August 12, 2018 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time STRENGTHENED BY THE BREAD OF LIFE Today we resume the Bread of Life discourse from John s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life a marvelous promise, but this reward is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish Staff Reverend Sean G. Carpenter ~ Pastor Deacon Frank Gisoldi Deacon Tom Amoroso Melissa Laverty Pastoral Associate ~ St.MaxMelissa@outlook.com Coordinator of Religious Education Marion Colvin Office Manager ~ mcol@ptd.net John Marcinkowski, Jr. Coordinator of Music ~ jjm1105@ptd.net Tuesday, August 14th Feast Day of St. Maximilian Kolbe 9:15 am Mass This is a Mass for Intentions of All Parishioners and Thanks to All for their Generosity to our Roof Replacement Fund. Greater love than this no man hath, that a man lay down his life for his friends. - John 15:13 That verse certainly comes to mind when one thinks of St. Maximilian Kolbe, whose feast we celebrate this Tuesday. So it s not surprising to read that these were the opening words of the papal decree introducing his beatification. St. Maximilian Kolbe was arrested in Poland in February of 1941, and in May sent to the Auschwitz death camp. As prisoner #16670, he eventually laid down his life for another prisoner on August 14, 1941, at the young age of 47. Solemnity of The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Vigil Mass: Tuesday, Aug. 14th - 7 pm Holyday Mass: Wed., Aug. 15th - 9:15 am The Catholic Church teaches as dogma that the Virgin Mary "having completed the course of her earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory". This doctrine was dogmatically defined by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950, in the apostolic constitution Munificentissimus Deus by exercising papal infallibility. In Munificentissimus Deus Pope Pius XII pointed to the Book of Genesis (3:15) as scriptural support for the dogma in terms of Mary's victory over sin and death as also reflected in 1 Corinthians 15:54: "then shall come to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory".

The Committee is always looking for new ways to make this event successful. Last year, some parishioners approached us with new items they had and asked if we would like to include them in the raffle. That lit a light bulb, so to speak, and for 2018 the Craft Committee thought there may be many parishioners who would like to participate in this manner. If you have any new items that you would like to donate (value at $25.00 or more), we would appreciate your donations. If you have a business, perhaps a gift certificate or basket of your products. If you wish to donate in this manner, please fill in the information below and return the form to the office (or put into the collection basket) by August 31st. The item itself should be dropped off at the office no later than September 17 th. Thank you for your continued support of the fund-raising efforts on behalf of St. Maximilian Kolbe Parish.
