Please contact the head usher if you are in need of child care. Gathering Welcome & Announcements Ted Scott, Liturgist (All are invited to sign in the Friendship Register) Prelude The Day of Resurrection Burkhardt Call to Worship (1 John 1-2): One: Let us declare what the apostles heard and saw with their own eyes, what they looked at and touched with their own hands, concerning the word of life. All: God is light and in God, there is no darkness at all. One: If we walk in the light, as Jesus taught us to do, All: We have fellowship with each other and the truth is within us. One: Let us worship God! *Opening Hymn No. 464 Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Call to Confession (1 John 1:8) One: Scripture tells us that if we say that we do not sin, we are self-deceived, and God s truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and cleanse us from unrighteousness. Let us join together in confession. Prayer of Confession All: Forgive us, O Lord, for not walking in your light and love. We walk into shadowy places, of our own choosing and wonder why we cannot see the way to go. We look around for something or someone to trust, and forget to trust you first and to trust you the most. We sometimes walk away from you, instead of accepting your invitation to come closer. Forgive us, O Lord, for not walking in your light and love. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen. 2
Declaration of Forgiveness One: God is faithful. God is just. All: God promises to forgive our sin and cleanse us so that we are made new. One: Believe the good news of the gospel: All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God! The Peace One: May the peace of Christ be with you. All: And also with you. Congregational Response: Hymn 2157 Come and Fill Our Hearts 3
The Word Prayer for Illumination One: Guide us, O God, by your Word and Spirit, that in your light we may see light, in your truth find wisdom, and in your will discover your peace, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen Old Testament Reading: Psalm 133 New Testament Reading: 1 John 1:1-2:2 Anthem Surely the Presence of the Lord Is In This Place Wolfe Sermon Sinful or Sinfree? Reverend Susan Rosenbaum *Hymn No. 370 Just As I Am, Without One Plea *Affirmation of Faith (from A Brief Statement of Faith, Presbyterian (USA)) We trust in Jesus Christ, fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God: preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel. Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world. God raised Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal. With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen. Prayers of the People and the Lord s Prayer Congregational Response: Hymn 2016 Glorify Thy Name 4
Responding with Thanks Call for Offering One: Those who are generous are blessed, for they share their bread with the poor. Let us give generously, sharing the abundance of God s blessing. Offertory I Know That My Redeemer Liveth Handel *Doxology 592 Praise God, From Whom All Blessings Flow *Prayer of Dedication All: Lord, you have called us to be a light in this world, helping to shine the light of your love and your grace upon others. Bless these gifts as they contribute toward doing your work in this world. Amen. Sending *Closing Hymn No. 438 Blest Be the Tie That Binds (Vv. 1, 2) *Charge and Benediction Reverend Susan Rosenbaum *Congregational Response No. 438 Blest Be the Tie That Binds (Vv. 3, 4) As we leave worship, we are called to carry with us the light of Christ and share it with the world.
