses demonstrate our need be watchful is compelling! It suggests that we are not in charge of the comings and goings of the Lord of the house. Instead, we are the gatekeepers, waiting welcome the coming Kingdom of God. Will you be ready? TUESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 2017 ISAIAH 11:1-10 LUKE 10:21-24 WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2017 ST. NICHOLAS, BISHOP ISAIAH 25:6-10A MATTHEW 15:29-37 THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7, 2017 ST. AMBROSE, BISHOP AND DOCTOR OF THE CHURCH ISAIAH 26:1-6 MATTHEW 7:21, 24-27 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 8, 2017 SOLEMNITY OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY GENESIS 3:9-15, 20 EPHESIANS 1:3-6, 11-12 LUKE 1:26-38 SATURDAY, DECEMBER 9, 2017 ST. JUAN DIEGO CUAUHTLATOATZIN ISAIAH 30:19-21, 23-26 MATTHEW 9:35 10:1, 5A, 6-8 Do a careful reading of day s Gospel. What question is Jesus addressing with the parable of the gate keeper? What does the image mean for you? Select a phase from day s Responsorial Psalm and reflect on how it speaks you about the compassion and generosity that accompanies God s coming. When have you felt yourself being shaped like clay in God s hands? Did you or do you now experience it as a time of hope for the future? Aunque no hay un Código de Vestimen escri sobre cómo deben vestirse los fieles cuando asisten a la Misa, el sentido común dicta vestimen adecuado y modes y un ambiente de silencio y devoción cuando en la Presencia Real del Señor. La Misa no es una reunión social. Aquellos que reconocen la Presencia Real del Señor en la Iglesia muestran respe, reverencia y orgullo.
