Cashman, 33 Most Puissant Past Grand Master Grand Council of Royal and Select Master Masons of Pennsylvania The Valley is pleased to recognize Illustrious Kerry J. Cashman, 33, at our Spring Reunion. Illustrious Brother Cashman was raised a Master Mason in Vaux Lodge No. 406 on September 21, 1985, and served as Worshipful Master in 1993. He was Knighted a Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret, 32 Scottish Rite Mason in Reading Consistory on November 21, 1987, and served as Thrice Potent Master of Reading Lodge of Perfection, 14 in 1999-2000. On August 29, 2006, he was coroneted a Sovereign Grand Inspector General, 33, Honorary Member of the Scottish Rite Supreme Council at Chicago, Illinois. He served as Assistant Treasurer of the Valley of Reading from 2009-2015. In the York Rite of Freemasonry, Illustrious Brother Cashman has an impressive resume. He is a member and Past High Priest of Excelsior Royal Arch Chapter No. 237. He is a member and past Thrice Illustrious Master of Creigh Council No. 16, Royal and Select Master Masons; a member and Past Commander of Reading Commandery No. 9, Knights Templar of Pennsylvania; and a member of Keystone Frei Mauer Mark Lodge No. 400. Illustrious Brother Cashman is a member and is currently Puissant Sovereign of Constantine Conclave, Red Cross of Constantine. He is also a member of Lehigh Valley Joshua Association; Past Commanders and Line Officers Association Div. No. 9; William Allen York Rite College No. 176; Northeast Council Knight Masons No. 74; Penn Priory No 6, KYCH; and Council of Anointed Kings of Pennsylvania. He holds the Knight York Cross of Honor, and in April, 2017 he concluded his term of office as Most Puissant Grand Master of the Grand Council of Royal and Select Master Masons of Pennsylvania. In 1980 Illustrious Brother Cashman married the former Deborah Jean Ripple and together they have one daughter; Keryn Jean. He is a member of First United Church of Christ, Hamburg. The Commander-in-Chief Thrice Potent Master s Corner Kenneth R. Good, 32 As I prepare this message I m reminded of how time passes. It seems like such a short time ago I entered the consistory line in our Valley. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what a great pleasure it has been to serve as your Commander-in-Chief. The experience has been highly rewarding and challenging, on both a personal and fraternal level. Do you have a hero? Who is your hero is it the guys in white hats? As a small boy I grew up watching westerns on TV Saturday mornings, where all the good guys wore white hats (yes, we did have a TV way back then!!) You know who they were: Gene Autry, The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Hop-a-long Cassidy just to name a few. When we think about heroes we think about people larger than life. Consider, if you will, the small boy who offered his 5 loaves and 2 fish to feed the 5,000. Talk about a hero. That small boy saved the day with his selflessness; an important lesson for us all. I ve told you all that to say this; you don t have to be larger than life to do heroic things, or be considered a hero. You may never realize just how important or life changing a simple phone call can be to someone searching for answers, or even a short visit to someone who might be lonely. Try to remember that heroes come in all sizes and you may turn out to be some ones hero. Treat each other with kindness and respect. Many times I have been humbled by the kindness of your words that enrich my heart. I have been fortunate to have worked with some absolutely great officers in my tenure. As I mentioned from the very start, it s the memories we make together when we get involved that are the most important, and I have made so many in my travels, whether here in our Valley or wherever else my travels took me. I wish the very best to the incoming officers as they make their memories of time well spent. Some people judge their lives on what they do, others on who they are. I want my life judged for the friends I have made and how enriched I am for knowing them. I have lost some of those dear friends in my tenure as well, most recently being Ill. Clayton H. Melson, 33, Commander-in-Chief of the Valley of Philadelphia; I will miss his wit, his humor and the times we spent together over the years. Sometimes we get a glimpse of our lives to remind us of how blessed we truly are. I m reminded of a song by Bob Dylan, poet and unofficial spokesman for the 1960 s generation. The times they are a changing. The best of times come to an end, leaving us great memories. Have a great time with your family this summer; they deserve it and so do you! Winter is past and with it the doldrums of ugly weather and gray days, although we did have some nice weather! The Valley has been a pretty busy place with talent contests, a string band concert, a dance, ladies night, and a ladies tea. With springtime comes the beginning of rehearsals for the Spring Reunion, another busy time at the Valley. We need to be looking at our Blue Lodges for potential candidates for Scottish Rite. Talk about what goes on here and the fellowship we have with all the activities here, and the friendships made! Introduce them to other members of Scottish Rite at your Blue Lodge. Also, if you know a Brother who joined Scottish Rite in 2016 remind them to come to the reunion to witness other degrees and also remind them to not forget their passports when they come so they can get them stamped for the degrees they witness. With the approaching Spring Reunion I know my time as Thrice Potent Master is coming to a close. It has been my pleasure to serve in this capacity and I hope I ve done as good a job as my predecessors. What a great time it has been; a very enjoyable experience! I thank all the Past Thrice Potent Masters who have helped me along the entire way through the Lodge of Perfection. As always, the Valley can use your help in some way, whether it is at the reunions or at other times when there is activity at the Cathedral. If you are not sure you can help, ask another Brother who belongs to the Valley or ask the Commander-in-Chief who can put you in touch with the correct person. Remember Brethren, if your Brother is in need then you shall relieve him. Give of your bread to feed the hungry and of your wine to cheer the heart of the sorrowful; and remember to pour the oil of consolation into the wounds that sorrow, sickness or affliction have caused in the heart of your fellow traveler! Sovereign Prince Speaks Carey M. Kaucher, 32 Most Wise Master s Moment Jeffrey S. Moyer, 32 NO REGERTS. As the misspelled tattoo in the Milky Way commercial mistakenly says, is what comes to mind as I pen my last message as Sovereign Prince. The time spent going through the officer line was well worth it. The comradery at all the various functions, meetings, reunions, rehearsals, getting to know your Brothers and getting to know the operations of the Valley of Reading was an exceptional experience I shall not forget. My only REGERT is that I was not able to solve the age old mystery of HOW DO YOU GET THE MEMBERSHIP TO ENGAGE IN SCOTTISH RITE ACTIVITIES? I have come to the conclusion that even though we are taught that Freemasonry is not a religion; it is very much like a church. At every occasion you have the same people, in the same pew, mingling with the same people; and when a visitor comes for the first time few bother to go up to the visitor and make them feel welcome enough to come back. While it is human nature for one not to step out of their comfort zone and start conversation with a stranger, it is an important step we must learn to do if we want that new person to return. I m sure, if you go back through the messages from the officers of the Valley over the years you will find the same reoccurring message theme. That thought process being, what can we do to increase attendance at our events. Again, reminds me of church; same people, same pews, same groups. Each of us needs to step out and attend the meetings, the socials; help out at the Reunions this is how you get to know who your Brothers are in the Valley of Reading. Bring your significant other to the several coed functions held by the Valley and the many county clubs. The Ladies Auxiliary meets the same time as our Stated Meetings, giving her an opportunity to meet other women who are here with their significant other. Remember we are FAMILY. Membership is like a marriage, it is a two way street and we all have to meet in the middle to make it work. Let it never be said that there is nothing there for me. Take the time and really read the Valley Notice and you will be sure to find something. One thing we seem to forget is that many of us are Grandfathers with small children who would enjoy many of the events as well. Bring that child, who will grow up and remember the fun he had at the Valley events and want to join Freemasonry. We have to plant that seed so it will help Freemasonry grow in perpetuity. The 2017 Feast of the Paschal Lamb is now a part of history. As I sat on stage during the Feast (when not speaking) I couldn t stop admiring the excellent work of each officer. We are fortunate to have Past Most Wise Masters who I feel have set the bar very high for the Feast and your Rose Croix officers showed they want to keep our standards high. I also want to thank the choir for the beautiful music, the Knights Templars and Knights Columbus, the stage crew, and Illustrious Brothers Clarence Martin, Harry Hackman, Bob Hoyes, and Bill Oehme. If I forgot anyone I apologize. This is my last message as Most Wise Master, where did the years go? What a great time I ve had: new friends, new memories, and more fellowship. In my previous message I talked about how easily fellowship can be found in our fraternity, it also works for our ladies. My wife, Sue, retired last December and is now able to attend more Valley functions. I must say she is having a blast, making new friends, and eating out more, not that food is important in the Fraternity (?). Thank you Sue for all your support this past year and the cupcakes. I want to thank the Rose Croix officers: Gary Dukeman, John March, Keith Meitzler, Seth Anthony, Bob Trimble, and waiting to serve Bud Willard and Harry Smith. All of you are very active in the Fraternity and serve or have served in numerous leadership positions. My time as Most Wise Master was extremely easy because of you and I appreciate your dedication and love for the Fraternity. I will support all of you in any way you require. Thank you to Butch Kohler, Ken Good, Carey Kaucher, and your officers. It was fun serving with you and getting to know the officers in each line. Our Valley is in very good hands moving forward. Thank you to the county clubs and the officers for the delicious food, excellent speakers, and the fellowship. I m looking forward to the summer functions because we can dress down. Isn t the Master Mason you recommend to Scottish Rite Freemasonry entitled to the same courtesy? As his sponsor, is it not your duty to take an interest in his progress? It seems to us that it is, and that you should see to it that he fully understands the fine lessons of our degrees. If you recommend a man to the Scottish Rite, satisfy yourself that he is receiving that for which you recommended him. To do so is but a Masonic courtesy and it is also your duty as a Scottish Rite Mason. Let s all give this matter some serious consideration. It will certainly bring forth good results if you attend the conferring of the degrees at our Reunions. 4
A TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO HAVE SERVED On Tuesday, May 23, 2017 we will have the privilege of honoring those officers who have just completed their term of office. It has been said that the secret of Masonry, like the secret of life, can be known by those who seek it, serve it, live it. Like all things worth knowing, no one can know it for another and no one can know it alone. Fellowship, rapport, and communication are necessary. Members who have served as officers in the Scottish Rite have these essentials which make life happier by enlarging their circle of acquaintances and providing more opportunities for congenial fellowship and service. We can truthfully say to each of these brethren Well done thou good and faithful servant. GOLDEN EAGLES By the time you are reading this May issue of the Valley Notice the snow will be gone, Spring will be here, flowers should be starting to bloom and the temperature should be rebounding to a comfortable 73 degrees, according to weather statistics. It is time to dust off the gloom of winter and get out into the spring air. If you did not already know about the Scottish Rite, Valley of Reading s Golden Eagles Club let me inform you. The Golden Eagles meets on the 3 rd Wednesday of each month at 12 noon in the Banquet Room of the Scottish Rite Cathedral at 430 S. 7 th Avenue in West Reading; across from the Reading Hospital s new Healthplex. The organization is open to Scottish Rite Masons, Blue Lodge Masons and Non-Masons and their significant others as well. Our meeting starts out with a great full meal, catered by Dori Martin Catering of Fleetwood. NOTE: for seniors (or anyone) the best time to eat a full course meal is in the middle of the day, so you can digest the food prior to going to bed. Cost is $8.00 (no gratuity, no tax what a deal) this is followed by good programs of varying subjects of interest. Then we have a brief business meeting. Dress for the meetings is casual comfy.
