THE WLBC BULLETIN West Lynchburg Baptist Church August 12, 2018 Volume 8, Issue 32 The church with heart in the heart of the city. J u s t Around The Corner... Pearls of Wisdom A man begins cutting his wisdom teeth the first time he bites off more than he can chew, said Herb Caen. Though his tongue may have been planted firmly in his cheek, right next to said wisdom teeth, we do indeed learn from our mistakes including the mistake of thinking we can handle more than we can, or that we know more than we do, or that we don t need anyone s help (including God s). As far back as Old Testament times, people collected wisdom sayings into books from which we can still learn. Foundational to the book of Proverbs, attributed to King Solomon, is this first nugget of wisdom: The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge (1:7). May we cut the wisdom teeth of our lives not by foolishly overestimating ourselves but by following God. With harvest underway or imminent, fields of ripe grain, tall cornstalks and soybeans turning brown recall Jesus words to the disciples: The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest (Matthew 9:37-38, ESV). Nowadays farmers use fewer laborers and bigger machines than in decades past. But what about harvests of faith? Leading people to know God s love can t be done mechanically. Studies show that newspaper ads or door-hangers left anonymously are less effective at bringing people to church than a warm personal invite. Right after urging his disciples to pray for harvest workers in a classic instance of You might be God s answer to your own prayer! Jesus sends them out as those very laborers! How will they work the harvest? Not by guilting people into faith. Not by pronouncing judgment or biblical law. But by using Jesus authority to counter evil, illness and brokenness among those they befriend. Serving, Laughing, Playing & Praying Because WLBC Members Live Life With Hope Deacon of the Week: Miles Davis Miles s Deacon Families Kenneth Childress Art & Patty Portnoy Olivia Downey James Ratcliff Josh Gilbert Mark, Aleta & Michael Robertson Fidencio, Anna & Ava Medina Milton Sowell Tim & Catherine Parker Book of the Week recommendation: Two Testaments a Novel by Elizabeth Musser, 2nd book in Secrets of the Cross Trilogy ( Historical Fiction, Christian Fiction ) The slightest spark will ignite an explosion. And the tinderbox of broken political and racial relations in 1960s France and Algeria provides plenty of kindling. In the midst of the chaos, Gabriella Madison guards the orphans in her care while battling jealousy with Anne-Marie Duchemin, David s former flame who has recently arrived in Castelnau, France. Even more problems arise when the townspeople start expressing their discomfort with the multicultural orphanage. They want it shut down...permanently. Meanwhile, David is trapped on the other side of the Mediterranean, caught in the turmoil of a country gone mad. He seeks a ways to guard his life and, at the same time, protect the refugees he came to help. But even if he accomplishes his mission, can he get out of Algeria alive? 100+ Recipes have been collected but about 200 more are needed! The sooner you turn them in the better for those working on this project. Thank you! Wise Words If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn t lead anywhere. Frank A. Clark To my West Lynchburg Family, THANK YOUs We would like to say a special thank you for all your prayers and support toward our daughter Candis Grishaw. She is 100% better, but has a long way to go. This is and has been a difficult time for our whole family, but your prayers along with many others has given us great strength. God has been our guidance and source of peace for us. Thank you so much for the out pouring support and love and please continue to pray for our daughter as she heals. - Mark & Aleta Robertson Pray for the people of South Asia. 6
